​Wat series, zoals o.a. deze ‘Black Pearls’ aan het licht brengen, is dat in de helft van vorige eeuw heel wat steengoede rhythm & blues, blues en rock-‘n-roll werd uitgebracht. Alleen jammer dat niet alle opnames via major labels gebeurden. Vaak werden de nummers opgenomen via kleine lokale labels, zodat die songs als ze niet werden opgepikt door de majors, ook lokaal bleven hangen. Positief is dan weer dat de Atomicat en KokoMojo labels die minder bekende en vaak obscure songs in schitterende series bij mekaar brengen.
Dit is nu ook weer het geval op het tiende volume in de ‘Black Pearls’ serie dat als titel ‘Wiggle It!’ meekreeg. Gedurende 28 tracks wordt je andermaal ondergedompeld in de beste rockende rhythm & blues van de fifties van vorige eeuw.
Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup, die zoals we weten niet onbelangrijk was voor de start van Presley’s carrière, mag de spits afbijten met ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night’, nummer dat vele malen gecoverd werd en dat meteen verklaart waarom Crudup aan de wieg van de rock-‘n-roll mocht staan. Schenk trouwens ook aandacht aan die toffe baslijn. Voor de volgende track ‘Good Road Blues’, een klasbak van een early bluessong van Wright Holmes keren we zelfs terug naar 1948. Voor een fraai staaltje van countryblues met een knappe bluesharp kan je dan weer terecht bij Ralph Willis tijdens ‘Gonna Hop On Down The Line’. Lightning Slim is een legende binnen de blues. Terecht als je luistert naar ‘New Orleans Bound’, met ook hier indrukwekkend werk op de mondharmonica. Meer indringende bluesharp ervaar je ook op ‘Country Boy Blues’ van Pee Wee Hughes and The Delta Duo. Lekker bluesy klinkt zeker ‘Just An Army Boy’ van Boyd Gilmore. Nummer dat een tweede start nodig had en waar Ike Turner aan de piano zat.
Meer uptempo gaan we met ‘Goin’ Back Home’ van Cousin Leroy. Joe Hill Louis was gekend als ‘one man band’, waardoor zijn blues redelijk rauw klonk. Hij is hier aanwezig met het iets mildere ‘Keep Your Hands Around Me’. Een andere bluesparel serveert Little Arthur Matthews met ‘Someday Baby’, een compositie van Johnny Otis. Bekend is ook Lonesome Sundown, hier met het voortreffelijke ‘My Home Ain’t Here’. Frank Frost en drummer Sam Carr werkte nog samen met Sonny Boy Williamson II. Hier is Frost samen met The Nighthawks van de partij met ‘Everything’s Alright’, waarop Carr de drumkit bespeelt en gitarist van dienst klasbak Big Jack Johnson is. Een andere meester op de zes snaren, namelijk Eddie Taylor hoor je aan het werk op Bobo Jenkins’ ‘Nothing But Love’. En er komt geen einde aan de sublieme snarenplukkers. Zo is ook Mighty Joe Young hier present. Hij speelde met tal van grootheden in de blues. Hem hoor je op ‘To Prove My Love’ van TV Slim. Een pracht van een shuffle komt dan weer van King Charles and His Orchestra in ‘You Thrill Me’, een opname uit 1954. ‘Recht voor de raap’ blues, was het handelsmerk van J.B. Hutto. Luister hiervoor maar naar ‘Things Are So Slow’. Toen Hound Dog Taylor overleed, nam J.B. Hutto diens band The House Rockers over. Slidevirtuoos Hound Dog Taylor is dan ook vanzelfsprekend hier te vinden met ‘Baby’s Coming Home’. Gitarist en mondharmonicaspeler Woodrow Adams werkte samen met o.a. Howlin’ Wolf en Robert Nighthawk. Adams etaleert zijn talenten hier op ‘Wine Headed Woman’. Howlin’ Wolf hoor je net na Adams in ‘Crying At Daybreak’. Andere grote namen zoals mondharmonicaspeler Little Walter, gitarist Robert Lockwood Jr., bassist Willie Dixon en drummer Fred Below maken dan weer het mooie weer op John Brim’s ‘You Got Me Where You Want Me’. Parel van een blues! De titeltrack ‘Wiggle It’ van dit volume komt van Crook Junior en is een prima tot de essentie herleide bluessong. Een andere grootheid op de bluesharp Walter Horton, ook gekend als Big Walter of Shakey Horton, mag met ‘Jumpin’ Blues’ onder de naam Mumbles afsluiten.
