2008. Someday Charlotte. Does not ring a bell? Of course it does. Someday Charlotte was one of the musical highlights of 2008. This popsong with a sixties twist was one of Jim Coles hits that entitled him to a spot in the annals of Belgian and Dutch music. The song was released in both Belgium and The Netherlands and became a big hit. But Jim Cole was not a one-day wonder, mind you! Someday Charlotte was one of the songs that pushed Cole’s debut album, Soul in 2, high in the charts. Soul in 2 was well received: it got four-star reviews in newspapers and on internetblogs (De Morgen, OOR, Stage, Digg, Cutting Edge) and gave a boost to young Cole’s career.
With Someday Charlotte Jim Cole proved to be a very talented songwriter and singer. The song was picked up nationwide, both in Belgium and The Netherlands, and remained in the charts for weeks. (Studio Brussels, Radio 1, Radio 2, MnM, Radio 1 – The Netherlands went wild)… His very versatile voice is one of Cole’s big assets: after hearing Someday Charlotte, the Belgian band Clouseau asked him for background vocals. He said yes, of course. And quit, boosted by the belief in his talent, his day job to pursue a musical career. A brave move. No guts, no glory.
2010. Two years later. High time for the next step: Jim Cole uses the slipstream of his debut to release his second album ‘When love is not enough’ (is it ever?). On this album Cole shows that he has grown both as a songwriter and a musician/singer.
The differences with Soul in 2? There are some. As we grow older, we become more mature. So does Cole. On ‘What if love is not enough’ he leaves the autobiographical path and seeks stories elsewhere. E.g. amongst his friends, all thirtysomethings who cope with issues that we all come across: break ups, bittersweet drama, chances, choices, future plans, … in short: life as we know it. Less introspection, more exploration. A coming of age album, if you want.
‘When love is not enough’ was recorded in the famous Jet Studios, Brussels. The engineer was Staf Verbeek, the producer David Poltrock.
For this album, Cole had a different recording approach: he wanted his record to sound live. You can still hear Cole’s love for old sould and Motown/Stax classics, but the sound is less polished. He did not use too many overdubs and worked with some old vintage mics. The result is a fairly rawer sound that refers to the sound of Mark Ronson’s work (Amy Winehouse, Daniel Merriweather; also Daptone).
Think soul, scratches on the heart and fierce hooks below the belt.

Tutu Puoane
In 2001, 2 time SAMA Award winner Tutu Puoane finished her vocal studies at the music college of the university of cape town (UCT), she turned down a big contract with a major South African record company and decided instead to grab with both hands a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity : she accepted a most generous offer of Dutch pianist Jack van Poll - who was living and teaching in cape town at the time - to go and study in Europe in order to develop to the fullest her unique talents as a jazz vocalist and performer. This brave decision shows already some special aspects of Puoane?s character : strength, determination and an ability to dream beyond the obvious. Today, miss Puoane has grown into a skilled and experienced singer and performer, having gained respect in Europe from musicians and audiences alike. She released two albums with her European band : ?song? (2007) and ?quiet now? (2009, which won a SAMA in 2010), both of which received critical acclaim. One of Europe?s best big bands, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, invited her to work with them, resulting in an album called ?Mama Africa? celebrating the late and great Miriam Makeba, which scooped the South African Music Award for Best Traditional Jazz Album of 2011. Amongst tutu?s fans are international music celebrities like harmonica-legend Toots Thielemans and queen of jazz voice, miss Dianne Reeves. Yet, to the South African audience she still remains a well-kept secret, only known in small jazz surroundings. The fact that she is arguably one of the best young voices and personalities South Africa has ever produced, should easily change that for the better.
Tutu Puoane was born may 31st, 1979 in Mamelodi township, Pretoria. She started playing music professionally in 1997 in down town Johannesburg. Tutu studied jazz vocals at the university of cape town with Jelena Reveshin and Virginia Davids and at the royal conservatory of The Hague (Netherlands) with Rachel Gould. She played concerts all over the world in countries like Italy, US (New York and New Orleans), Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Luxemburg and Switzerland.
Tutu has performed extensively in South Africa with many great South African musicians. In 2001, she performed at the north sea jazz festival cape town, leading an Afro-latino band, Tucan Tucan. Miiss Puoane toured new york in 2000 as the vocalist with the South African national youth big band. She received several awards from major South African jazz competitions. In 2000 she was won the ?old mutual jazz encounters? for cape region and in 2001 she received a merit award for young promising talent at the Daimler Chrysler South African jazz competition. In 2004 she was the recipient of the standard bank young artist of the year award for music.
