​Het leuke aan series zoals ‘Boss Black Instrumentals’ is dat je een gedetailleerd beeld krijg van een bepaald genre, in dit geval de instrumentale rhythm & blues. De kleppers in het genre, zoals bijvoorbeeld ‘Hide Away’ van Freddy King, zijn alom bekend, maar vele instrumentale nummers binnen de rhythm & blues bleven onder de radar. Nummers van bekende artiesten, maar ook van artiesten die niet konden doordringen en vaak tevreden moesten zijn met lokaal succes. Die mix van bekend, minder bekend, en vaak obscuur talent bevolkt ook het vijfde volume in deze serie. Volume dat als titel ‘Ginger Snap’ kreeg, ontleend aan het gelijknamige nummer van The Exotics. Billy And The King Bees mogen het startschot geven met ‘Susie Q’, origineel van swamprocker Dale Hawkins, dat het in een instrumentale versie enorm goed doet. Buddy Lucas was een Amerikaanse saxofonist, die eigenlijk meer bekendheid verwierf door zijn prestaties op de mondharmonica. Daarvan kan je getuige zijn op de slowblues ‘Show Down’. Mondharmonica is ook het hoofdinstrument op het energieke ‘Braggin’’ van The Temps. Een andere getalenteerde mondharmonicaspeler was Whispering Smith. Hij werkte samen met o.a. Lightnin’ Slim en Silas Hogan. Dat hij in staat was tot grootse dingen op het kleine instrument, hoor je op ‘Harmonica Twist’. Meer harmonica valt nog te ontdekken op ‘Slipping In’ van Lee Walker, alsook op ‘Red River Shuffle’ van Haze Hart.
Pianist Jimmy McCracklin was vooral actief in de West Coast blues en jumpblues. Vooral deze laatste stijl komt tot uiting in ‘Trottin’’. Het palmares van saxofonist / trompettist Herb Hardesty is indrukwekkend. Niet alleen door zijn samenwerking met Fats Domino, maar ook met de orkesten van Duke Ellington en Count Basie. Op ‘The Chicken Twist’ hoor je Herb niet op één van zijn favoriete blaasinstrumenten, maar hij begon zijn muzikale carrière wel als muzikant op de double bass…..! Surf op mondharmonica klinkt je misschien vreemd in de oren. Maar het kan, luister maar eens naar ‘Honky’ van The Ho-Dads. Enorm toffe songs met de sax in de hoofdrol zijn zeker ‘In The Dog House’ van The Mack Johnson Combo en het met een partysfeer overgoten ‘Rooty Tooty’ van Lionel Torrance. Daar mag je zeker ook het meer dan 5 minuten durende ‘How About It’ van Big Bo Thomas aan toevoegen. Later komt Big Bo nog terug, ditmaal samen zijn Arrows voor ‘Big Bo’s Twist’.
Waar kan je voor een portie junglebeat beter terecht dan bij de meester zelf, natuurlijk Bo Diddley met ‘The Twister’. Googie Rene was een bekende Amerikaanse muzikant, orkestleider en songschrijver. Aan de piano hoor je hem op ‘Rowdy Dowdy’. Bluesgitarist en zanger Jimmy Reed zorgde voor heel wat inmiddels klassieke bluesnummers. Dat hij ook een virtuoos was op de mondharmonica hoor je op ‘Boogie In The Dark’. Een andere legendarische artiest is zonder twijfel B.B. King, hier present op ‘Don’t Touch’ in zijn herkenbare gitaarstijl.
Het vijfde volume in de ‘Boss Black Instrumentals’ serie staat weer bol van energieke en dansbare rhythm & blues instrumentaal werk. Het zijn series als deze, waarvan je niet alleen kan genieten, maar die je ook op ontdekking sturen.

The great thing about series like ‘Boss Black Instrumentals’ is that you get a detailed picture of a certain genre, in this case instrumental rhythm & blues. The big names in the genre, such as ‘Hide Away’ by Freddy King, are well-known, but many instrumental numbers within rhythm & blues remained under the radar. Numbers by famous artists, but also by artists who often had to be satisfied with local success. This mix of well-known, lesser-known, and often obscure talent also populates the fifth volume in this series. Volume that was given the title ‘Ginger Snap’, borrowed from the song of the same name by The Exotics. Billy And The King Bees may give the starting signal with ‘Susie Q’, originally by swamp rocker Dale Hawkins, which does very well in an instrumental version. Buddy Lucas was an American saxophonist, who actually gained more fame through his performances on the harmonica. You can witness this on the slow blues ‘Show Down’. Harmonica is also the main instrument on the energetic ‘Braggin’’ by The Temps. Another talented harmonica player was Whispering Smith. He worked with Lightnin’ Slim and Silas Hogan, among others. That he was capable of great things on the small instrument, you can heir on ‘Harmonica Twist’. More harmonica can be discovered on ‘Slipping In’ by Lee Walker, as well as on ‘Red River Shuffle’ by Haze Hart. Pianist Jimmy McCracklin was mainly active in West Coast blues and jump blues. Really cool songs with the sax in the lead role are certainly ‘In The Dog House’ by The Mack Johnson Combo and the party-infused ‘Rooty Tooty’ by Lionel Torrance. You can certainly add the more than 5-minute long ‘How About It’ by Big Bo Thomas to that. Big Bo will return later, this time together with his Arrows for ‘Big Bo’s Twist’. Where better to go for a portion of jungle beat than with the master himself, of course Bo Diddley with ‘The Twister’. Googie Rene was a well-known American musician, orchestra leader and songwriter. You can hear him on the piano on ‘Rowdy Dowdy’. Blues guitarist and singer Jimmy Reed provided many now classic blues numbers. That he was also a virtuoso on the harmonica can be heard on ‘Boogie In The Dark’. Another legendary artist is without a doubt B.B. King, here present on ‘Don’t Touch’ in his recognizable guitar style.
The fifth volume in the ‘Boss Black Instrumentals’ series is again full of energetic and danceable rhythm & blues instrumental work. It is series like this that you can not only enjoy, but that also send you on a discovery.
