​Met de nieuwste release in de ‘Destination’ serie meren we aan in de haven van Hong Kong, dat ooit een Britse kroonkolonie was. ‘Destination Hong Kong’ baadt vanzelfsprekend in een Oosterse sfeer. En om in de Oosterse levensstijl en mythes te blijven, benutten de hier gebundelde tracks zich van mysterieuze titels als ‘Oriental Hop’, ‘Chinese Boogie’, ‘Shangied’, ‘Hot Sake’, Ching Ching Wong’ en ‘Hong Kong Blues’. Exotische titels die de nieuwsgierigheid alvast doen boosten. De 26 tracks werden allen opgenomen in de vijftiger en begin zestiger jaren toen het reizen naar het Verre Oosten nog niet voor iedereen toegankelijk was. Vaak bleef het dan ook bij dromen over het land van de rijzende zon, zijn cultuur, levensstijl, gerechten, drank en noem maar op. Wel, dromen kan je ook met deze compilatie van Bear Family Records. Mede door de miljoenen Chinese immigranten die in Amerika een nieuw leven opbouwden, kropen ook Chinese invloeden in de songs van Amerikaanse artiesten. Niet alleen trouwens in de titels maar ook de Chinese gong en citer zorgden voor een Oosters sfeertje. Van die sfeer kan je meteen al proeven in het instrumentale ‘Bop Suey’ van het orkest van Jack Hale. Helemaal in die sfeer kom je ongetwijfeld met het instrumentale ‘Oo-Clazy!’ van The Dazzlers dat ‘op en top’ Oosters klinkt. Meer instrumentaal werk komt er met Danny Steel en Hank Farrell and his Rhythm Boys in ‘Chinese Twist’, dat ook heel wat surf in zich heeft. Instrumentaal en heel Oosters klinkt ook ‘Hot Sake’ van Ken Nordine & His Kinsmen, inclusief een tof orgeltje. Leuk, en let vooral op het achtergrondkoortje is ook het instrumentale ‘Ah, So’ van The Highlights. Voor een rocker op zijn Oosters zorgt even later Melvin Smith met ‘Zaki Sue’. Niet verwonderlijk dat er op deze compilatie meerder instrumentale tracks voorkomen. Immers via een instrumentaal nummer is het scheppen van een Oosterse sfeer, heel wat ingrijpender. Dat moeten ook The Calenders gedacht hebben toen ze ‘Hong Kong’ opnamen, net als Jackie Lee met ‘Hong Kong’ en The Instrumentals in ‘Chop Suey Rock’.  Rocken kan je overigens ook op ‘Hong Kong Jelly Wong’ van The Royaltones, inclusief een aanstekelijke sax. Doo-wop met een Chinese touch serveren The Glad Rags in ‘My China Doll’. Meer doo-wop komt er met ‘Ling, Ting, Tong’ van The Five Keys, alsook met The Hy-Tones en hun ‘Chinese Boogie’. In de zestiger jaren was de dansgekte in de US enorm. Nieuwe dansen werden bijna aan de lopende band gecreëerd. Bernie Turner and The Armorettes konden niet achterblijven en schiepen ‘Ching Ching Wong’. Misschien is je het opgevallen hoe vaak het woord ‘Wong’ gebruikt wordt. De reden is simpel….in het Verre Oosten is Wong één van de meest voorkomende familienamen. Wat bluesy klinkt eerder ‘My Chinatown Girl’ van Leroy Washington. Liever een snuifje country? Dan staat Webb Pierce voor je klaar met ‘Shangied’. Jimmy Bryant was een meester op zijn Telecaster. Dat laat hij nog eens vol overtuiging horen op ‘Ha-So’. ‘Hong Kong’ van The Quinns is dan weer een super mooie mix van rhythm & blues en doo-wop. ‘Fujiyama Mama’ ken je ongetwijfeld van Wanda Jackson. Hier krijg je een meer rhythm & bluesversie door Annisteen Allen, die de song enkele jaren voor Jackson opnam. Jerry Lee Lewis, de killer, mag het rijtje sluiten met het toepasselijke ‘Hong Kong Blues’.

Als thematisch album kan deze ‘Destination Hong Kong’ tellen. 26 tracks die je zonder uitzondering van de Oosterse sfeer laten proeven. Mooie uitgave!

With the latest release in the ‘Destination’ series we dock in the harbour of Hong Kong, which was once a British Crown Colony. ‘Destination Hong Kong’ naturally bathes in an oriental atmosphere. And to stay in the oriental lifestyle and myths, the tracks bundled here make use of mysterious titles such as ‘Oriental Hop’, ‘Chinese Boogie’, ‘Shangied’, ‘Hot Sake’, Ching Ching Wong’ and ‘Hong Kong Blues’. Exotic titles that already boost the curiosity. The 26 tracks were all recorded in the fifties and early sixties when travelling to the Far East was not yet accessible to everyone. Often it remained a dream about the land of the rising sun, its culture, lifestyle, dishes, drinks and so on. Well, you can also dream with this compilation from Bear Family Records. Partly due to the millions of Chinese immigrants who built a new life in America, Chinese influences also crept into the songs of American artists. Not only in the titles, but also the Chinese gong and zither provided an oriental atmosphere. You can immediately taste that atmosphere in the instrumental ‘Bop Suey’ by Jack Hale’s orchestra. You will undoubtedly get completely in that atmosphere with the instrumental ‘Oo-Clazy!’ by The Dazzlers, which sounds ‘through and through’ oriental. More instrumental work comes with Danny Steel and Hank Farrell and his Rhythm Boys in ‘Chinese Twist’, which also has a lot of surf in it. ‘Hot Sake’ by Ken Nordine & His Kinsmen also sounds instrumental and very oriental, including a cool organ. Nice, and pay special attention to the background choir, is also the instrumental ‘Ah, So’ by The Highlights. A little later, Melvin Smith provides an oriental rocker with ‘Zaki Sue’. It is not surprising that there are several instrumental tracks on this compilation. After all, creating an oriental atmosphere via an instrumental number is much more drastic. The Calendars must have thought the same when they recorded ‘Hong Kong’, just like Jackie Lee with ‘Hong Kong’ and The Instrumentals in ‘Chop Suey Rock’. Incidentally, you can also rock to ‘Hong Kong Jelly Wong’ by The Royaltones, including a catchy sax. Doo-wop with a Chinese touch is served by The Glad Rags in ‘My China Doll’. More doo-wop comes with ‘Ling, Ting, Tong’ by The Five Keys, as well as with The Hy-Tones and their ‘Chinese Boogie’. In the sixties, the dance craze in the US was enormous. New dances were created almost on an assembly line. Bernie Turner and The Armorettes could not stay behind and created ‘Ching Ching Wong’. You may have noticed how often the word ‘Wong’ is used. The reason is simple….in the Far East, Wong is one of the most common family names. A bit bluesy sounds ‘My Chinatown Girl’ by Leroy Washington. Prefer a pinch of country? Then Webb Pierce is ready for you with ‘Shangied’. Jimmy Bryant was a master on his Telecaster. He shows that again with conviction on ‘Ha-So’. ‘Hong Kong’ by The Quinns is a super nice mix of rhythm & blues and doo-wop. You undoubtedly know ‘Fujiyama Mama’ from Wanda Jackson. Here you get a more rhythm & blues version by Annisteen Allen, who recorded the song a few years before Jackson. Jerry Lee Lewis, the killer, may close the list with the appropriate ‘Hong Kong Blues’.
