​Met ‘Oh Yeah’ zijn we reeds bij het achtste volume in de serie ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ aanbeland. Wat ook nu weer opvalt is dat een groot aantal artiesten, die tijdens de vijftiger en zestiger jaren van vorige eeuw steengoede rhythm & blues opnamen, desondanks niet in de spots raakten. Daarnaast bevat ook deze uitgave andermaal een aantal ronkende namen.
Het album trapt af met Beverly Wright en het swingende ‘Shake Till I’m Shook’, dat wordt gevolgd door het vrolijke en speelse ‘Whoa-Ho (Let’s Get Together)’ van Kitty & Clay. Daarna kondigt zich met Little Richard de eerste grote klepper aan. Zijn ‘Taxi Blues’ staat nog, in tegenstelling tot zijn latere opgenomen rock-‘n-roll, stevig in de rhythm & blues verankerd. Toen Little Richard besloot om dominee te worden, werd Larry Williams gezien als zijn opvolger. Alhoewel pianist Williams over hetzelfde rauwe stemgeluid beschikte, maakte hij het toch niet helemaal waar. Wat Williams wel achter zijn naam mag zetten, is dat veel van zijn nummers, zoals ‘Bony Moronie’ en ‘Dizzy Miss Lizzy’ gecoverd werden ten tijde van de ‘Britse Invasie’. Hier is hij aanwezig met ‘Oh Baby’ dat deels ook bewijst dat hij als opvolger van Little Richard toch het één en ander miste.
Ear King bracht zijn ganse leven in New Orleans door en die typische sound klinkt duidelijk door in ‘Funny Face’. Die sound klinkt ook met mondjesmaat door in ‘I Got A Rock And Roll Gal’ van Billy Lamont, alsook in ‘You’re So Good Looking’ van Otis Smith.  De vreemde eend in de bijt komt er met Willie Joe. Gebackt door het orkest van René Hall tovert hij ‘Twitchy’ uit zijn éénsnarige elektrische gitaar. Voor Bill Haley was ‘Shake, Rattle And Roll’ een megahit. Hier krijg je de ongekuiste en voor mij betere versie van grootmeester Joe Turner. Opwindende rock-‘n-roll presenteren ook Steve Gibson’s Red Caps met zang van Dave Patillo in ‘Rock And Roll Stomp’. Het zou Patillos enige opname zijn. Gitarist Guitar Slim is geen onbekende bij de bluesfans. Hier zorgt hij voor de titeltrack van deze uitgave, een serieuze rockende rhythm & blues die op een ietwat gospelachtige manier eindigt. Annie Laurie gaat verder op de door Slim ingeslagen weg met het al even knappe ‘Rockin’ And Rollin’ Again’. Ike Turner’s Kings Of Rhythm staan steeds garant voor kwaliteit. Hier zijn ze de begeleidingsband van Billy Gayles, die met ‘Sad As A Man Can Be’ een parel van een song loslaat. Wanneer je het over de pioniers van de rock-‘n-roll hebt, kan je niet om Chuck Berry heen. Niet alleen was hij een voorbeeld voor veel artiesten, maar ook zijn nummers werden en worden nog altijd gretig gecoverd. Zo ook het op dit album te vinden ‘Come On’, ooit nog door The Stones aan het vinyl toevertrouwd. Little Milton maakte zowel in de rhythm & blues als soul geweldige opnames. Dat hij beide genres op een heel aparte manier kon samenbrengen, laat hij horen in ‘Long Distance Operator’. Een fraaie pianoblues presenteert daarna Del Thorne in ‘I Let Him Move Me’. Twee grootheden die vaak samen het podium deelden, waren gitarist Earl Hooker en mondharmonicavirtuoos Junior Wells. Hier maken ze het mooie weer op het instrumentale ‘Universal Rock’.
Doo-wop komt er met Don Julian and The Meadowlarks in ‘Oop Boopy Oop’, alsook met Bill Pinky and The Turks in ‘After The Hop’ en door The El Dorados heerlijk samen zingend in ‘At My Front Door’. Zoals we van hen gewoon zijn, bevat ‘Bark, Battle And Ball’ van The Platters ook nu weer prima samenzang.
