​Bij het grote publiek is Etta James vooral gekend door de song ‘I Just Want To Make Love To You’, nummer dat gebruikt werd in een promofilmpje van een bekende frisdrank. Nummer dat trouwens ook op deze compilatie terug te vinden is. Voor de bluesliefhebber was Etta James echter reeds langer een gevestigde waarde. Haar muzikale nalatenschap is indrukwekkend. Naast stomende rhythm & blues en meeslepende blues kon Etta James ook een aardig stukje rocken. Van de rockende rhythm & blues uit haar beginjaren bundelde het Duitse Bear Family Records 29 nummers op deze uitgave. Songs die Etta opnam voor Modern/Kent en Chess/Argo.
Het album trapt af met ‘Tough Lover’ uit 1956, dat meteen Etta’s rockend kantje laat horen. Haar enorme veelzijdigheid typeert ‘It Ain’t One Thing’, een duet dat ze samen met haar toenmalige aanbidder Harvey Fuqua schreef en ook opnam. Nummer dat tevens kan bogen op een heerlijke doo-wop backing vocals. Etta James wist haar songs wel vaker te voorzien van schitterende achtergrondstemmen. Zo maken The Moonglows deel uit van ‘Seven Days Fool’, terwijl ze met de shuffle ‘Good Rockin’ Daddy’ haar tweede hit voor Kent scoorde.
Johnny Otis ontdekte heel wat artiesten. Hij was het ook die in 1952 het trio The Creolettes, waarvan Etta toen deel uitmaakte, ontdekte. In 1954 nam ze ook haar grote hit ‘The Wallflower’ (Roll With Me Henry)’, dat een antwoord was op ‘Work With Me Annie’ van The Midnighters, op met Otis’ band en vocalist Richard Berry.
Willie Dixon, bluesartiest en genie op de staande bas, zorgde voor heel wat hits. Etta James bedient zich op dit album tweemaal van zijn composities. Een eerste maal doet ze dat in een ander duet, ook nu weer met Harvey, in ‘Spoonful’. Nummer dat in Etta’s handen een boost van jewelste krijgt. Een tweede maal doet ze dat met het reeds eerder genoemde ‘I Just Want To Make Love With You’. Een nummer naar haar hand zetten, herhaalt James nogmaals in het van Ray Charles bekende ‘What’d I Say’. Enorm knap is tevens ‘The Pick-Up’, waarin ze communiceert met de sax van Maxwell Davis. En ook haar rhythm & bluesversie van ‘By The Light Of The Silvery Moon’ is indrukwekkend.
Etta James zoog ook heel wat invloeden uit de jazz op. Daar krijg je hier een mooi voorbeeld van in het prachtige ‘Market Place’. Gospel maakt dan weer eerder deel uit van ‘Strange Things Happening’.
Andere gekende nummers van haar zijn o.a. ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me’ en haar versie van Jimmy Reed’s ‘Baby What You Want Me To Do’.
Etta James overleed op 20 januari 2012 op 73 jarige leeftijd, maar liet een indrukwekkende muzikale erfenis achter, waarvan je op dit album ongeremd van kan genieten. Een aanrader!
Het album is voorzien van een 34 pagina’s tellend booklet, met daarin alle gegeven betreffende de tracks en een bio van de hand van Bill Dahl.

Etta James is best known to the general public for the song ‘I Just Want To Make Love To You’, a song that was used in a promotional video for a well-known soft drink. Incidentally, this song can also be found on this compilation. However, Etta James had already been an established name for blues lovers for some time. Her musical legacy is impressive. In addition to steaming rhythm & blues and compelling blues, Etta James could also rock quite a bit. The German Bear Family Records bundled 29 songs from the rocking rhythm & blues from her early years on this release. Songs that Etta recorded for Modern/Kent and Chess/Argo. The album kicks off with ‘Tough Lover’ from 1956, which immediately shows Etta’s rocking side. Her enormous versatility is typified by ‘It Ain’t One Thing’, a duet that she wrote and recorded with her then admirer Harvey Fuqua. A song that also boasts wonderful doo-wop backing vocals. Etta James often provided her songs with wonderful background vocals. The Moonglows were part of ‘Seven Days Fool’, while she scored her second hit for Kent with the shuffle ‘Good Rockin’ Daddy’.
Johnny Otis discovered many artists. He was also the one who discovered the trio The Creolettes, of which Etta was a member at the time, in 1952. In 1954 she also recorded her big hit ‘The Wallflower’ (Roll With Me Henry)’, which was an answer to ‘Work With Me Annie’ by The Midnighters, with Otis’ band and vocalist Richard Berry.
Willie Dixon, blues artist and genius on the upright bass, provided many hits. Etta James uses his compositions twice on this album. The first time she does so in another duet, again with Harvey, in ‘Spoonful’. A number that gets a real boost in Etta’s hands. She does this a second time with the previously mentioned ‘I Just Want To Make Love With You’. James repeats how to make a song her own in the Ray Charles-famous ‘What’d I Say’. ‘The Pick-Up’ is also very clever, in which she communicates with Maxwell Davis’ sax. Her rhythm & blues version of ‘By The Light Of The Silvery Moon’ is also very impressive.
Etta James also absorbed a lot of influences from jazz. You get a good example of that here in the beautiful ‘Market Place’. Gospel is more part of ‘Strange Things Happening’.
Other well-known songs of hers include ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me’ and her version of Jimmy Reed’s ‘Baby What You Want Me To Do’.

Etta James passed away on 20 January 2012 at the age of 73, but left bebind an impressive musical legacy, which you can enjoy uninhibited on this album. Highly recommended!
