​Net als de ‘Phantom Rockers’ serie, zal ook deze reeks rond de ‘Black Phantom Rockers’ uiteindelijk vijf volumes tellen. Met ‘The Dance’ zitten we aan het tweede volume en we kunnen al meteen zeggen dat dit album weer te ontdekken pareltjes bevat. De titel van dit tweede volume is niet slecht gekozen, want met opener het energieke ‘The Jump’ van Richie Richardson met Charlie Cuevas And The Jaguars zal de dansvloer in geen mum van tijd overbevolkt zijn. Een persoonlijke favoriet komt er met Lord Tennyson en meteen de titeltrack. ‘The Dance’ is een heerlijke rockende rhythm & blues met een saxriff die de song nog extra glans bezorgt. Downhome blues is de basis van ‘Goin’ Back To Orleans’ van Jesse and Buzzy. Wat het nummer speciaal maakt is de toevoeging van de bluesharp. In ‘Comin’ Around The Mountain’ van Johnny Two-Voices voegen de backing vocals dan weer knappe gospel toe aan de rhythm & blues. Voor een streepje New Orleans blues kan je terecht bij het met piano ingezette ‘Love Money’ van The Jokers Orchestra met zang van Johnson Boudreaux. Geen wonder want Boudreaux kwam uit Louisiana en met ‘Love Money’ heb je meteen zijn bekendste nummer. Little Papa Joe, hier present met ‘Looking For My Baby’ was eigenlijk Jody Williams. Jody gebruikte deze alias voor zijn eerste solo-opname. Een obscuur gebleven artiest was Norman Sands. Hier hoor je hem samen met de vocale groep The Valiants op het zeldzame en op enkele kreten na, hoofdzakelijk instrumentale ‘Don’t Wanna Leave The Congo’. Datzelfde geldt voor ‘Work With It’ van Jesse Pipkin and Band. Op de countryblues ‘Little City Woman’ van Big Bill & His Guitar, is de phantom muzikant niemand minder dan Big Bill Broonzy.
Veel opnames maakte het duo Henry and Mamie niet. Maar die ze maakten, overtuigden zonder meer. Ervaar het zelf tijdens het vrolijke ‘Two Big Feet’, de b zijde van hun meest bekende song, ‘Soap Suds’. De phantom rocker op ‘Strollie Bun’ van The Blond Bomber, is niemand minder dan rockabillypionier Ronnie Dawson. Een andere phantom rocker die zich voor de opname van ‘Biscuit Baking Mama’ liet registreren als Big Ed and His Combo, was Eddie ‘Guitar’ Burns. Knap is tevens ‘Rock And Roll Baby’ van Mercy Baby. Uitvoering die wat doet denken aan Big Joe Turner.
Voor heerlijk vocaal werk bieden Tippie & The Clovermen de oplossing met ‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’. Bij het horen van pompende pianoklanken denk je aan Little Richard of Esquerita. Op ‘Gettin’ Plenty Lovin’’ is het Esquerita, die model zou staan voor Richard. Deze laatste zou het meeste succes oogsten, alhoewel Esquerita de muzikale weg voor hem plaveide. Op een toffe bluesmelodie etaleert Blue Charlie het grotendeels gesproken ‘I’m Gonna Kill That Hen’. Het imponerend gitaarwerk komt van Blue Charlie zelf, oftewel Charles Morris.
Bekend, misschien eerder onder de echte liefhebbes, is het sublieme ‘Love Blood Hound’ van K.C. Mojo Watson. Little Jessie Smith zingt op ‘My Baby Has Gone’ de longen uit haar lijf. Jessie Smith zou later deel uitmaken van de Ikettes, achtergrondzangeressen bij Ike and Tina Turner. De phantom rocker op ‘Say You’ll Be Mine’ van The Equadors, is Chuck Berry en dat hoor je overduidelijk aan de gitaarpartij.
We begonnen met een dans en eindigen er ook mee. Afsluiter is namelijk ‘Du De Squat’ van Little Luther.
Het tweede volume in de serie ‘Black Phantom Rockers’ zorgde andermaal voor markante opnames.
In juni mag je het derde volume, dat als titel ‘Hallelujah Rock And Roll’ meekreeg, verwachten. Fans weten dat je onze site hiervoor best regelmatig raadpleegt.

​​Just like the ‘Phantom Rockers’ series, this series centered around the ‘Black Phantom Rockers’ will eventually comprise five volumes. With ‘The Dance’, we have reached the second volume, and we can already say that this album contains gems waiting to be discovered. The title of this second volume is well chosen, as the energetic opener ‘The Jump’ by Richie Richardson with Charlie Cuevas And The Jaguars will ensure the dance floor is overcrowded in no time. A personal favorite comes with Lord Tennyson, and rightly so, the title track. ‘The Dance’ is a delightful rocking rhythm & blues with a sax riff that gives the song extra shine. Downhome blues forms the basis of ‘Goin’ Back To Orleans’ by Jesse and Buzzy. What makes the track special is the addition of the blues harp. In ‘Comin’ Around The Mountain’ by Johnny Two-Voices, the backing vocals add clever gospel to the rhythm & blues. For a touch of New Orleans blues, you can turn to The Jokers Orchestra’s piano-driven ‘Love Money’, featuring vocals by Johnson Boudreaux. No wonder, as Boudreaux hailed from Louisiana, and ‘Love Money’ is immediately his most famous song. Little Papa Joe, present here with ‘Looking For My Baby’, was actually Jody Williams. Jody used this alias for his first solo recording. Norman Sands was an artist who remained obscure. Here you hear him together with the vocal group The Valiants on the rare and, apart from a few shouts, mainly instrumental ‘Don’t Wanna Leave The Congo’. The same applies to ‘Work With It’ by Jesse Pipkin and Band. On the country blues ‘Little City Woman’ by Big Bill & His Guitar, the phantom musician is none other than Big Bill Broonzy.
The duo Henry and Mamie did not make many recordings. But those they did make were undeniably convincing. Experience it for yourself during the cheerful ‘Two Big Feet’, the B-side of their most famous song, ‘Soap Suds’. The phantom rocker on ‘Strollie Bun’ by The Blond Bomber is none other than rockabilly pioneer Ronnie Dawson. Another phantom rocker who registered as Big Ed and His Combo for the recording of ‘Biscuit Baking Mama’ was Eddie ‘Guitar’ Burns. Also impressive is ‘Rock And Roll Baby’ by Mercy Baby, a performance that is somewhat reminiscent of Big Joe Turner.
For delightful vocal work, Tippie & The Clovermen offer the solution with ‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’. Hearing pumping piano sounds makes you think of Little Richard or Esquerita. On ‘Gettin’ Plenty Lovin’’, it is Esquerita who is said to have served as the model for Richard. The latter would achieve the most success, although Esquerita paved the musical way for him. Over a cool blues melody, Blue Charlie showcases the largely spoken ‘I’m Gonna Kill That Hen’. The impressive guitar work comes from Blue Charlie himself, aka Charles Morris.
Well-known, perhaps more so among true enthusiasts, is the sublime ‘Love Blood Hound’ by K.C. Mojo Watson. Little Jessie Smith sings her heart out on ‘My Baby Has Gone’. Jessie Smith would later become part of the Ikettes, backing vocalists for Ike and Tina Turner. The phantom rocker on ‘Say You’ll Be Mine’ by The Ecuadors is Chuck Berry, and you can hear that clearly in the guitar part.
We started with a dance and we end with one too. The closing track is ‘Du De Squat’ by Little Luther.
The second volume in the ‘Black Phantom Rockers’ series once again provided striking recordings.
