Het Atomicat label bracht met de vijfdelige serie ‘Phantom Rockers’, waarvan inmiddels reeds 3 volumes verschenen, een indrukwekkend aantal obscure opnames uit. Tussen haakjes binnenkort krijg je hier ook de review van de nog te verschijnen volumes 4 en 5.
In navolging van die serie, concentreert het KokoMojo label zich nu op de ‘Black Phantom Rockers’. Ook deze serie zal 5 volumes tellen. Het principe komt overeen met de ‘Phantom Rockers’ serie. Het enige verschil schuilt in het feit dat deze serie focust op de zwarte artiesten. Artiesten die voor het grote publiek onbekend bleven, soms vreemde podiumnamen aannamen of bekende artiesten die om welke reden dan ook, hun ware identiteit niet prijsgaven en zich hulden in aliassen.
Het eerste volume is nu op de markt en bevat 26 tracks die je al vlug naar meer doen verlangen. Omdat het meestal over onbekende en lokale artiesten gaat, is weinig en vaak geen info rond hen beschikbaar. Niet getreurd echter want de uitmuntende tracks spreken voor zich.
Openen doet het album met ‘You Made A Boo Boo’, een knappe rockende rhythm & blues van Bob and Earl. De namen Bob and Earl doen je zeker denken aan het nummer ‘Harlem Shuffle’ uit begin zestiger jaren. Wel, de Earl op beide opnames is dezelfde artiest, namelijk Earl Nelson. Bob was niet dezelfde op beide opnames. Op ‘You Made A Boo Boo’ hoor je Bob Byrd en niet Bob Relf. Dat zowel Nelson als Byrd uit vocale groepen kwamen, is duidelijk te horen aan hun zangkwaliteiten. Pure rock-‘n-roll volgt daarna met ‘Country Boy’ van Billy La Mont. Achter ‘What Am I’ van Big Bob ontdek je krachtige stem van Big Bob Kornegay. Hij nam het nummer op voor Jaro International. In ‘Bip Bop Bip’ van Pretty Boy ontdek je duidelijk de gelijkenis met de prestaties van Little Richard. Wel, hij gaf Don Covay het koosnaampje Pretty Boy. Later hoor je hem nogmaals met het eveneens rockende ‘Rockin’ The Mule’.
Het leuke aan compilaties is dat je obscure songs ontdekt die lang voor je oren verstopt bleven. Dat geldt zeker voor ‘Rock and Roll Jungle’, titeltrack van dit eerste volume. Heerlijke rockabilly van Joe Benson! Nummer dat bovendien opgesmukt wordt met een voortstuwende sax. Een alles verschroeiende sax zet ook ‘Cheating Woman’ van Kansas City Jimmy op de rails. Verbluffend gitaarwerk vormt dan weer de intro van ‘Peg Leg Woman’ van Willie King. De song werd geschreven door Ike Turner en diens band stond ook paraat voor de begeleiding. Bekend is ook Guitar Shorty, hier in ‘Ways Of A Man’, waar Shorty’s gitaarwerk andermaal hemels klinkt.
‘I Got Your Boogie’ zet Sarah ‘Fatwoman’ Dean in op een soulvolle manier, waarna het nummer zich ontpopt als een super rhythm & bluesboogie. Voor een tof samengaan van vroege soul en rhythm & blues zorgt Dimples Jackson dan weer in ‘Ring A Ling’.
Blues is vertegenwoordigd door Lonesome Sundown en het gekende ‘Gonna Stick To You Baby’. Sundown nam het nummer op voor Excello en op mondharmonica hoor je Lazy Lester, die ook verbonden was aan Excello. Emon Mickle was een begenadigd bluesgitarist en mondharmonicaspeler. Zijn talent kan je beluisteren op het instrumentale ‘Lonesome Highway’. Mickle nam ook op als Driftin’ Slim en trad vaak op als ‘one man band’. Meer instrumentaal werk komt er nog met ‘The Boogie Twist’ van Cal Valentine & The Texas Rockers
Een fraai staaltje jumpblues serveert Clifford King in ‘Want To Jump With You Baby’.
