De jaarlijkse vakantie loopt op zijn laatste benen. Voor velen staat er een nieuw schooljaar te wachten, terwijl anderen de schoolpoorten definitief vaarwel zeggen en op zoek gaan naar een passende job. In welke situatie je ook zit, veel maakt het allemaal niet uit, want het Duitse Bear Family Records heeft op het tweede volume van ‘School House Rock’ andermaal 32 formidabele tracks gebundeld. Tracks in de meest diverse muziekgenres die je doen terugkijken op de voorbije vakantie, je begeleiden naar het nieuwe schooljaar of naar je eerste job. Rockend en rollend beweegt Mack Vickery zich, hunkerend naar de vakantie, door ‘High School Blues’. Wie ook blij is dat het schooljaar erop zit, is Gary U.S. Bonds. Zijn ‘School Is Out’ is bovendien de ideale partysong om dit te vieren. Soulvolle rhythm & blues mag je even later verwachten van Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. Voor rechttoe-rechtaan rockabilly skip je best naar Miss Georgia en haar knap ‘Rockin’ After School’. The Hollywood Playboys geven op ‘Ding! Dong! School Is Out’ het einde van het schooljaar dan weer een heerlijk doo-wop gevoel. Bekend in de oren klinkt ongetwijfeld Connie Francis’ ‘Vacation’. Een andere legende die hier van de partij is, is Chuck Berry. Hij houdt het naar zijn normen nogal rustig in het bluesy ‘Vacation Time’. Meer bekend volk passeert er met Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps tijdens ‘Walkin’ Home From School’. Persoonlijk ben ik een enorme fan van Smiley Lewis. Blij dat hij dan ook hier een plaatsje kreeg met het krachtige ‘School Days Are Back Again’ en zeker met het sublieme werk op de zes snaren. Later passeren ook nog The Coasters met hun onafscheidelijke ‘Charlie Brown’. Die krijgt nog een antwoord in ‘Charlie Brown Got Expelled’ van Joe Tex and his X Class Mates. Prachtig is tevens Dale Hawkins’ versie van ‘Back To School Blues’. Het is een meer commerciële versie van Mack Vickery’s ‘High School Blues’, waarmee dit album opent. Meer richting pop drijft later ‘Vacation’s Over’ van Faron Young. Eén van de eerste popsterren in Engeland was Adam Faith. Hier werkt hij zich met succes door Jerry Lee’s ‘High School Confidential’ en let ook op de knappe backing vocals en het prima gitaarwerk. Voor een tearjerker van formaat moet je bij John D. Loudermilk en zijn ‘Goin’ Away To School’ zijn. Blues is eerder de basis voor ‘School Boy Blues’ van Bobby Mitchell and The Toppers. Een andere bluesy tune is ook Timmie ‘Oh Yeah’ Rogers’ ‘Back To School Again’. Een wel heel aparte en uitermate geslaagde versie van Chuck Berry’s ‘School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes The Bell)’ krijg je van Bob Cort Skiffle Group.
Een obscure track, maar wel een fantastische komt er met Bucky & Premieres. Zij presenteren met ‘Summer School’ een fraai staaltje van garagerock. Een in echo gedrenkte stem maakt van Lou Josie’s ‘Vacation’s Over’ een super prima rocker. Legende Louis Jordan mag samen met zijn Tympany Five afsluiten met ‘School Days’.
Door het mooie samengaan van minder bekende met bekende tracks, is dit tweede volume van ‘School House Rock’ zeker geslaagd en het aanschaffen meer dan waard.

The annual holiday is coming to an end. For many, a new school year awaits, while others are saying goodbye to the school gates for good and are looking for a suitable job. Whatever situation you are in, it doesn't matter much, because the German Bear Family Records has once again bundled 32 formidable tracks on the second volume of 'School House Rock'. Tracks in the most diverse music genres that make you look back on the past holiday, guide you to the new school year or to your first job. Rocking and rolling, Mack Vickery moves through 'High School Blues', yearning for the holiday. Gary U.S. Bonds is also happy that the school year is over. His 'School Is Out' is also the ideal party song to celebrate this. Soulful rhythm & blues can be expected a little later from Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. For straightforward rockabilly, you should skip to Miss Georgia and her beautiful 'Rockin' After School'. The Hollywood Playboys give 'Ding! Dong!' School Is Out’ the end of the school year again a wonderful doo-wop feeling. Connie Francis’ ‘Vacation’ will undoubtedly sound familiar. Another legend who is present here is Chuck Berry. He keeps it rather quiet in the bluesy ‘Vacation Time’. More famous people pass by with Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps during ‘Walkin’ Home From School’. Personally, I am a huge fan of Smiley Lewis. Glad that he also got a place here with the powerful ‘School Days Are Back Again’ and certainly with the sublime work on the six strings. Later The Coasters also pass by with their inseparable ‘Charlie Brown’. He gets an answer in ‘Charlie Brown Got Expelled’ by Joe Tex and his X Class Mates. Dale Hawkins’ version of ‘Back To School Blues’ is also beautiful. It is a more commercial version of Mack Vickery’s ‘High School Blues’, with which this album opens. Later ‘Vacation’s Over’ by Faron Young drifts more towards pop. One of the first pop stars in England was Adam Faith. Here he successfully works his way through Jerry Lee’s ‘High School Confidential’ and also note the great backing vocals and the excellent guitar work. For a tearjerker of size you have to go to John D. Loudermilk and his ‘Goin’ Away To School’. Blues is more the basis for ‘School Boy Blues’ by Bobby Mitchell and The Toppers. Another bluesy tune is also Timmie ‘Oh Yeah’ Rogers’ ‘Back To School Again’. A very special and extremely successful version of Chuck Berry’s ‘School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes The Bell)’ comes from Bob Cort Skiffle Group.

A voice drenched in echo makes Lou Josie’s ‘Vacation’s Over’ a super fine rocker. Legend Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five may close with ‘School Days’. The beautiful combination of lesser-known and well-known tracks makes this second volume of ‘School House Rock’ a success and more than worth purchasing.
