​Met The Rhythm Rockets werpt Bear Family Records een blik op de rockabilly uit Miami. Misschien frons je even de wenkbrauwen bij de link ‘Miami en rockabilly’, maar bij beluistering blijkt al vlug dat Miami, alhoewel ver van het muzikaal centrum gelegen, The Rhythm Rockets het nieuwe genre een toch wel eigen identiteit bezorgden.
De kern van The Rhythm Rockets werd gevormd door de broers Ray en Donnie Pate. Twee enorm getalenteerde tieners die opgroeiden met de gospel, country en rhythm & blues, die ze via radioprogramma’s absorbeerden. Uit die invloeden ontpopte zich hun eigen energiek en indrukwekkend geluid.
Toen rock-‘n-roll zich uitbreidde tot Florida, werden The Rhythm Rockets al snel onderdeel van de lokale scene. Optredens op jamborees en in de legendarische shows van DJ Milt ‘Mr. Rock & Roll’ Oshins volgden en ze deelden zelfs het podium met grootmeester Carl Perkins.
De broers Donnie en Ray schreven alle nummers en eenmaal in de studio bloeiden ze uit tot zelfzekere en toegewijde muzikanten. Jammer genoeg bleef veel hun nummers gedurende decennia onuitgebracht en waren ze enkel sporadisch te vinden op obscure uitgaves of acetaten. Hun enige officiële release gebeurde in 1958 op het label Gulfstream Records. Verzamelaars hebben ondertussen de band ontdekt en hen de status als ‘cultband’ bezorgd. Het is dan ook verdienstelijk dat Bear Family Records nu aandacht schenkt aan The Rhythm Rockets alsook aan hun bijdrage tot de rockabilly.
Wat al dadelijk opvalt is dat de broers Pate het talent hadden om catchy songs te componeren. Songs die door hun kracht zich tussen je oren nestelen en daar zijn Donnies eigen gitaargeluid en Rays krachtige en overtuigende zang zeker niet vreemd aan. Dat laat zich meteen horen in de eerste track ‘My Shadow’. Rauw, energiek en enorm persoonlijk gebracht, zoals rockabilly hoort te zijn. In ‘I’ve Got That Feeling’ gebruikt Ray de alom bekende ‘knik in de stem’, maar hij weet de grens te beheren, niet overdreven maar gedoseerd gebruik geeft zonder meer een meerwaarde aan het nummer.
Donnies talent op de zes snaren etaleert hij subliem op het instrumentale ‘Donny’s Boogie’. Nummer dat in een ‘alt. take’ het album ook afsluit.
Het feit dat The Rhythm Rockets zich niet in het epicentrum van de rockabilly bevonden, wierp zeker zijn vruchten af. Jong en getalenteerd als ze waren, zochten ze een manier waarop ze zich konden onderscheiden van andere muzikanten. Dat deden ze door het componeren van krachtige song met een opbouw die vaak verschillend was. Zo konden gitaarsolo’s zowel een song openen, als zoals klassiek in het midden vallen of zelfs het nummer afsluiten. Daarenboven getuigt hun houding in de studio van een enorme professionaliteit, iets waar andere rockabillygroepjes nogal eens steken lieten vallen.
Kortom, wie denkt dat Memphis of Nashville enkel steengoede rockabilly voortbrachten, zal na beluistering van deze band uit Miami, zijn of haar mening noodgedwongen dienen te herzien.
De authentieke, rauwe, originele en sinds lang niet uitgebrachte composities van de broertjes Pate, zetten de Miami rockabilly steevast op de kaart. Alleen jammer dat daar meerdere decennia overheen moesten gaan. Niettemin is dit album een ‘must have’ voor rockabillyfans, al dien je ook nu weer razendsnel te zijn, want ook dit album is gelimiteerd op 500 exemplaren. Niet twijfelen dus!

With The Rhythm Rockets, Bear Family Records takes a look at rockabilly from Miami. You might raise an eyebrow at the link ‘Miami and rockabilly’, but upon listening, it quickly becomes apparent that Miami, although located far from the musical center, gave The Rhythm Rockets a distinct identity of their own.
The core of The Rhythm Rockets was formed by brothers Ray and Donnie Pate. Two enormously talented teenagers who grew up with gospel, country, and rhythm & blues, which they absorbed through radio programs. From those influences emerged their own energetic and impressive sound.
When rock and roll spread to Florida, The Rhythm Rockets quickly became part of the local scene. Performances at jamborees and in the legendary shows of DJ Milt ‘Mr. Rock & Roll’ Oshins followed, and they even shared the stage with grandmaster Carl Perkins. Brothers Donnie and Ray wrote all the songs, and once in the studio, they blossomed into confident and dedicated musicians. Unfortunately, many of their songs remained unreleased for decades and could only be found sporadically on obscure releases or acetates. Their only official release took place in 1958 on the Gulfstream Records label. Collectors have since discovered the band and earned them the status of a ‘cult band’. It is therefore commendable that Bear Family Records is now paying attention to The Rhythm Rockets as well as their contribution to rockabilly.
What stands out immediately is that the Pate brothers had the talent to compose catchy songs. Songs that, through their power, get stuck in your head, and Donnie’s distinctive guitar sound and Ray’s powerful and convincing vocals certainly play a part in that. This is immediately evident in the first track, ‘My Shadow’. Raw, energetic, and delivered with immense personal flair, just as rockabilly should be. In ‘I’ve Got That Feeling’, Ray uses the well-known ‘voice break’, but he manages the boundaries; not excessive but measured use undoubtedly adds value to the track.
Donnie’s talent on the six strings is sublimely on the instrumental ‘Donny’s Boogie’. A track that also closes the album in an ‘alt. take’.
The fact that The Rhythm Rockets were not at the epicenter of rockabilly certainly paid off. Young and talented as they were, they sought a way to distinguish themselves from other musicians. They did this by composing powerful songs with structures that often varied. For instance, guitar solos could open a song, drop in the middle like in classical way, or even close the track. Moreover, their attitude in the studio testifies to enormous professionalism, something other rockabilly groups often fell short of. In short, anyone who thinks that Memphis or Nashville produced only excellent rockabilly will be forced to revise their opinion after listening to this band from Miami.
The authentic, raw, original, and long-unreleased compositions by the Pate brothers have invariably put Miami rockabilly on the map. It is just a pity that it took several decades for this to happen. Nevertheless, this album is a ‘must-have’ for rockabilly fans, although you need to be lightning fast once again, as this album is also limited to 500 copies. So don't hesitate!
