De Mens

2012 is een jubileumjaar voor De Mens: ze staan reeds 20 jaar op de planken. En dat wordt gevierd zoals we het van Frank Vanderlinden en co gewoon zijn: in stijl. Met een nieuwe single 'Wij' en een compilatiealbum 'Muziek!' Geniet van enkele nieuwe nummers of hun klassiekers op Labadoux!

Een reünie-cd ! Na 18 jaar De Mens, en na de solo-uitstap van Frank Vander linden (“Frank Vander linden”/”In de walszaal”, overal op drie en vier sterren onthaald), kwamen Vander linden, Michel De Coster en Dirk Jans samen met één nieuw doel: een album maken dat nog eens diep en hoog en ver ging.
Het resultaat heet ‘Is dit mijn hart ?’  Rijk en gevarieerd qua stijl en sfeer,  en muzikaal  tot in de details uitgewerkt.
“Een groep, een èchte groep, is nooit een oppervlakkig gegeven”, zegt De Coster,  “je moet samen muzikaal èn emotioneel tot het uiterste gaan, anders heeft het geen zin”.
En waarover gaat ‘Is dit mijn hart ?’  ?
“Over depressie en feest” zegt Vander linden. “Cd’s en boeken moeten tegenwoordig over één ding gaan. Zo van: dit is X zijn echtscheidingsplaat, dat is het boek waarin Y zijn inzinking van zich afschrijft … maar een goede cd gaat over àlles.”
De muziek is zacht en hard en alles wat daartussen ligt. De Mens heeft een eigen karakter, maar heeft zich nooit aan één stijl gebonden. “Er zijn al genoeg cd’s die één geluid aanhouden”, zegt Dirk Jans. Van de gitaarpop van ‘Hier komt mijn schip’ en ‘Ambulancier’ naar de mijmeringen van ‘Ooit’ en ‘Bleek’, tot de harde rock van ‘Buiten spelen’: de middelen variëren, het doel is hetzelfde – de luisteraar meenemen en vasthouden. Op die manier is ‘Is dit mijn hart ?’ een soort alternatieve Het Beste Van De Mens, met zelfs ruimte voor nieuwe kleuren, zoals de emopop van ‘Ik droomde dat ik sliep’ of de neo-new wave van ‘Ik besta’.
Noem het een reünie-album van een groep die domweg vergeten te splitten is. Tien cd’s in achttien jaar, het is niet niks. En juist daarom gaat ‘Is dit mijn hart ?’ dieper, hoger, verder dan alles wat voorafging.
DE MENS in 2009: LUID & DUIDELIJK (zomer 2009)
De Mens bestaat 17 jaar en 10 cd’s lang en kan terugblikken op 600 succesvolle optredens. Misschien zeggen letters hier nog meer dan cijfers. Dit zijn de titels van hun radiohits en live-meezingers:

Kieran Halpin

Kieran Halpin is een Ierse gitarist en songwriter die al 20 albums uitbracht. Met zijn krachtige, akoestische gitaarsound houdt hij zowel in kleine folkclubs als op grote festivals het publiek volledig in de ban. Op Labadoux brengt hij bovendien de uitstekende gitarist Jimmy Smith mee.

Since 1979 Kieran Halpin has recorded 18 albums, one live DVD and published 2 songbooks with 50 songs in each book. He is a successful songwriter with many of his songs covered by other artists such as Ilse De Lange(All The Answers), Vin Garbutt, Dolores Keane, Geraldine McGowan, Tom McConville, Niamh Parsons, The Battlefield Band, Flossie and the late John Wright. In fact his songs are performed in clubs, pubs and concert halls throughout the world. Some have also been translated into German, Finnish and Spanish! He has recorded albums in his native Ireland, Scotland, London, Nashville, Oxford and Sydney.
2011 sees the release of his 20th album – the devil and his dealing – a remarkable achievement over a 38 year career – consistently prolific and artistically inventive. The new CD has 11 new songs and features the musicianship of Yogi Jockusch on percussion, Jimmy Smith on guitar, Manfred Leuchter on accordion, Percy Pursglove on double bass and Marion Fleetwood on backing vocals.
2012 will start with the release of Songbook 3 which will contain all the songs from the last 3 CD’s.
Whilst his albums are always something to look forward to it is live on stage where Halpin makes his mark. Powerful and passionate, intimate and intense, he is impossible to ignore. His voice has such an edge to it that he sounds like he is living every song. He has managed to marry his intelligent and thought provoking lyrics with great melodies and has developed over the years into a writer with a style all his own. All of this is underscored by an incisive wit in his introductions which helps an audience to understand where the song comes from and hint at where it might be going.
Halpin is equally at home playing to a small folk club audience and a large festival crowd.

