​Met ‘Way Up !’ presenteert onze eigen Shakedown Tim zijn nieuwste album op het Rhythm Bomb label. ‘Way Up !’ bevat 11 songs, waarvan Tim er 6 uit zijn pen liet vloeien. Als The Rhythm Revue fungeren Ilias Scotch op toetsen, Kurt Lens bespeelt de staande bas en Koen Van Peteghem zit achter de drums. Het drietal verzorgt tevens de backing vocals. Verder zijn er gastbijdragen van Steven Troch, Tims voormalige kompaan bij Fried Bourbon, Naomi Sijmons, Little Walter (?????? nee niet die, maar wel……..Tims hond), Bart Stone, James Harman en Bird Stevens. Opener ‘Feed My Body To The Fishes’ zorgt met een honky tonk piano intro al meteen voor een nostalgische fifties bluessfeer. En let trouwens ook op Tims prima werk op de zes snaren. De volgende track ‘Messin’ With The Blues’ is een pracht van een slowblues. Hier wordt Tim vocaal bijgestaan door Ilias Scotch, terwijl Steven Troch een aardig stukje op de bluesharp blaast. Bluesartiest en gitarist Tiny Legs Tim overleed op 25 mei 2022 op veel te jonge leeftijd. Tiny Legs Tim zorgde samen met Shakedown Tim voor onvergetelijke avonden in de Missy Sippy Blues Club in Gent. Die sfeer wordt hier nog eens met verve overgedaan, wat meteen een mooi eerbetoon vormt aan de betreurde bluesgitarist. De veelzijdigheid van Tim Ielegems wordt nog maar eens duidelijk in de rhythm & bluescover van Eddie Boyds ‘Drifting’. Het album mag dan wel ‘Way Up !’ als titel hebben, maar er is ook een ‘Way Down’. Prachtige uptempo song met Shakedown op de resonatorgitaar, gesteund door de scheurende harp van Troch. Voor ‘You’re The Boss’ werd beroep gedaan op een Leiber/Stoller compositie, met als resultaat een mooi ietwat zwoel duet, met uitstekende vocale bijdrage van Naomi Sijmons. Amos Milburn was een bekende Amerikaanse rhythm & blueszanger en pianist. Met een gitarist als Ilias Scotch in de gelederen, mocht ‘Real Crazy’ zeker niet ontbreken. Prima versie!
Voor ‘Frolic Time’, drijvend op een heerlijk swingend Charlestonritme, kreeg Tim inspiratie van zijn hond Little Walter, die volgens de linernotes een ietwat eigenzinnig dier is en zich op de intro ook laat horen. Voor de opname van ‘A Sinner’s Gospel’ moeten we terug naar 2018. Tim draagt deze song op aan Gene Taylor en James Harman. Deze laatste werkte ook mee aan de opname, die tussen twee concerten, in Bird Stevens’ studio gebeurde. En ook hier valt er weer enorm te genieten van Shakedown Tims uitmuntend gitaarspel.
Bluesy maar ook licht jazzy sluit het album met het instrumentale ‘Please Close The Door’, dat de instrumentale virtuositeit van de complete band nog een laatste keer in de spots plaatst, waarna de deur echt wordt dichtgeklapt.
Met ‘Way Up !’ hebben Shakedown Tim and The Rhythm Revue een prima hedendaagse bluesschijf afgeleverd. Hedendaags maar ook met respect voor het genre en de legendarische bluesartiesten. The Rhythm Revue is een goed geoliede muzikale machine, die naadloos aansluit bij Shakedown Tims fantastisch gitaarspel. ‘Way Up !’??? Natuurlijk en …….een aanrader, zonder meer!

With ‘Way Up!’ our own Shakedown Tim presents his latest album on the Rhythm Bomb label. ‘Way Up!’ contains 11 songs, 6 of which were written by Tim Ielegems. As The Rhythm Revue Ilias Scotch acts on keys, Kurt Lens plays the upright bass and Koen Van Peteghem is behind the drums. The trio also provides backing vocals. There are also guest contributions from Steven Troch, Tim’s former buddy at Fried Bourbon, Naomi Sijmons, Little Walter (?????? no not that one, but yes……..Tim’s dog), Bart Stone, James Harman and Bird Stevens. Opener ‘Feed My Body To The Fishes’ immediately creates a nostalgic fifties blues atmosphere with a honky tonk piano intro. And by the way, also pay attention to Tim’s excellent work on the six strings. The next track ‘Messin’ With The Blues’ is a beautiful slow blues. Here Tim is vocally supported by Ilias Scotch, while Steven Troch blows a nice piece on the blues harp. Blues artist and guitarist Tiny Legs Tim passed away, too young on May 25, 2022. Tiny Legs Tim, together with Shakedown Tim, provided unforgettable evenings at the Missy Sippy Blues Club in Ghent. That atmosphere is recreated here with gusto, which immediately forms a beautiful tribute to the late blues guitarist. The versatility of Tim Ielegems is once again evident in the rhythm & blues cover of Eddie Boyd's 'Drifting'. The album may have 'Way Up!' as its title, but there is also a 'Way Down'. Beautiful uptempo song with Shakedown on the resonator guitar, supported by Troch's tearing harp. For ‘You’re The Boss’ a Leiber/Stoller composition was used, resulting in a beautiful, somewhat sultry duet, with an excellent vocal contribution from Naomi Sijmons. Amos Milburn was a well-known American rhythm & blues singer and pianist. With a guitarist like Ilias Scotch in the ranks, Milburn’s ‘Real Crazy’ certainly had to be included. Great version!
For ‘Frolic Time’, floating on a wonderfully swinging Charleston rhythm, Tim was inspired by his dog Little Walter, who according to the liner notes is a somewhat quirky animal and who also makes himself heard in the intro. For the recording of ‘A Sinner’s Gospel’ we have to go back to 2018. Tim dedicates this song to Gene Taylor and James Harman. The latter also contributed to the recording, which took place between two concerts in Bird Stevens’ studio. And here too, you can really enjoy Shakedown Tim’s excellent guitar playing. Bluesy but also slightly jazzy, the album closes with the instrumental ‘Please Close The Door’, which puts the instrumental virtuosity of the entire band in the spotlight one last time, after which the door is really slammed shut.
With ‘Way Up!’ Shakedown Tim and The Rhythm Revue have delivered an excellent contemporary blues record. Contemporary but also with respect for the genre and the legendary blues artists. The Rhythm Revue is a well-oiled musical machine, which seamlessly connects with Shakedown Tim’s fantastic guitar playing. ‘Way Up!’??? Of course and …….highly recommended, without a doubt!
