​Onlangs kreeg u op deze site reeds de reviews van de vierde volumes in de series ‘Stroll-A-Rama’ en ‘Jive-A-Rama’ en nu is het de beurt aan ‘Bop-A-Rama’. Ook hier serveert het Atomicat label je 30 boppin’ tracks. 28 onder hen dateren uit het gouden periode 1953-1963, aangevuld met 2 tracks uit de Rhythm Bomb Records archieven. Zet je schrap voor energieke rockabilly, ritmische countryrockers en strakke blues. Tony and Jackie Lamie with The Swing Kings mogen verrassend het startschot geven met ‘Sunset Blues’, een song die zowel rockabilly, country als blues in zich heeft. De volgende die aan bod komt, is al dadelijk een bekende, namelijk Moon Mullican. Door de fiddle ademt ‘Jenny Lee’ zowel hillbilly als country uit. Bij de begeleiders treffen we gitaristen Hank Garland en Grady Martin aan. Voor schitterend gitaarwerk keert Martin later nog terug op het boppende ‘Be Bop Baby’ van Autry Inman. Grady was een veelgevraagd studiomuzikant, want ook op Johnny Bond’s countryachtige ‘All I Can Do’ zorgt hij voor een sublieme sound op de zes snaren. Knap gitaarwerk siert ook ‘You Can Have My Love’ van Judy Capps en Pat Kingary. Een toffe rock-‘n-rollsong komt er met ‘It Ain’t Right’ van Gordon Terry, die met The Jordanaires heerlijke backings in huis haalt. Mojo Buford raakte bekend als mondharmonicaspeler in de band van Muddy Waters. Hier hoor je hem als op de bluesharp aan het werk in het instrumentale ‘Can’t Sit Down’ van de Voodoo Men. Buford heeft ook een link met het volgende nummer, het bekende ‘Hold Me In Your Arms’ van die andere bluesharper James Cotton. Toen Cotton in 1967 de band van Muddy Waters verliet, keerde Buford terug om hem te vervangen. Cotton laat hier de mondharmonica evenwel in het doosje zitten en concentreert zich op de zang. Let ook de knappe gitaar van Pat Hare. Een topper van een rockabillynummer presenteren Henry Wilson with The Bluenotes in ‘Are You Ready’. Curley Jim was van een oorsprong een countryzanger. Dat rock-‘n-roll ook in zijn genen zit, bewijst hij samen The Billey Rocks op ‘Rock And Roll Itch’. Voor meer opzwepende rock zorgt Sonny Hall met ‘My Big Fat Baby’, net als overigens Ricky and The Stompers met ‘The Wild One’. Rock-‘n-roll in zijn aller puurste vorm komt er later nog met Billy Smith en ‘Tell Me Baby’. Gitarist Joe Maphis was Larry Collins mentor en Joe hoor je hier ook. Larry vormde samen met zijn zus Lorrie The Collins Kids. Jeugdige rock van de bovenste plank is hier het resultaat van en te horen via ‘Hoy Hoy’. ‘Great old school country’ krijg je daarna met ‘Wishin’ I Was Kissin’ You’ van Leon Merritt. Vocalist en drummer Willie Nix werkte met blueslegendes als Earl Hooker, Walter Horton en Joe Hill Louis. Vanzelfsprekend valt zijn ‘Just Can’t Stay’ ook bij de blues onder te brengen. Meer blues volgt reeds onmiddellijk daarna met grootmeester Lightnin’ Slim in ‘Have Your Way’. Op de mondharmonica hoor je super smoelschuiver Lazy Lester. De countryblues ‘Step It Up And Go’ ken je zeker van Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee. In een compleet ander arrangement, met mooie backing vocals van The Jack Halloran Singers presenteert Mac Wiseman hier het nummer. Nederland liet zich bij monde van Peter Koelewijn ook horen in de gouden jaren van de rock-‘n-roll, en dan nog wel in het Nederlands. Geen ‘Kom Van Dat Dak Af’ hier, maar het wel het evenwaardige ‘De Hele Stad Is Gek En Dol’. Een mooie steelgitaar kenmerkt dan weer de mix van hillbilly en country in ‘Baby I’ll Soon Be Gone’ van de voor velen onbekende Lattie Moore.
Tracks 29 en 30 zijn voorbehouden voor de nummers uit de archieven van Rhythm Bomb Records. Allereerst mag het Britse Rhythm River Trio aantreden met de zevende take van ‘I Can’t Go’. Nummer dat hier voor het eerst te beluisteren is. Afsluiten mogen de Australische Chrome Daddies met ‘It Must Be Somenthing’. De uitgebrachte versie tref je aan op hun album ‘Gear Up Daddy’.