Het Gentse Contraband brengt sterke Nederlandstalige popsongs. Zanger Bart Decleer wordt omringd door elektrische gitaar, viool, basgitaar en drums. Contraband is de winnaar van de Nederpopprijs 2010, en binnenkort lanceren ze hun debuutalbum!

Lezzamie

Lezzamie brengt een bijzonder uitgebreid oeuvre: van hedendaagse Scandinavische folk, tot zelfgeschreven Nederlandstalige nummers en stevige gitaarfolk. Zo staat Lezzamie garant voor een boeiende reis doorheen de traditionele, hedendaagse en eigenwijze folk. Proef zelf... op Labadoux!
Lezzamie kan je onderbrengen bij de Vlaamse folk, maar dan in ruime zin. De groep bestaat uit vrienden uit de Gentse agglomeratie die elkaar in muzikale creativiteit vonden.
Traditionele en hedendaagse Europese folk van Scandinavië tot Galicië wordt  met uit de groep gegroeide interpretaties neergezet en afgewisseld met een gevarieerd repertorium van eigen songs in verschillende talen, en eigen instrumentale nummers die nu eens neigen naar stevige gitaarfolk  en dan weer akoestisch intiem kunnen klinken. Zo staat Lezzamie met een 7-koppige bende muzikanten garant voor een boeiende reis doorheen de traditionele, hedendaagse en eigenwijze folk.
De groep haalde 2 maal  de finale van de Folkrally, sierde de  affiche van Dranouter aan Zee, en bracht in 2008 de CD Lezzamie in eigen beheer uit. Proef zelf...

RBLS Passchendaele 1917 Pipes & Drums
Passchendaele 1917 Pipes & Drums, vroeger bekend onder de naam Fleming Pipe Band, huist sinds enkele jaren in West- Vlaanderen. De band groeide uit tot een echte topper in het genre en werd vorig jaar nog Belgisch kampioen!
De band is oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Gent en begon haar geschiedenis onder de naam Fleming Pipe Band. De eerste tekenen vinden we terug bij het vertrek van de Flemish Caledonian Pipes & Drums (beter gekend als de clan Mackenzie) uit de VCS (Vlaams Caledonische Society). Enkele spelende leden die achter bleven in de VCS besloten om opnieuw te beginnen onder de naam Flemish Pipes and Drums (april 1997).

De band kende zoals elke band zijn pipe major wissels, maar bet ledenaantal bleef groeien. Naast de vaste waarden uit de streek kwamen er ook mensen uit West-Vlaanderen en Antwerpen naar Gent om er de Schotse muziek aan te leren. Er kwamen langzamerhand ook meer optredens buiten de VCS, en de drang naar een uniforme kilt groeide. In het voorjaar 2001 was het eindelijk zo ver, er werd voor de Fleming een standaard uniform ontworpen en kwam er eigen kilt die de naam Angus Ghent draagt.
Eind februari 2002 besloot de VCS geen pipe band meer in de vereniging op te nemen, waardoor de Fleming vanaf dit moment op eigen benen stond. Om bet muzikaal niveau hoog te houden werd er met de band regelmatig deelgenomen aan verschillende wedstrijden en werd er beroep gedaan op externe leraars. Dankzij de inzet van de leden en de goede publiciteit bleven de aanvragen tot optredens binnenstromen. Stilaan kreeg de Fleming door zijn binding met West-Vlaanderen meer en meer de kans om optredens in het kader van Wereldoorlog I te verzorgen. Naast deze herdenkingen, werden ook huwelijken, officiële openingen en televisie opdrachten vervuld. In 2003 ging de band van start met een eigen tijdschrift: de Fleming Tribune. Op deze wijze werd de band met de steunende en/of niet spelende leden verder versterkt.
Begin 2007 kreeg de Fleming een nieuw bestuur. En werd er beslist te verhuizen naar West-Vlaanderen, van waar de meeste spelers afkomstig zijn. Daarmee werd de Fleming de eerste actieve pipe band in West-Vlaanderen.
Eveneens begin 2007 begonnen we met het project Passchendaele 1917 Pipes & Drums waarbij de Fleming optredens verzorgt in een authentiek Schots Wereldoorlog I uniform anno 1917. Twee jaar lang speelde de band onder twee namen. Om naamsverwarring te vermijden besloten de bandleden in mei 2009 de naam Fleming Pipe Band te laten vallen en voortaan enkel nog als Passchendaele 1917 Pipes & Drums door het leven te gaan.

