​Met de 33 tracks op dit album, allen uit de archieven van het Starday label, zitten we meteen reeds bij volume 47 in de ‘That’ll Flat…Git It’ serie. Starday zag het levenslicht in Beaumont, Texas in juni 1953. De eigenaars waren Jack Starns Jr. en Harold ‘Pappy’ Daily. De bedoeling van beide heren was om van Starday een puur countrylabel te maken. Al vlug kwam Don Pierce aan boord. Na het vertrek van Starns Jr. ontstond midden jaren vijftig het rockabillygenre, waarvan Starday graag een graantje wou meepikken. Zo hesen zij grootheden als George Jones en Sleepy LaBeef, toen nog vermeld als Sleepy LaBeff, aan boord. Naast deze twee artiesten vonden ook bekende rockers als Sonny Fisher en Link Davis onderdak bij Starday. Net zo belangrijk waren echter de vele opnames van onbekende, vaak amateuristische en obscure, maar energieke talenten, die het label uitbracht in de ‘Starday’s Custom Series’. Voor deze serie konden amateurs hun thuis gemaakte opnames insturen en tegen een vergoeding werden ze dan eigenaar van 300 vinyls met hun creaties. Zo kwamen onbekende maar daarom niet minder talentvolle rockers aan hun trekken. Dat deze heren opwindende, energieke rock-‘n-roll voortbrachten, valt te horen op de pareltjes van o.a. Buddy Shaw, Larry Nolen, Hal Payne, Arnold Parker and The Southernairs en Lou Walker.
Rocky Bill Ford runde een barbershop, maar dat hij ook een talentvolle rocker was, etaleert hij in de eerste track ‘Have You Seen Mabel’. Bill Ford wordt onmiddellijk gevolgd door de bekende Sonny Fisher met de prima rockabillysong ‘Sneaky Pete’. Later keert Sonny nog terug met ‘Little Red Wagon’. De toen nog als Sleepy LaBeff genoemde, mag een eerste maal schitteren in het niet eerder uitgebrachte ‘I Ain’t Gonna Take It’ en in afsluiter ‘I’m Through’. Heerlijke rockabilly, inclusief prima gitaar- en pianowerk komt er met ‘Don’t Sweep That Dirt On Me’ van Buddy Shaw. Een opname die in de eerder genoemde ‘Starday’s Custom Series’ uitkwam, was ‘King Of The Ducktail Cats’ van Larry Nolen & His Bandits. Formidabele rockende Western Swing! George Jones raakte eerder bekend als countryartiest. Rockabilly zat hem echter ook als gegoten. Dat hoor je hier in ‘How Come It’ dat hij opnam als Thumper Jones. Jones was niet de enige countryartiest die rockabilly opnam. Dat gold ook voor Leon Payne, die als Rock Rogers het voortreffelijke ‘That Ain’t It’ opnam. Voor een dosis honky tonk zorgt een andere Payne, namelijk Hal Payne in ‘Honky Tonk Stomp’. Vernon Wray was de oudere broer van Link Wray. Diens typische gitaarsound hoor je trouwens ook in ‘Teenage Cutie’ en aan de drums zat die andere Wray, namelijk Doug. Steelgitaar en fiddle geven Bill Mack’s ‘It’s Saturday Night’ naast rockabilly ook een countrysfeertje. Wie niet in één genre bleef hangen, was Link Davis. Link begon als countryfiddler, schakelde dan over naar cajun om tenslotte als tenorsaxofonist te schitteren op enkele legendarische rock-‘n-rollsongs, waaronder ‘Chantilly Lace’ van The Big Bopper en ‘Runnig Bear’ van Johnny Preston. Onder eigen naam nam hij voor Starday het originele ‘Sixteen Chicks’ en ‘Don’t Big Shot Me’ op. Rockabilly van de bovenste plank, waarop hij ook een aardig stukje saxsolo presenteert. Val je voor prima vocaal werk, dan is ‘My Blackbirds Are Bluebirds Now’ van Sleepy Jeffers and The Davis Twins een aanrader zonder meer. Bluesinvloeden zijn dan weer terug te vinden in Jimmy Johnson’s ‘Woman Love’.