Afsluiten zouden we doen met het instrumentale ‘Quarter To One’ van Roy Hawkins…..maar stop je afspeelapparaat niet, want met ‘Fun Fun’ van Lloyd Nolen staat je nog een bonustrack te wachten.
Series als ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ bundelen heel wat songs die anders de liefhebbers van rockende rhythm & blues niet zouden bereiken. Een ander pluspunt is dat het KokoMojo label hun filosofie ‘killers and no fillers’ steeds alle eer aandoet.

With ‘Oh Yeah’ we have already reached the eighth volume in the ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ series. What is striking again is that a large number of artists who recorded excellent rhythm & blues during the fifties and sixties of the last century nevertheless did not make it into the spotlight. In addition, this edition also contains a number of resounding names. The album kicks off with Beverly Wright and the swinging ‘Shake Till I’m Shook’, which is followed by the cheerful and playful ‘Whoa-Ho (Let’s Get Together)’ by Kitty & Clay. Then Little Richard announces the first big name. His ‘Taxi Blues’ is still firmly anchored in rhythm & blues, in contrast to his later recorded rock-‘n-roll. When Little Richard decided to become a dominee, Larry Williams was seen as his successor. Although pianist Williams had the same raw voice, he did not quite live up to it. What Williams can put behind his name is that many of his songs, such as ‘Bony Moronie’ and ‘Dizzy Miss Lizzy’ were covered during the ‘British Invasion’. Here he is present with ‘Oh Baby’, which partly proves that he missed out on a few things as a successor to Little Richard.

That sound also sounds in small doses in ‘I Got A Rock And Roll Gal’ by Billy Lamont, as well as in ‘You’re So Good Looking’ by Otis Smith. The odd one out comes in the form of Willie Joe. Backed by René Hall’s orchestra, he conjures up ‘Twitchy’ from his one-string electric guitar. For Bill Haley, ‘Shake, Rattle And Roll’ was a mega hit. Here you get the unedited and, to me, better version by grandmaster Joe Turner. Exciting rock-‘n-roll is also presented by Steve Gibson’s Red Caps with vocals by Dave Patillo in ‘Rock And Roll Stomp’. It would be Patillo’s only recording. Guitarist Guitar Slim is no stranger to blues fans. Here he provides the title track of this release, a serious rocking rhythm & blues that ends in a somewhat gospel-like manner. Annie Laurie continues on the path taken by Slim with the equally great ‘Rockin’ And Rollin’ Again’. Ike Turner’s Kings Of Rhythm always guarantee quality. Here they are the backing band of Billy Gayles, who unleashes a gem of a song with ‘Sad As A Man Can Be’. When you talk about the pioneers of rock-‘n-roll, you can’t ignore Chuck Berry. Not only was he an example for many artists, but his songs were and still are eagerly covered. This also applies to ‘Come On’, which can be found on this album and was once entrusted to vinyl by The Stones. Little Milton made great recordings in both rhythm & blues and soul. He shows that he could combine both genres in a very special way in ‘Long Distance Operator’. Del Thorne then presents a beautiful piano blues in ‘I Let Him Move Me’. Two greats who often shared the stage together were guitarist Earl Hooker and harmonica virtuoso Junior Wells. Here they make the most of the instrumental ‘Universal Rock’.
Doo-wop comes with Don Julian and The Meadowlarks in ‘Oop Boopy Oop’, as well as with Bill Pinky and The Turks in ‘After The Hop’ and by The El Dorados singing wonderfully together in ‘At My Front Door’. As we are used to from them, ‘Bark, Battle And Ball’ by The Platters also contains excellent harmonies. We would like to close with the instrumental ‘Quarter To One’ by Roy Hawkins…..but don’t stop your player, because with ‘Fun Fun’ by Lloyd Nolen you can expect a bonus track.
Series like ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ bundle quite a few songs that would otherwise not reach lovers of rocking rhythm & blues. Another plus is that the KokoMojo label always does full justice to their philosophy ‘killers and no fillers’.