Camille O'Sullivan

De Ierse actrice en zangeres Camille O'Sullivan komt tijdens Labadoux voor de eerste keer naar België! Ze is internationaal bekend om haar interpretaties van de muziek van o.a. Jacques Brel, Nick Cave en Tom Waits. Ze trad op in een uitverkocht Roundhouse's theatre in Londen en het Sydney Opera House in Australië. Een absolute buitenkans!

A courageous and singular performer, Camille is one of the most gifted interpreters of narrative songs yet to appear’ The Irish Times
Born in London of a French mother and Irish father, Camille moved to Cork, Ireland when she was a child. Prior to running away with the ‘circus’ ‘The Famous Spiegeltent’ and La Clique touring the world, she took a circuitous route to becoming a performer. She studied Fine Art Painting for a year and then went to UCD and graduated as an Architect, winning the prestigious Architectural Association of Ireland Award in 2000. She lectured in University and exhibited in the Royal Hibernian Academy as a painter.
Self taught as a singer with a background in acting, it was whilst living in Berlin, she became intrigued by the narrative direct music of Weimar composers Eisler, Hollaender and Weill, described as ‘art song: exploring themes of politics, sexuality, life’s degenerates, democracy seedier side of life, desolate love’, and on her return home was inspired by the late great Agnes Bernelle performances back in Dublin’s now defunct Da Club where O’Sullivan had also started to sing. After she had a serious car accident- with a year to recuperate she decided to leave architecture to become a performer.
As much storyteller as singer, Camille has a respected  international reputation for her interpretations of the songs of Jacques Brel, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Kurt Weill and shows a fearlessness in her work with her emotional intense performances. Chameleon like on stage, each song has a different character with its own story to tell and emotion to inhabit.
‘inspired by these dramatic narrative songs: dark & light: bittersweet stories, songs that held a mirror up to the stranger side of society.  They were not out to please the audience but more to provoke them, to question what is around them and what exists in them, in a way what theatre does; the crack within oneself, comfort of black humor, melancholy, darkness versus innocence, exposing and celebrating your madness and vulnerability.
Fierce, amusing and mesmerizing, Camille transforms each song she performs into a grippingly theatrical experience, inextricably drawing her audience into a world inhabited by the bizarre and wonderful. She has been inaccurately described by some as a burlesque artist or just simply labeled as a Cabaret artist, however she would rather descibe it as a mixture of rock, theatre with a nod to German Weimar Kabaret -She sees herself as a performer trying to make sense of a song, like an actress analyzing a monologue, finding it’s truthful emotion or just simply singing and getting off on the music rocking out!

As an actress she has appeared in the films Over the Edge, November Afternoon (Director Once: John Carney). After being spotted by Ewan Bremner (Spud from Trainspotting) in La Clique, Camille appeared in the Oscar-nominated Mrs. Henderson Presents alongside Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and Will young directed by Stephen Frears. Theatrical productions include of One Night Stand, Tonight Lola Blau and Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd at the gate theatre, Dublin. She has been a special guest panelist several times on John Kelly’s arts programmer The View (RTÉ One).
More recently Camille was invited to perform on the BBC’s seminal music programme, Later With Jools. She was a guest star in the legendary Oliver award winning La Clique, of which she is an original cast member, in London’s West End. She recently toured with Shane McGowan and Sharon Shannon. She appeared in the Barbican alongside Jarvis Cocker, Mary Margaret O'Hara and a tribute to the music of Nick Drake performing with Martha Wainwright, Graham Coxon, Beth Orton, Harper Simon, Vashti Bunyan and Stuart Murdoch. She performed recently at the Barbican tribute to Jacque Brel with Marc Almond, Diamanda Galas and Momus
With 5-star sell out seasons in UK, New York, Australia tour inc Sydney Opera House, Edinburgh and recent 2 sell-out shows at London’s legendary Roundhouse Theatre and QEH Southbank this year, O'Sullivan recently took The Dark Angel on a six week UK tour, Latitude & Glastonbury Festivals. She shall be supporting Jools Holland on his autumn tour 09 commencing in the Royal Albert Hall., her own 6 week run in the West End London at the Apollo Theatre and returning to Sydney Opera House to perform in Hal Wilners Rogue Galleries with Marianne Faithful and Tim Robbins outside on the forecourt...as Camille would say MEOW!!