Het tiende volume in de ‘Black Pearls’ serie maakt andermaal de naam van de serie voor meer dan de volle 100 % waar, net zoals overigens de negen eerder verschenen volumes.

What series, such as this ‘Black Pearls’, bring to light, is that in the middle of the previous century a lot of really good rhythm & blues, blues and rock-‘n-roll was released. It’s just a shame that not all recordings were done via major labels. Often the songs were recorded via small local labels, so that if those songs were not picked up by the majors, they would also stick around locally. On the positive side, the Atomicat and KokoMojo labels bring together those lesser-known and often obscure songs in wonderful series.
This is now also the case on the tenth volume in the ‘Black Pearls’ series, which was given the title ‘Wiggle It!’. During 28 tracks you are once again immersed in the best rocking rhythm & blues and blues of the fifties of the previous century. Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup, who as we know was not unimportant for the start of Presley’s career, is allowed to kick off with ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night’, a song that has been covered many times and that immediately explains why Crudup was allowed to be at the cradle of rock-‘n-roll. By the way, also pay attention to that cool bass line. For the next track ‘Good Road Blues’, a top-notch early blues song by Wright Holmes, we even return to 1948. For a beautiful example of country blues with a beautiful blues harp, you can go to Ralph Willis during ‘Gonna Hop On Down The Line’. Lightning Slim is a legend within the blues. Rightly so if you listen to ‘New Orleans Bound’, with impressive work on the harmonica here too. You can also experience more penetrating blues harp on ‘Country Boy Blues’ by Pee Wee Hughes and The Delta Duo. ‘Just An Army Boy’ by Boyd Gilmore certainly sounds nice and bluesy. Number that needed a second start and where Ike Turner was at the piano.
More uptempo we go with ‘Goin’ Back Home’ by Cousin Leroy. Joe Hill Louis was known as a ‘one man band’, which made his blues sound quite raw. He is present here with the somewhat milder ‘Keep Your Hands Around Me’. Another blues pearl is served by Little Arthur Matthews with ‘Someday Baby’, a composition by Johnny Otis. Lonesome Sundown is also well-known, here with the excellent ‘My Home Ain’t Here’. Frank Frost and drummer Sam Carr worked together with Sonny Boy Williamson II. Here Frost is present with The Nighthawks with ‘Everything’s Alright’, on which Carr plays the drum kit and the guitarist of the day is the top-notch Big Jack Johnson. Another master on the six strings, namely Eddie Taylor, can be heard at work on Bobo Jenkins’ ‘Nothing But Love’. And there is no end to the sublime string pluckers. Mighty Joe Young is also present here. He played with many greats in the blues. You can hear him on ‘To Prove My Love’ by TV Slim. A magnificent shuffle comes from King Charles and His Orchestra in ‘You Thrill Me’, a recording from 1954. ‘Straightforward’ blues was the trademark of J.B. Hutto. Just listen to ‘Things Are So Slow’ for that. When Hound Dog Taylor died, J.B. Hutto took over his band The House Rockers. Slide virtuoso Hound Dog Taylor can of course be found here with ‘Baby’s Coming Home’. Guitarist and harmonica player Woodrow Adams worked with Howlin’ Wolf and Robert Nighthawk, among others. Adams shows his talents on ‘Wine Headed Woman’. You can hear Howlin’ Wolf just after Adams in ‘Crying At Daybreak’. Other big names such as harmonica player Little Walter, guitarist Robert Lockwood Jr., bassist Willie Dixon and drummer Fred Below make the weather on John Brim's 'You Got Me Where You Want Me'. A pearl of a blues! The title track 'Wiggle It' of this volume comes from Crook Junior and is a great blues song reduced to its essence. Another great one on the blues harp Walter Horton, also known as Big Walter or Shakey Horton, may close with 'Jumpin' Blues' under the name Mumbles. The tenth volume in the 'Black Pearls' series once again lives up to the name of the series for more than 100%, just like the nine previously published volumes.
