In het 52ste volume van de serie ‘That’ll Flat…Git It!’, duikt Bear Family Records in de archieven van de labels Mar-Vel Records en Glenn Records. Mar-Vel Records was een klein onafhankelijk label in het industriële hart van Noordwest-Indiana, net over de staatsgrens met Chicago. Beide labels werden opgericht door Harry Glenn, een ondernemer met een enorme dosis energie en een blik op de toekomst. Glenn was een speciaal figuur, want naast producer en idealist, nam hij ook zelf de promotie van zijn releases waar. Daarvoor stak hij zijn oude Rambler stationwagen vol met duizenden singles en doorkruiste hij het Zuiden. Onaangekondigd stapte hij de radiostations binnen en charmeerde hij de dj’s om zijn nieuwste singles te pushen. Zijn visionair aspect kan je in één oneliner vatten, namelijk ‘Hits van morgen, vandaag opgenomen’. In de vijftiger en zestiger jaren zorgde Mar-Vel voor een lijst met rauwe, ongepolijste rockabilly en country. Heel wat artiesten wisten Glenns aandacht te trekken. Zo was er Jack Bradshaw, die voor een korte periode bij Decca onderdak vond en Bobby Sisco nam rockabilly op voor Chess. Het opvallendst was de tiener Sherry Lee. Zij zou later wereldbekend geraken als Jackie DeShannon. Herbie Duncan wist dan weer het best de Mar-Vel gedachte in songs om te zetten. Zijn in 1958 uitgebrachte single ‘Hot Lips Baby’, zoals je op deze compilatie kan horen, is een wild, ongeremd en ietwat chaotisch rockabillynummer, maar enorm representatief voor het genre. De nummers die op deze hit volgden waren even heftig en rauw, waarmee hij de cultstatus van echte rockabillypionier verdient. ‘Little Angel’ (de flipzijde van ‘Hot Lips Baby) en opvolgers ‘Escape’ en ‘That’s All’ sieren dan ook dit album.
Harry Glenns muzikale visie was kortom fenomenaal. De vaak tot de arbeidersklasse behorende jonge artiesten met enorm veel potentieel vonden bij Glenn een luisterend oor. Dat resulteerde in pareltjes van songs, waarvan 36 een plaats kregen op dit album.
De authenticiteit valt al meteen te merken bij opener ‘Jump Baby Jump’ van Harry Carter ‘The Rock ‘N’ Roll Apache. Carter komt later nog met 3 tracks aan bod. Jack Bradshaw was oorspronkelijk een countryartiest. Zijn ‘Naughty Girls’ gaat echter meer richting rockabilly, al draagt het toch sporen van country. Een pracht van een song met een inspirerende gitaarsolo komt er met het gesofisticeerde ‘Dark And Stormy’ van Bill Ferguson. Dat Glenn een neus had voor talent, blijkt ook uit de opnames van Billy Nix, die in ‘Moon Twist’ met scheurende sax, een pracht van een nummer neerzet. Nix keert ook later nog terug met twee nummers, waaronder het formidabele, van schitterend arrangement voorziene en twistend ‘Get With The Beat’.
Bluesinvloeden kenmerken zonder meer Paul Parkers ‘Rockin’ For Goldwater’. Gitaarsolo’s zijn bijna verplichte kost in rock-‘n-roll en rockabilly. Mel Kimbrough pakt het in ‘Ha, Ha, Hey, Hey’ anders aan en vervangt die door een knappe drumsolo. Origineel klinken ook The Law Brothers in ‘Root Beer’. Emotionele samenzang, een heerlijke twang gitaar en een dosis humor vervolledigen het nummer.
Meer richting honky-tonk drijft Bill Hall in ‘Move Over Rover’, dat geldt trouwens ook voor ‘Honky Tonkin’ Rhythm’ van Bobby Sisco. Hall zorgt later ook nog voor het op een toffe riff gebouwde ‘I Need Some Lovin’’. Voor een vleugje country zorgt dan weer Bob Burton in het met steelgitaar en fiddle opgesmukte ‘Tired Of Rocking’, terwijl The Gaye Sisters voor een fraaie samenzang zorgen in ‘Oh Ricky’. Burton keert ook terug met ‘Boogie Woogie Baby’. Country vormt ook de basis voor Jim Gatlin, hier aanwezig met ‘The Way You’re Treating Me’ en ‘Would It Matter At All’.
