​West-Indië, de Bermuda’s, Cuba en duizenden kleine eilandjes verspreiden zich over de Caribische zee, waarlangs Columbus destijds het nieuwe continent bereikte. In de twintiger jaren ontpopte het Caribisch gebied zich als een aantrekkelijke pleisterplaats voor toeristen. Het bruisende nachtleven op eilanden als Antigua en Guadeloupe trok daarnaast ook een publiek van gangsters en smokkelaars aan. Het Latijnse ritme, gekenmerkt door de Afrikaanse drums en percussie veroverde van daaruit in de late jaren ’20 de wereld. Conga’s en de opzwepende ritmes maakten in de veertiger en vijftiger jaren ook deel uit van de blues en rhythm en blues. Kortom de ongedwongen, vrolijke en uitnodigende sound ontstaan in het Caribisch gebied, vormt ook vandaag nog de perfecte soundtrack voor zomerse party’s.
Het KokoMojo label verzamelde 28 tracks die je meteen onderdompelen in de Latin sfeer. Daarvan krijg je meteen al een voorsmaakje bij opener, het instrumentale ‘Ojai’ van Joe Lutcher en zijn orkest. Nummer dat rhythm & blues verbindt met Latin ritmes. Wil je nog meer in de zwoele Latinsfeer raken, dan zal ‘Geechie Goomie’ van Marga Benitez daar ongetwijfeld voor zorgen. Iedere big band had in de helft van de vorige eeuw wel één of meerdere Latinnummers op hun repertoire staan. De big bands zijn dan ook overduidelijk aanwezig op deze compilatie. Zo ook de bekende Dave Bartholomew en zijn orkest. Bartholomew komt drie keren aan bod, namelijk met het ‘Cat Music’,  ‘Messy Bessy’ en ‘Carnival Day’. Nummers die hij perfect linkt aan New Orleans rhythm & blues.
Ook Nat King Cole liet zich inpakken door het ontspannend genre in het schitterende ‘Bang Bang Boogie’, net zoals trouwens Joe Liggins, die samen met zijn Honeydrippers het zomerse ‘Hey Mama’ serveert. Helemaal ‘hot’ wordt het met ‘I Come From Jamaica’ door Chris Powell & his Blue Flames. De hypnotiserende percussie geeft ook het instrumentale ‘Teen Flip’ van het orkest van Ernie Fields die typische Latin feel. Een meer dan subliem staaltje van de mix tussen rumba en blues ervaar je in ‘The Rhumba Blues’ van Skeets Tolbert en orkest. Dat geldt ook voor ‘Harlem Rhumbain’ The Blues’ van Oran ‘Hot Lips’ Page. Feit is dat Latin zich als een vis in het water voelt, wanneer het genre gemengd wordt met Amerikaanse invloeden. Dat gebeurt ook in ‘Going Back To New Orleans’ van Ellis Slow Walsh.
Artiesten uit de regio die de Latinsound met de paplepel toegediend kregen zijn hier ook van de partij. Een eerste maal met The Talbot Brothers of Bermuda met ‘Bermuda’s Buggy Ride’, waarin Latin subtiel verweven wordt met een Amerikaans geluid. Later volgt dan nog Cyril Diaz met ‘Voodoo’.
Hoe je een klassieker als ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ een exotisch tintje kan geven, laat Rose Mitchell horen. Formidabele versie! Bluesgrootmeester en gitaarlegende T-Bone Walker mag afsluiten. Ook hij viel voor het Latinritme in ‘The Plain Old Down Home Blues’.
Met de zomer in het verschiet komen de zomerbars en cocktailparty’s er weer aan. Laat ‘Shake It! Rhythm and Blues gone Caribbean’ je daar door een zomerse zwoele Latinsound begeleiden. ‘You won’t regret it!’

The West Indies, the Bermudas, Cuba and thousands of small islands spread across the Caribbean Sea, along which Columbus reached the new continent. In the 1920s, the Caribbean emerged as an attractive stopping place for tourists. The vibrant nightlife on islands such as Antigua and Quadaloupe also attracted an audience of gangsters and smugglers. The Latin rhythm, characterized by African drums and percussion, conquered the world in the late 1920s. Congas and their exciting rhythms were also part of the blues and rhythm and blues in the forties and fifties. In short, the casual, cheerful and inviting sound that originated in the Caribbean still forms the perfect soundtrack for summer parties today.
The KokoMojo label collected 28 tracks that immediately immerse you in the Latin atmosphere. You immediately get a taste of this with the opener, the instrumental 'Ojai' by Joe Lutcher and his orchestra. Song that connects rhythm & blues with Latin rhythms. If you want to get even more into the sultry Latin atmosphere, 'Geechie Goomie' by Marga Benitez will undoubtedly take care of that. Every big band in half of the last century had one or more Latin songs in their repertoire. So, the big bands are clearly present on this compilation. This also includes the famous Dave Bartholomew and his orchestra. Bartholomew is featured three times, namely with 'Cat Music', 'Messy Bessy' and 'Carnival Day'. Songs that he links perfectly to New Orleans rhythm & blues.
Nat King Cole also immersed himself in the relaxing genre in the beautiful 'Bang Bang Boogie', just like Joe Liggins, who serves the summery 'Hey Mama' together with his Honeydrippers. Things get really hot with 'I Come From Jamaica' by Chris Powell & his Blue Flames. The hypnotic percussion also gives the instrumental 'Teen Flip' by Ernie Fields' orchestra that typical Latin feel. You will experience a more than sublime example of the mix between rhumba and blues in 'The Rhumba Blues' by Skeets Tolbert and orchestra. This also applies to 'Harlem Rhumbain' The Blues' by Oran 'Hot Lips' Page. The fact is that Latin feels like a fish in water when the genre is mixed with American influences. This also happens in 'Going Back To New Orleans' by Ellis Slow Walsh.
Artists from the Caribbean region who were brought up with the Latin sound are also present here. A first time with The Talbot Brothers of Bermuda with 'Bermuda's Buggy Ride', in which Latin is subtly interwoven with an American sound. Cyril Diaz follows later with 'Voodoo'.
Rose Mitchell shows how you can give a classic like 'Baby Please Don't Go' an exotic touch. Formidable verzien! Blues grandmaster and guitar legend T-Bone Walker can close. He also fell for the Latin rhythm in 'The Plain Old Down Home Blues'.