Frontman van de Daddies is Doug Wilshire. Op het eerder gerecenseerde vierde volume van ‘Jive-A-Rama’ hoor je hem onder eigen naam nog aan het werk in ‘Five Star Boogie’.
Het is duidelijk dat het Atomicat team bij het samenstellen van compilaties niet over ‘één nacht ijs gaat’. Teleurstellen doen deze series nooit, wel……………verlangen naar meer!

Recently you already received the reviews of the fourth volumes in the series ‘Stroll-A-Rama’ and ‘Jive-A-Rama’ on this site and now it is the turn of ‘Bop-A-Rama’. Brace yourself for energetic rockabilly, rhythmic country rockers and tight blues. Tony and Jackie Lamie with The Swing Kings may surprisingly give the starting shot with ‘Sunset Blues’, a song that has rockabilly, country and blues in it. The next one to be discussed is a well-known one, namely Moon Mullican. The fiddle breathes both hillbilly and country in ‘Jenny Lee’. Among the accompanists we find guitarists Hank Garland and Grady Martin. Martin returns later for brilliant guitar work on the bopping ‘Be Bop Baby’ by Autry Inman. Grady was a much sought-after studio musician, because he also provides a sublime sound on the six strings on Johnny Bond’s country-like ‘All I Can Do’. Clever guitar work also adorns ‘You Can Have My Love’ by Judy Capps and Pat Kingary. A cool rock-‘n-roll song comes with ‘It Ain’t Right’ by Gordon Terry, who brings in wonderful backing vocals with The Jordanaires. Mojo Buford became known as a harmonica player in Muddy Waters’ band. Here you can hear him at work on the blues harp in the instrumental ‘Can’t Sit Down’ by the Voodoo Men. Buford also has a link with the next number, the well-known ‘Hold Me In Your Arms’ by that other blues harper James Cotton. When Cotton left Muddy Waters’ band in 1967, Buford returned to replace him. Cotton leaves the harmonica in the box here and concentrates on the vocals. Also note the beautiful guitar of Pat Hare. Henry Wilson with The Bluenotes present a top rockabilly number in ‘Are You Ready’. Curley Jim was originally a country singer. That rock-‘n-roll is also in his genes, he proves with The Billey Rocks on ‘Rock And Roll Itch’. Sonny Hall also provides more rousing rock with ‘My Big Fat Baby’, as does Ricky and The Stompers with ‘The Wild One’. Rock-‘n-roll in its purest form comes later with Billy Smith and ‘Tell Me Baby’. Guitarist Joe Maphis was Larry Collins mentor and Joe can also be heard here. Larry formed The Collins Kids together with his sister Lorrie. Youthful rock of the highest order is the result here and can be heard on ‘Hoy Hoy’. ‘Great old school country’ is next with ‘Wishin’ I Was Kissin’ You’ by Leon Merritt. Vocalist and drummer Willie Nix worked with blues legends like Earl Hooker, Walter Horton and Joe Hill Louis. Of course his ‘Just Can’t Stay’ can also be classified as blues. More blues follows immediately afterwards with grandmaster Lightnin’ Slim in ‘Have Your Way’. On the harmonica you hear super face slider Lazy Lester. You certainly know the country blues ‘Step It Up And Go’ from Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee. In a completely different arrangement, with beautiful backing vocals by The Jack Halloran Singers, Mac Wiseman presents the song here. The Netherlands also made itself heard through Peter Koelewijn in the golden years of rock-‘n-roll, and….. in Dutch. No ‘Kom Van Dat Dak Af’ here, but the equal ‘De Hele Stad Is Gek En Dol’. A beautiful steel guitar characterizes the mix of hillbilly and country in ‘Baby I’ll Soon Be Gone’ by Lattie Moore. Unfortunately unknown to many!
Tracks 29 and 30 are reserved for the songs from the archives of Rhythm Bomb Records. First up, the British Rhythm River Trio may perform with the seventh take of ‘I Can’t Go’. A song that can be heard here for the first time. The Australian Chrome Daddies may close with ‘It Must Be Something’. The released version can be found on their album ‘Gear Up Daddy’.

It is clear that the Atomicat team does not ‘take any chances’ when compiling albums. These series never disappoint, but……….. they do leave you wanting more!
