Johnny Burnettes broer Dorsey was een veelzijdig artiest. In Johnny’s rock-‘n-rolltrio was Dorsey de man van de verschroeiende ‘slapping bass’. Als soloartiest scoorde hij ook, maar samen met Johnny maakte hij het zeker als songschrijver voor o.a. Ricky Nelson. Daarnaast was Dorsey geen onbekend producer. In die functie was hij verantwoordelijk voor Stevie Wonder, toen nog Little Stevie Wonders sessie voor Tamla.
Op 6 jarige leeftijd kreeg Dorsey zijn eerste gitaar, waarop hij als een bezetene oefende. Karakterieel was Dorsey nogal opvliegend, waardoor hij meerdere malen betrokken raakte bij vechtpartijen. Als jongeling droomde hij dan ook van een carrière als bokser. Samen met Johnny bezocht hij dan ook de lokale boksclubs, al zou spoedig blijken dat dit zijn carrière niet zou worden.
Over de succesvolle beginjaren van Dorsey vallen er heel wat knappe uitgaves te vinden in de Bear Family catalogus. Een catalogus die echter nog niet compleet was, want de schitterende opnames die Dorsey tussen 1962 en 1965 maakte, ontbraken. Dat gebrek wordt nu de wereld uit geholpen door deze dubbel-cd, met opnames die hij maakte voor Sinatras Reprise label en op Motowns niet lang bestaande sublabel Mel-o-dy. Deze worden nog aangevuld met singles die Dorsey in diezelfde periode opnam voor Lama en Imperial. Dit alles vult de eerste cd. Het tweede schijfje is zelfs nog indrukwekkender. Hier wordt Dorsey Burnettes muzikaal nalatenschap tot op het bot uitgespit. Deze bevat 20 niet eerder gehoorde imponerende originele opnames, met o.a. nummers die Dorsey schreef samen met Joe Osborn, bassist bij de Wrecking Crew.
Beide cd’s geven een mooi beeld van Dorseys passie voor rock-‘n-roll, country, soul en pop.
Dit dubbelalbum imponeert al dadelijk met ‘Back To Nature’ dat laat horen dat Dorsey rock-‘n-roll, country en pop probleemloos in één song weet te verenigen, en dat doet hij nog vaker.  Het hoge niveau dat deze song haalt, wordt moeiteloos volgehouden gedurende beide cd’s, waardoor het moeilijk wordt om hoogtepunten eruit te pikken, want ieder nummer is een hoogtepunt op zich. Niet alleen zijn dit allemaal enorm sterke composities. Ze worden dan ook nog vertolkt door een artiest met een prachtige indrukwekkende stem, die bovendien een erg groot inlevingsvermogen bezit. Bovendien baden beide cd’s in een sublieme sound. Pure klasse!
De in totaal 45 tracks boeien van begin tot einde en laten een schat aan indrukwekkende opnames horen, die Dorsey tussen 1962 en 1965 maakte. ‘The Complete Reprise and Motown Recordings plus … (1962-1965)’ is zonder meer de schakel die tot nog toe ontbrak in Dorseys muzikale erfenis.
In het geïllustreerd, uitgebreid en goed onderbouwd booklet krijg je een gedetailleerde biografie van de hand van Bill Dahl, alsook een discografie door Nico Feuerbach.
Maar………wees er snel bij want deze uitgave is gelimiteerd. Ze werd wereldwijd slechts op 1000 genummerde exemplaren uitgebracht. Liefhebbers weten wat hun doen te staat. Een onmisbare uitgave die je Dorsey Burnette opnames zonder meer vervolledigt. Een meer dan absolute aanrader!

Johnny Burnette's brother Dorsey was a versatile artist. In Johnny's rock-'n-roll trio, Dorsey was the man of the scorching 'slapping bass'. He also scored as a solo artist, but together with Johnny he certainly made it as a songwriter for Ricky Nelson, among others. Dorsey was also a well-known producer. In that role he was responsible for Stevie Wonder, then still Little Stevie Wonder's session for Tamla.
At the age of 6, Dorsey got his first guitar, on which he practiced like a maniac. Dorsey was quite temperamental, which caused him to get involved in fights several times. As a youngster he dreamed of a career as a boxer. Together with Johnny he visited the local boxing clubs, although it soon became apparent that this would not be his career.
There are many great releases about Dorsey's successful early years in the Bear Family catalogue. A catalogue that was not yet complete, however, because the wonderful recordings that Dorsey made between 1962 and 1965 were missing. That shortcoming is now being remedied by this double CD, with recordings he made for Sinatra's Reprise label and on Motown's not-so-long-existing sublabel Mel-o-dy. These are supplemented with singles that Dorsey recorded in the same period for Lama and Imperial. All this fills the first CD. The second disc is even more impressive. Here, Dorsey Burnette's musical legacy is thoroughly explored. It contains 20 previously unheard impressive original recordings, including songs that Dorsey wrote together with Joe Osborn, bassist with the Wrecking Crew.
Both CDs give a good picture of Dorsey's passion for rock-'n-roll, country, soul and pop.
This double album immediately impresses with 'Back To Nature', which shows that Dorsey effortlessly combines rock-'n-roll, country and pop in one song, and he does so even more often. The high level that this song reaches is effortlessly maintained throughout both CDs, making it difficult to pick out highlights, because each song is a highlight in itself. Not only are these all enormously strong compositions. They are also performed by an artist with a beautiful, impressive voice, who also has a great deal of empathy. Moreover, both CDs are bathed in a sublime sound. Pure class!
The 45 tracks in total captivate from start to finish and show a wealth of impressive recordings that Dorsey made between 1962 and 1965. ‘The Complete Reprise and Motown Recordings plus … (1962-1965)’ is without a doubt the link that was missing in Dorsey’s musical legacy until now.