Het wordt andermaal duidelijk dat vele onafhankelijke labels voor razendknappe songs zorgden. Bij de major labels primeerde meestal het grote geldgewin. Winst maken is noodzakelijk om de boel draaiend te houden, maar daarnaast is het potentieel van jonge onbekende artiesten minstens net zo belangrijk. En dat had Harry Glenn als geen ander voor ogen.
Zoals we steeds van Bear Family Records gewend zijn, bevat ook dit volume een fraai uitgevoerd booklet, inclusief zeldzame foto’s, met alle info betreffende de tracks en de artiesten.

In the 52nd volume of the ‘That'll Flat...Git It!’ series, Bear Family Records delves into the archives of the Mar-Vel Records and Glenn Records labels. Mar-Vel Records was a small independent label in the industrial heart of Northwest Indiana, just across the state line from Chicago. Both labels were founded by Harry Glenn, an entrepreneur with enormous energy and a vision for the future. Glenn was a special character because, besides being a producer and idealist, he also personally promoted his releases. To do so, he filled his old Rambler station wagon with thousands of singles and crisscrossed the South. He would drop in unannounced at radio stations and charm DJs into pushing his latest singles. His visionary nature can be summed up in a single line: ‘Tomorrow's hits, recorded today’. In the 1950s and 1960s, Mar-Vel produced a roster of raw, unpolished rockabilly and country. Numerous artists caught Glenn's attention. For example, there was Jack Bradshaw, who briefly found a home at Decca, and Bobby Sisco recorded rockabilly for Chess. Most notable was the teenage Sherry Lee, who would later become world-famous as Jackie DeShannon. Herbie Duncan, on the other hand, was the best at translating the Mar-Vel concept into songs. His 1958 single ‘Hot Lips Baby’, as you can hear on this compilation, is a wild, uninhibited, and somewhat chaotic rockabilly number, yet highly representative of the genre. The songs that followed this hit were equally intense and raw, earning him cult status as a true rockabilly pioneer. ‘Little Angel’ (the flip side of ‘Hot Lips Baby’) and its successors ‘Escape’ and ‘That's All’ grace this album.
Harry Glenn's musical vision was, in short, phenomenal. Young artists, often working-class, with enormous potential, found a listening ear in Glenn. This resulted in gems of songs, 36 of which made it onto this album.
The authenticity is immediately evident in the opener, ‘Jump Baby Jump’, by Harry Carter of The Rock 'N' Roll Apache. Carter returns later with three more tracks. Jack Bradshaw was originally a country artist. His ‘Naughty Girls’, however, leans more towards rockabilly, though it still bears country influences. A magnificent song with an inspiring guitar solo appears on Bill Ferguson's sophisticated ‘Dark And Stormy’. Glenn's knack for talent is also evident in the recordings of Billy Nix, who delivers a magnificent song with a ripping sax on ‘Moon Twist’. Nix returns later with two more songs, including the formidable, beautifully arranged, and twisting ‘Get With The Beat’.
Blues influences undoubtedly characterize Paul Parker's ‘Rockin' For Goldwater’. Guitar solos are practically obligatory in rock 'n' roll and rockabilly. Mel Kimbrough takes a different approach in ‘Ha, Ha, Hey, Hey’, replacing it with a clever drum solo. The Law Brothers also sound original in ‘Root Beer’. Emotional harmonies, a wonderful twang guitar, and a dose of humor complete the song.
Bill Hall veers more towards honky-tonk in ‘Move Over Rover’, as does Bobby Sisco's ‘Honky Tonkin' Rhythm’. Hall later delivers the cool riff-driven ‘I Need Some Lovin'‘. Bob Burton adds a touch of country in the steel guitar and fiddle-infused ‘Tired Of Rocking’, while The Gaye Sisters provide beautiful harmonies in ‘Oh Ricky’. Burton also returns with ‘Boogie Woogie Baby’. Country also forms the basis for Jim Gatlin, present here with ‘The Way You're Treating Me’ and ‘Would It Matter At All’. It's once again clear that many independent labels delivered incredibly talented songs. Major labels usually prioritized big profits. While profit is essential to keep things afloat, the potential of young, unknown artists is just as important. And Harry Glenn had this in mind like no other.
As we've come to expect from Bear Family Records, this volume also includes a beautifully designed booklet, complete with rare photos, and all the information about the tracks and artists.
