​Wanneer de traditionele uitvoeringen van kerstliedjes je niet echt kunnen bekoren, dan zijn er nog steeds de rond dit thema op de markt gebrachte albums die focussen op de meest diverse muziekgenres. Elk jaar komen er wel een aantal van deze albums op de markt. Het Duitse Bear Family Records is wel heel erg vroeg van de partij, want zij brengen nu reeds ‘Get Ready For A Groovy And Bluesy Christmas’ uit. 28 tracks die garant staan voor een prima eindejaarsgevoel. Zoals de titel reeds aangeeft, zijn alle songs in de genres authentieke blues en rhythm & blues onder te brengen. Om meteen in de juiste ‘mood’ te komen, serveert The Jackson Trio met ‘Jingle Bell Hop’ een feestelijke instrumental. Voor een jazzy Hammond instrumentale song tekent later Bill Doggett in ‘Winter Wondeland’.
‘Close harmony’ geeft de kerstperiode wat extra cachet. Daar zorgen meerdere tracks voor. De eerste komt van de vocale groep The Moonglows met het op rhythm & blues gemodelleerde ‘Hey Santa Claus’. In dit genre mochten zeker The Drifters niet ontbreken. Met leadzanger Clyde McPhatter hoor je ze hier in een knappe bluesy bewerking van de klassieker ‘White Christmas’. Meer mooie samenzang is ook te vinden bij The Voices. Zij treden aan met ‘Santa Claus Baby’ en ‘Santa Claus Boogie’. In dat genre kan je ook The Marcels plaatsen. Op ‘Merry Twist-Mas’ kan je gerust enkele danspasjes uitvoeren. ‘Christmas In Heaven’ van Billy Ward and His Dominoes is eveneens een prachtig staaltje van hoe stemmen perfect blenden.
Een fraaie slowblues presenteert Moose Jackson in het emotionele ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’. Ook Hank Ballard & The Midnighters begeven zich op het pad van de slowblues in ‘Christmas Time For Everybody But Me’. Dat doet ook Jesse Belvin met succes tijdens ‘I Want You With Me Xmas’. ‘Hello Santa Claus’ is dan weer een sublieme pianoblues van Cecil Gant. Een andere legendarische bluespianist was Charles Brown. ‘Please Come Home For Christmas’ is dan ook een pareltje zonder meer.
Ray Agee maakte ooit deel uit van een gospelgroep. Die invloed, maar ook een flinke dosis keigoede soul klinken door in ‘Merry Christmas My Love’. Voor jumpblues van het beste soort, kan je steeds terecht bij Big Joe Turner. Hier hoor je hem met zijn orkest tijdens ‘Christmas Date Boogie’. Meer richting rhythm & blues dirigeert B.B. King zijn ‘Christmas Celebration’. B.B vormde samen met Albert King en Freddy King de 3 grote Kings binnen de blues. Freddy is op deze compilatie ook van de partij met ‘I Hear Jingle Bells’. Andere bluesgrootheden die aanwezig zijn, zijn mondharmonicagigant Sonny Boy Williamson en gitarist Lightnin’ Hopkins, respectievelijk met ‘Sonny Boy’s Christmas Blues’ en ‘Santa’. Een authentieke downhome blues komt er met ‘Christmas Blues’ van Washboard Pete.
Lonnie Hewitt speelde jazz, wat nog steeds met mondjesmaat doorklinkt in ‘You’ve Been A Bad Little Girl’. Ietwat jazzy klinkt ook ‘May Every Day Be Christmas’ van Louis Jordan.
Afsluiten is voorbehouden aan de grote Big Maybelle. Samen met het orkest van Ernie Wilkins brengt ze een zalige versie van ‘White Christmas’.

To get you in the right ‘mood’ right away, The Jackson Trio serves up a festive instrumental with ‘Jingle Bell Hop’. Bill Doggett later signs for a jazzy Hammond instrumental song in ‘Winter Wondeland’.

Moose Jackson presents a beautiful slow blues in the emotional ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’. Hank Ballard & The Midnighters also venture into the slow blues in ‘Christmas Time For Everybody But Me’. Jesse Belvin also does this successfully during ‘I Want You With Me Xmas’. ‘Hello Santa Claus’ is a sublime piano blues by Cecil Gant. Another legendary blues pianist was Charles Brown. ‘Please Come Home For Christmas’ is a gem without a doubt.
Ray Agee was once part of a gospel group. That influence, but also a good dose of really good soul, can be heard in ‘Merry Christmas My Love’. For jump blues of the best kind, you can always go to Big Joe Turner. Here you can hear him with his orchestra during ‘Christmas Date Boogie’. More in the direction of rhythm & blues, B.B. King conducts his ‘Christmas Celebration’. B.B. formed the 3 great Kings of the blues together with Albert King and Freddy King. Freddy is also present on this compilation with ‘I Hear Jingle Bells’. Other blues greats who are present are harmonica giant Sonny Boy Williamson and guitarist Lightnin’ Hopkins, with ‘Sonny Boy’s Christmas Blues’ and ‘Santa’ respectively. An authentic downhome blues comes with ‘Christmas Blues’ by Washboard Pete. Lonnie Hewitt played jazz, which still resonates in small doses in ‘You’ve Been A Bad Little Girl’. ‘May Every Day Be Christmas’ by Louis Jordan also sounds somewhat jazzy.
Closing is reserved for the great Big Maybelle. Together with the orchestra of Ernie Wilkins she brings a wonderful version of ‘White Christmas’.
