Wanneer country en westernartiesten in de vijftiger jaren van de vorige eeuw voor een ‘cross-over’ van hun genre met rock-‘n-roll zorgden, resulteerde dat in knappe songs. Songs die net als deze in de rock-‘n-roll, ‘drinken’, ‘dansen’, ‘liefde’ en ‘liegen en bedriegen als onderwerp hadden. Wat ze ook gemeen hadden met de rock-‘n-roll was, dat ze je naar de dansvloer zogen. Net als in de eerder verschenen twee volumes, staat ook het derde volume hier weer bol van.
Dit volume opent meteen enorm swingend met ‘I Want A Bowlegged Woman’ van Jimmy Ballard, een song die Bull Moose Jackson in 1948 reeds opnam. Ballard wordt gevolgd door Jimmy Boyd. Boyd was 13 jaar toen hij de klassieker ‘I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus’ opnam. Hier hoor je Jimmy met het in 1956 opgenomen country rockend ‘Crazy Mixed Up Blues’. Lattie Moore nam ‘Juke Joint Johnny’ voor de eerste maal op in 1953. Het nummer ademde toen reeds een rockabillysfeer uit. Tijdens de hoogdagen van dit genre in 1956, nam Lattie het opnieuw op. Naast een carrière onder eigen naam, was Billy Strange ook een veelgevraagde sessiemuzikant. Onder eigen naam schittert hij hier in ‘Let Me In There Baby’.
Fraaie prestaties op steelgitaar en fiddle kan je ontdekken op ‘Tom Cattin’ Around’ van Speedy Noris & His Radio Rangers. Swingend klinkt zeker ‘You Got The Right Number’ van ‘Rusty’ McDonald. McDonald presteerde ook als zanger voor Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys. Die krijg je trouwens later ook nog in het energieke ‘Miss Molly’. In haar hoogdagen kreeg Ann Jones de titel van ‘The Hillbilly Girl’. Niet te verwonderen als je haar hoort met ‘I’ve Had It’. Nummer met een enorm hoog rock-‘n-rollgehalte komt er met Howard Crockett en zijn ‘If You Let Me’, inclusief een indrukwekkende clean klinkende gitaarsolo. Rocken doet later ook Jimmie Piper in ‘Don’t Play Around (With My Heart)’. En lijkt dat gitaartje niet veel op de begeleiding van Johnny Cash? Heerlijk en vrolijk klinkt ‘Sweetie Pie’ van Johnnie & Jack. De backing vocals door The Jordanaires dragen zeker bij tot dit gevoel. Dit duo komt nog een keertje terug met het aparte en met indrukwekkende bongo’s overgoten voortreffelijke ‘Uncle John’s Bongos’.
Sublieme samenzang komt dit maal uit Nieuw Zeeland met Apaapa Sisters samen met The Downtown Boys en ‘Guess Things Happen That Way’. Heerlijke samensmeltende stemmen definiëren ook opvolger ‘Leroy’ van ‘Nita, Rita & Ruby.
In vorige series zagen we reeds dat acetaatopnames vaak knappe songs bevatten. Wel, iemand die zulke opnames bij de vleet maakte met de hoop dat iemand zijn songs ooit zou opnemen, was Sandy Rivers. Dat hij een neus had voor goed in het oor liggende nummers, bewijst hij in ‘A Woman Is Like A Guitar’. Over Red Romine is niet veel geweten. Dat ‘Money In The Bank’ een toffe countryrocker is, weten wij wel. Country, rockabilly en zelfs een flard bluegrass zijn terug te vinden in ‘Rock-A-Billy Baby’ van Johnny Duncan & The Blue Grass Boys. Een leuke versie van ‘Tweedle Dee’ komt er met Pee Wee King featuring Redd Stewart & The Trio. Hoor je meteen waar Little Jimmy Osmond destijds de inspiratie haalde.
Afsluiten doet deze compilatie met de slow ‘Tomorrow Night’ van Carl Smith.
Het leuke aan series als deze is het feit dat de artiesten op een zeer geslaagde manier twee genres mixen. Dat uit zich niet alleen in de songs, maar ook in het gebruik van de instrumenten. Naast de gitaar, hoor je vanzelfsprekend ook de steelgitaar en de fiddle. Heerlijk derde volume!

When country and western artists in the 1950s created a crossover between their genre and rock 'n' roll, the result was brilliant songs. Songs that, just like those in rock 'n' roll, had ‘drinking’, ‘dancing’, ‘love’, and ‘lying and cheating’ as their themes. What they also had in common with rock 'n' roll was that they drew you to the dance floor. Just as in the two previously released volumes, the third volume is also full of this.
This volume opens with a swing, ‘I Want A Bowlegged Woman’ by Jimmy Ballard, a song Bull Moose Jackson recorded in 1948. Ballard is followed by Jimmy Boyd. Boyd was 13 years old when he recorded the classic ‘I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus’. Here you hear Jimmy with the 1956 country-rocking ‘Crazy Mixed Up Blues’. Lattie Moore first recorded ‘Juke Joint Johnny’ in 1953. The song already exuded a rockabilly vibe. During the genre's heyday in 1956, Lattie re-recorded it. Besides a career under his own name, Billy Strange was also a sought-after session musician. He shines under his own name on ‘Let Me In There Baby’.
Fine performances on steel guitar and fiddle can be found on ‘Tom Cattin' Around’ by Speedy Noris & His Radio Rangers. ‘You Got The Right Number’ by ‘Rusty’ McDonald certainly sounds swinging. McDonald also sang for Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys. Incidentally, you'll get them later on the energetic ‘Miss Molly’. In her heyday, Ann Jones earned the title ‘The Hillbilly Girl’. Not surprising when you hear her on ‘I've Had It’. A song with a tremendously high rock 'n' roll feel arrives with Howard Crockett and his ‘If You Let Me’, complete with an impressive clean-sounding guitar solo. Jimmie Piper also rocks later in ‘Don't Play Around (With My Heart)’. And doesn't that guitar sound a lot like Johnny Cash's accompaniment? ‘Sweetie Pie’ by Johnnie & Jack sounds delightful and cheerful. The backing vocals by The Jordanaires certainly contribute to this feeling. This duo returns once more with the unique and excellent ‘Uncle John's Bongos’, drenched in impressive bongos.
Sublime harmonies come this time from New Zealand, featuring the Apaapa Sisters along with The Downtown Boys and ‘Guess Things Happen That Way’. Wonderfully merging voices also define the follow-up single ‘Leroy’ from ‘Nita, Rita & Ruby’.
In previous series, we saw that acetate recordings often contain beautiful songs. Well, someone who made a ton of such recordings with the hope that someone would one day record his songs was Sandy Rivers. He proved he had a knack for catchy songs in ‘A Woman Is Like A Guitar’. Not much is known about Red Romine. We do know that ‘Money In The Bank’ is a cool country rocker. Country, rockabilly, and even a touch of bluegrass can be found in ‘Rock-A-Billy Baby’ by Johnny Duncan & The Blue Grass Boys. A great version of ‘Tweedle Dee’ is provided by Pee Wee King featuring Redd Stewart & The Trio. You can immediately hear where Little Jimmy Osmond drew his inspiration back then.
This compilation concludes with the slow ‘Tomorrow Night’ by Carl Smith.
The great thing about series like this is that the artists successfully blend two genres. This is reflected not only in the songs but also in their use of instruments. Besides the guitar, you'll naturally also hear the steel guitar and the fiddle. Wonderful third volume!