Het mag duidelijk zijn dat KokoMojo met deze nieuwe serie weer een schot in de roos aflevert. Naast de fantastische muziek die je hier krijgt, wordt de cd verpakt in een enorm originele driedelige openklapbare digipack, gesierd met knappe illustraties van Guitar Shorty, Lonesome Sundown en Big Bob.
Wij kijken alvast reikhalzend uit naar de nog te verschijnen volumes.

With the five-part series ‘Phantom Rockers’, of which 3 volumes have already been released, the Atomicat label released an impressive number of obscure recordings. Incidentally, you will also soon find the review of the upcoming volumes 4 and 5 here.
Following that series, the KokoMojo label is now focusing on the ‘Black Phantom Rockers’. This series will also consist of 5 volumes. The principle is similar to the ‘Phantom Rockers’ series. The only difference lies in the fact that this series focuses on black artists. Artists who remained unknown to the general public, sometimes adopted strange stage names, or well-known artists who, for whatever reason, did not reveal their true identity and hid behind aliases.
The first volume is now on the market and contains 26 tracks that will quickly leave you wanting more. Because it mostly concerns unknown and local artists, little and often no information is available about them. However, do not despair, as the excellent tracks speak for themselves. The album opens with ‘You Made A Boo Boo’, a fine rocking rhythm & blues by Bob and Earl. The names Bob and Earl certainly make you think of the song ‘Harlem Shuffle’ from the early sixties. Well, the Earl on both recordings is the same artist, namely Earl Nelson. Bob was not the same on both recordings. On ‘You Made A Boo Boo’, you hear Bob Byrd and not Bob Relf. That both Nelson and Byrd came from vocal groups is clearly audible in their vocal qualities. Pure rock ‘n’ roll follows with ‘Country Boy’ by Billy La Mont. Behind ‘What Am I’ by Big Bob, you discover the powerful voice of Big Bob Kornegay. He recorded the song for Jaro International. In ‘Bip Bop Bip’ by Pretty Boy, you clearly discover the similarity to Little Richard’s performance. Well, he gave Don Covay the nickname Pretty Boy. Later, you hear him again with the equally rocking ‘Rockin’ The Mule’.
The fun thing about compilations is that you discover obscure songs that have long been hidden from your ears. That certainly applies to ‘Rock and Roll Jungle’, the title track of this first volume. Wonderful rockabilly by Joe Benson! A track that is also embellished with a driving sax. An all-scorching sax also sets ‘Cheating Woman’ by Kansas City Jimmy on the rails. Stunning guitar work forms the intro to ‘Peg Leg Woman’ by Willie King. The song was written by Ike Turner, and his band was also on hand for the accompaniment. Guitar Shorty is also well-known, here in ‘Ways Of A Man’, where Shorty’s guitar work sounds heavenly once again.
‘I Got Your Boogie’ is introduced by Sarah ‘Fatwoman’ Dean in a soulful manner, after which the song unfolds into a superb rhythm & blues boogie. Dimples Jackson then provides a cool blend of early soul and rhythm & blues in ‘Ring A Ling’. Blues is represented by Lonesome Sundown and the well-known ‘Gonna Stick To You Baby’. Sundown recorded the song for Excello, and on harmonica you hear Lazy Lester, who was also associated with Excello. Emon Mickle was a gifted blues guitarist and harmonica player. You can hear his talent on the instrumental ‘Lonesome Highway’. Mickle also recorded as Driftin’ Slim and often performed as a one-man band. More instrumental work follows with ‘The Boogie Twist’ by Cal Valentine & The Texas Rockers. Clifford King serves up a fine example of jump blues in ‘Want To Jump With You Baby’.
It is clear that KokoMojo has hit the mark again with this new series. In addition to the fantastic music you get here, the CD is packaged in a highly original three-part fold-out digipack, adorned with handsome illustrations of Guitar Shorty, Lonesome Sundown, and Big Bob.