In September of 2002, Tutu moved to Europe, spending a year and a half in The Netherlands to study and then relocating in 2004 to her current home in Antwerp, Belgium, where she?s working steadily on her career. She released her successful debut album ?song? in 2007 and the follow-up came with ?quiet now? in 2009, which won the SAMA Award for the 2010 Best Traditional Jazz Album. Miss Puoane leads her own quartet and is a guest vocalist for the great Brussels Jazz Orchestra, with which she recently released an album in honor of Miriam Makeba, called ?Mama Africa?, which also won a SAMA in May 2011 in the same category as 'quiet now'
Tutu has shared the stage with the very best South African and International jazz musicians. Beginning April 2008 she blew away a full house at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, leaving her fellow South Africans in awe of her voice, charisma and unique mix of jazz, soul and African music. On January 2nd 2010 she organized a show at Cape Town?s international convention centre called ?one night only with Tutu Puoane?. The warm response of the audience is leading her most probably to making this show into a yearly event.

Sofie & So Four : opzwepende soul en jazz
Of het nu als zangeres van het populaire Trinity was, of als solozangeres: Sofie schrijft al jarenlang mee aan de Belgische muziekgeschiedenis.
Ze veroverde de hitlijsten maar meer nog de harten van het publiek met haar optredens die synoniem zijn voor klasse en kwaliteit.
In Antwerpen geboren als kleindochter van opera-zangeres Mina Bollotine, werd ze vanaf haar jeugd ondergedompeld in een bad van muziek en cultuur.Niet verwonderlijk stond ze al op haar veertiende op het podium met haar groep "Sofia". Haar carrière kwam in een stroomversnelling nadat ze de ‘Ontdek de Ster’ tv-wedstrijd won, en samen met de op dat moment enorm populaire Belgische popband ‘The Pebbles’ de groep ‘TRINITY’ vormde, een contract met Phonogram tekende, en uiteindelijk 8 hitsingles en 2 albums uitbracht in de Benelux.
Toen Sofie in 1981 besloot een solocarrière te lanceren, mocht ze België vertegenwoordigen op het Koreaanse Songfestival, waar ze de prijs voor de beste uitvoering kreeg met haar nummer "He Loves Me". Datzelfde jaar nog tekende ze een contract met Ariola Belgium, met alweer een grote hit tot gevolg: "I Love You", één van de mooiste Belgische ballades ooit, en een groot succes in Japan, Korea en Thailand.
Met het album "When Morning Comes", geproduced door haar goede vriend en jazzpianist Jack Van Poll (o.a. Dee Dee Bridgewater, Deborah Brown,...), bevestigde Sofie haar bijzondere status als jazz-zangeres. Gitarist Philippe Catherine was als gast te horen op dit album.
Een paar jaar later, ter gelegenheid van Jack's 65ste verjaardag, werkte
Sofie mee aan de plaat "Live in Cape Town", een opname van een opmerkelijk
concert met The Cape Town String Ensemble en andere internationaal
gerenommeerde artiesten als Stacy Rowles (Californië), Silvia Droste
(Duitsland) en Denise Jannah (Nederland).
Met het album "So Far, So Good" (CNR), bewees Sofie alweer dat ze een grote variatie aan stijlen aankan, en blende ze pop, jazz, funk en soul tot een internationaal toegankelijke sound.
In 1995 kwam er "I Wanna Know what Love is", een uitzonderlijk duet met
soullegende Bobby Womack op het album Love Loops. "Always Be There", een nummer van hetzelfde album dat ze schreef in samenwerking met haar producer Hervé Martens, is tot op vandaag de tune van een populaire tv-serie in Japan.
In 1999 was Sofie aan het werk als rol van Maria Magdalena in de zeer succesvolle rock-opera "Jezus Christ Superstar" (Vorst Nationaal), samen met o.a. Soulsister-zanger Paul Michiels en de betreurde Robert Mosuse.
2004 - Het album "Tell Me Something Good" (TTT Records) met gastoptreden van Toots Thielemans kende zijn weg naar de radio’s met 2 hitsingels : The Finest en I found Lovin.
Sofie is al een paar jaar docente zang aan de jazzafdeling in het Conservatorium van Gent; ze is ook docente popmuziek voor de Halewynstichting in Dworp.
In 2006 zetelde ze als jurylid in het VTM programma “ Just The Two of Us”.
Sofie’s recentste project was een CD met klassiek orkest (The Beethoven Academy gedirigeerd door Dirk Brossé). Het is een soort van evergreenplaat met Paul Carrack als special guest (Mike & The Mechanics, Squeeze...). Op die CD staan Afie, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Somewhere Out There, …
De officiële voorstelling van deze CD vond plaats in de Bourla Schouwburg te Antwerpen op 1 maart 2007.
