​Met ‘Daddy Cool’, genoemd naar de song van de vocale groep The Rays, zit de ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ serie reeds aan het zesde release. Traditiegetrouw stammen de 28 tracks uit de helft van de vorige eeuw en meer bepaald uit de periode 1951-1961. Fans van deze serie, waaronder ondergetekende’ weten wat ze andermaal kunnen verwachten, namelijk het allerbeste op gebied van rhythm & blues en doo-wop. Starten doen we deze keer op een heel originele manier. Verantwoordelijken hiervoor zijn Big Boy Myles and The Shaw-Wees. Met de rockende rhythm & blues ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’ lieten zij zich duidelijk inspireren door het rijmende kinderliedje. Don Covay maakte ooit deel uit van The Little Richard Revue. Diens invloed is te horen op ‘Rockin’ The Mule (Back In Kansas)’ dat Don opnam onder het pseudoniem Pretty Boy. Don wordt gevolgd door heerlijke doo-wop van The Four Tunes en het grappige ‘Three Little Chickens’.  In dat genre situeren zich ook Cornell Gunter and The Flairs, hier aanwezig met de rockende rhythm & blues ‘She Loves To Rock’. Mooie samenzang is ook het handelsmerk van Shirley Gunter and The Queens in ‘Oop Shoop’. Er valt inderdaad heel wat steengoeie doo-wop te vinden op volume 6. Zo zijn ook The Larks van de partij. Zij zetten een prima rockend ‘How Long Must I Wait For You’. Meer in dit genre komt er met The Turks en ook Wilbur Whitfield and The Pleasers schitteren door hun samenzang.
Jackie Wilson behoeft geen verdere introductie. Zijn stem herken je dan ook vanaf de eerste noten van het swingende ‘Am I The Man’. En de iconen volgen mekaar op. Dat geldt zeker voor Smiley Lewis met het overbekende ‘Ain’t Gonna Do It’. Later krijg je ook nog de versie van de vocale groep The Pelicans. ‘Big Ten Inch Records’ is een nummer dat vaak gecoverd werd. Zo kennen we de song o.a. in de versie van de Britse Dana Gillespie. Hier krijg je het origineel van Moose Jackson. Veel gecoverd werd ook ‘Dizzy Miss Lizzy’ een origineel nummer van Larry Williams. Hem hoor je ook op deze compilatie. Nog eentje die in diverse versies ooit opgenomen werd, is ‘You Ain’t Nothin’ But Fine’, bij bluesfans gekend in de versie van The Fabulouis Thunderbirds. Het nummer werd origineel uitgebracht in 1961 door de hier aanwezige Rockin’ Sidney.
‘Spiegeltje aan de wand’ wordt ‘Mirror, Mirror On The Wall’ bij Ernest Tucker. Hij nam het op in 1958 voor het Jubilee label. Voor een rhythm & blues shouter mag je skippen naar Herman Manzy en ‘I’m Your Rockin’ Man’. Heerlijke instrumentale rhythm & blues serveert de legendarische gitarist Lowell Fulson met ‘Jukebox Shuffle’. Niet alleen Don Covay nam met Pretty Boy op onder een pseudoniem. Dat deed ook Dinah Washington. Zij labelde haar ‘Honky Tonky’ als The Queen. Nog niet zo een gekke naam als je haar carrière overschouwt. En wie zouden zich The Lovers noemen? Dat waren Alden Bunn en Anna Lee Sanford, die ook in ware leven geliefden waren. Je hoort hen hier op ‘I Wanna Be Loved’, een knap duet, maar eigenlijk hoor je ook Tarheel Slim en Little Ann.
‘Good Rockin’ Tonight’ is een nummer van Roy Brown die de song in 1947 uitbracht. Een meer bij de zestiger jaren passende versie krijg je van Arthur Prysock. Binnen de rhythm & blues, gospel en soul was Solomon Burke een vaste waarde, die garant stond voor kwaliteit. Heel apart hoor je hem hier op ‘They Always Say’ een song uit 1957, waar hij zelfs een beetje de croonertoer opgaat. Een legende in de blues is ook pianist, zanger en componist Roscoe Gordon. Hij etaleert hier zijn talent op ‘What You Got On Your Mind’.
Kortom, ook ‘Daddy Cool’, het zesde volume in de ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ serie is andermaal een smaakvolle release, waarop o.a. originele uitvoeringen te horen zijn van nummers die je via coverversies kent. Niet alleen een genietbare release maar ook nog een leerzame. Hoe zat dat weer met ‘twee vliegen in één klap’?

Fans of this series, including the undersigned, know what to expect, namely the very best of rhythm & blues and doo-wop. This time we start in a very original way. The people responsible for this are Big Boy Myles and The Shaw-Wees. With the rocking rhythm & blues ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’ they were clearly inspired by the rhyming children's song. Don Covay was once part of The Little Richard Revue. His influence can be heard on ‘Rockin’ The Mule (Back In Kansas)’ that Don recorded under the pseudonym Pretty Boy. Don is followed by wonderful doo-wop by The Four Tunes and the funny ‘Three Little Chickens’. Beautiful harmonies are also the trademark of Shirley Gunter and The Queens in ‘Oop Shoop’. There is indeed a lot of great doo-wop to be found on volume 6. The Larks are also present. They put on a great rocking ‘How Long Must I Wait For You’. More in this genre comes with The Turks and Wilbur Whitfield and The Pleasers also shine with their harmonies.

The legendary guitarist Lowell Fulson serves up delicious instrumental rhythm & blues with ‘Jukebox Shuffle’. Not only Don Covay recorded with Pretty Boy under a pseudonym. Dinah Washington did the same. She labeled her ‘Honky Tonky’ as The Queen. Not such a crazy name when you look at her career. And who would call themselves The Lovers? They were Alden Bunn and Anna Lee Sanford, who were also lovers in real life. You hear them here on ‘I Wanna Be Loved’, a beautiful duet, but you actually also hear Tarheel Slim and Little Ann.

In short, ‘Daddy Cool’, the sixth volume in the ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ series, is once again a tasteful release, on which you can hear original versions of songs you know through cover versions. Not only an enjoyable release but also an educational one. How did that go again with ‘two birds with one stone’?