The Wishing Well

The Wishing Well bestaat uit verschillende muzikanten van over de hele wereld. Ze mengen moeiteloos pop, rock en folk tot een feestelijk geheel. Deze band stond al op het podium met James Morrison, Seal en Joss Stone. Dit bruisend ensemble met instrumenten van viool tot cello, samen met de prachtige stem van zanger Jai Larkan heeft alles in huis voor een spetterend optreden op Labadoux!

Beguiling orchestral and lush, The Wishing Well create spellbinding sounds which produce a rich tapestry of mesmerizing folk, pop and rock. Originally hailing from Australia, the band now features an international group of troubadours that spans 3 continents (Australia, England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, Spain and USA).... Sherman

Sherman is de band van jonge belofte Steven Bossuyt, een singer-songwriter pur sang. In 2009 besloot hij zijn kans te wagen en naar Londen te vertrekken. BBC2 viste hem op en nodigde hem uit voor een live-sessie met het liedje 'on your side'. Sindsdien zijn zijn alternatieve popsongs ook bij ons niet meer van de hitlijsten weg te slaan. Talent van eigen bodem dat je zeker niet mag missen!

The New Fools

Fans van Bob Dylan, opgelet! The New Fools is een Bob Dylan Tribute Band die werd opgericht in '81, maar onderging verschillende naamsveranderingen zoals 'Bick Dick and his Bluesy Twins' en 'The Mighty Foremen'. In 2006 beslisten de bandleden om zich louter en alleen op Bob Dylan's oeuvre te storten, en met succes!

Ben, Yves and Muddy Jack founded The New fools in 1981.
The trio then played skiffle and blues and called themselves "Bick Dick and his Bluesy Twins".
In 1988, Jan Hendriks joined the band, playing keyboards and organ. "Piek" came to play his bassguitar.
The band then was called "The Mighty Foremen".
In 1992 the band was called "After the flood"
It is 1993 as band is called "The New Fools", Ben Van Kemenade then plays the bass, and Werner Cox is on Lead Guitar
After years of bassguitar from 'Piek', then Ben and then Thieu, in 1994 Luc Govers was asked to play with the Fools for one gig.
But they cannot get rid off the guy, an he's still with the band.
Not much later, Willy Mertens replaces Werner Cox on lead guitar, and Dirk Lehaen joins the band to play the rythm guitar.
In 2000, The Fools were 'extended' with backing vocals (Sandra, Heidi, Heidi, Kristien) and a brass section (Steven, Koen, Koen, Stefan, Daniëlle).
Playing soul music and old hits, the fools made a crowd of 1500 swing as well as they did a café.
In 2002 return to their basics, no more backing vocals or brass section.
In 2006 the band democratically decides to play only songs from mister Dylan, and with succes.
Ben founded the band with Yves and "Muddy Jack" in 1981
He wrote all the songs for the CD in 1998.
Being the upper Bob fan of band, and with a voice sounding just like mr Zimmerman,
singing Dylan' songs was logical thing to do in 2006.

DE EERSTE NAMEN !!!

Labadoux is een vzw uit het West-Vlaamse Ingelmunster dat jaarlijks een muziekfestival organiseert. Traditioneel start het driedaagse festival de eerste vrijdag van mei. De eerste editie werd georganiseerd in 1988. Na enkele verschillende locaties heeft het festival sinds 1997 zijn vaste stek gevonden langs het kanaal, ter hoogte van de Wantebrug.

Labadoux vindt zijn muzikale inspiratie vooral in de volksmuziek met Angelsaksische wortels, maar gaat nog een stuk verder. Labadoux presenteert muziek vanuit de buik, muziek met een ziel, muziek met wortels, zeg maar ‘echte rootsmuziek’. Labadoux is in die optiek niet enkel een folkfestival, maar een ruimdenkend festival dat zijn liefde voor de folk doet versmelten met daarmee verbonden muziekstijlen.

Labadoux is een middelgroot festival dat doorgaat in meerdere bevloerde en verwarmde tenten. De concerttent benadert de sfeer van een concertzaal. In de pubtent gaan vooral sfeervolle, dansbare concerten door. In de clubtent kunnen de kinderen hun hartje ophalen aan een ruim aanbod kinderanimatie. Dat is ook de plaats waar een leuke scheut comedy geserveerd wordt. In de Foyer kan men dan weer genieten van een heerlijk glas tijdens een gezellig en intiem tapijtconcert. De centrale ‘peloeze’ is een knus binnenplein, dé ontmoetingsplaats bij uitstek.

Het is heerlijk vertoeven op Labadoux, waar sfeer de hoogmis viert, waar jong en oud samen één grote familie vormen, waar bier in een glas nog kan, waar muziek wordt geserveerd in zijn (h)eerlijkste vorm!