Bill Dahl zorgt ook nu weer, dat je in het 37 pagina’s tellende booklet alle info krijgt over de artiesten en de tracks.
Het mag inmiddels wel duidelijk zijn dat, indien je ‘the hottest rockabilly of The Lone Star State’ aan je collectie wil toevoegen, het 47ste volume in de ‘That’ll Flat…Git It!’ serie meer dan zijn geld waard is.

With the 33 tracks on this album, all from the archives of the Starday label, we are already at volume 47 in the ‘That’ll Flat…Git It’ series. Starday was founded in Beaumont, Texas in June 1953. The owners were Jack Starns Jr. and Harold ‘Pappy’ Daily. The intention of both gentlemen was to make Starday a pure country label. Don Pierce soon came on board. After the departure of Starns Jr., the rockabilly genre emerged in the mid-fifties, from which Starday was eager to get a piece of the pie. They brought on board greats such as George Jones and Sleepy LaBeef, then still listed as Sleepy LaBeff. In addition to these two artists, well-known rockers such as Sonny Fisher and Link Davis also found shelter at Starday. Just as important, however, were the many recordings of unknown, often amateurish and obscure, but energetic talents, which the label released in the ‘Starday’s Custom Series’. For this series, amateurs could send in their home-made recordings and, for a fee, they would become the owners of 300 vinyls with their creations. This way, unknown but no less talented rockers got their money's worth. That these gentlemen produced exciting, energetic rock-'n-roll can be heard on the gems of Buddy Shaw, Larry Nolen, Hal Payne, Arnold Parker and The Southernairs and Lou Walker, among others.

Bill Ford is immediately followed by the well-known Sonny Fisher with the excellent rockabilly song 'Sneaky Pete'. Sonny returns later with 'Little Red Wagon'. The then still called Sleepy LaBeff, gets to shine for the first time in the previously unreleased 'I Ain't Gonna Take It' and in the closing song 'I'm Through'. Wonderful rockabilly, including excellent guitar and piano work, comes with ‘Don’t Sweep That Dirt On Me’ by Buddy Shaw. A recording that was released in the aforementioned ‘Starday’s Custom Series’ was ‘King Of The Ducktail Cats’ by Larry Nolen & His Bandits. Formidable rocking Western Swing! George Jones became known earlier as a country artist. However, rockabilly also suited him like a glove. You can hear that here in ‘How Come It’ that he recorded as Thumper Jones. Jones was not the only country artist who recorded rockabilly. That also applied to Leon Payne, who recorded the excellent ‘That Ain’t It’ as Rock Rogers. Another Payne provides a dose of honky tonk, namely Hal Payne in ‘Honky Tonk Stomp’. Vernon Wray was the older brother of Link Wray. His typical guitar sound can also be heard in ‘Teenage Cutie’ and the other Wray, namely Doug, was on the drums. Steel guitar and fiddle give Bill Mack’s ‘It’s Saturday Night’ a country vibe in addition to rockabilly. Link Davis was not one to stick to one genre. Link started as a country fiddler, then switched to Cajun and finally shone as a tenor saxophonist on several legendary rock-‘n-roll songs, including ‘Chantilly Lace’ by The Big Bopper and ‘Runnig Bear’ by Johnny Preston. Under his own name, he recorded the original ‘Sixteen Chicks’ and ‘Don’t Big Shot Me’ for Starday. Top-notch rockabilly, on which he also presents a nice piece of sax solo. If you like excellent vocal work, then ‘My Blackbirds Are Bluebirds Now’ by Sleepy Jeffers and The Davis Twins is definitely recommended. Blues influences can be found in Jimmy Johnson’s ‘Woman Love’.
