De kleur ‘roze’ drijft ons nostalgisch naar de helft van de vorige eeuw toen de kleur vrijwel overal aanwezig was. Denk maar aan de Pink Cadillac, de roze accenten in keukens en leefruimtes, allerlei kledingstukken in het roze, roze lipsticks, roze parfums, pink champagne en zo kunnen we nog wel meerdere regels vullen. Kortom het hoorde bij de toch wel romantische stijl van de fifties en begin zestiger jaren.
Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat ‘pink’ ook zijn weg vond naar de populaire muziek. Bear Family Records brengt op dit album maar liefst 30, tussen 1950 en 1962 opgenomen tracks samen, die allen ‘pink’ in de titel dragen. Het is niet alleen leuk om die titels te lezen, nog leuker is om de nummers te beluisteren en jezelf onder te dompelen in de vijftiger jaren toen alles wat nu niet meer kan, nog kon en mocht. Rock-‘n-roll en rockabilly waren alom aanwezig, maar de nummers op deze compilatie bestrijken een breder segment. Zo komen ook de genres rhythm & blues, jazz, pop, exotische geluiden een zeemzoete tienersongs aan bod.
Zo tref je vaak dezelfde titel aan, maar die wordt dan door de desbetreffende artiesten in verschillende stijlen uitgevoerd, namelijk door bekende tot de top behorende artiesten en zij die iets minder bekendheid genoten.
The Tyrones mogen de spits afbijten met ‘Pink Champagne’, een nummer van de jumpblues legende Joe Liggins. The Tyrones brengen de song in een hels jumblues tempo. In een iets rustigere versie presenteren vibrafonist Lionel Hampton en zijn orkest, met zang van The Hamptones, het nummer later op het album. En ook nog een derde maal krijg je ‘Pink Champagne’ in een eerder rockende rhythm & bluesversie van saxofonist Rusty Bryant and The Carolyn Club Band.
Een andere song die je in twee versies krijgt, is het door Lee Hazlewood en echtgenote Naomi Ford gecomponeerde ‘The Pink Panther’. Een eerste maal, in een rhythm & bluesversie krijg je het aangeboden door de vocale groep The Tads. Gitarist Al Casey verpakt dezelfde song dan eerder in een goed passende rockabillyoutfit.
Nummers met ‘Pink Cadillac’ als onderwerp zijn maar liefst met vier aanwezig. Twee daarvan zijn van dezelfde auteur, namelijk Sammy Masters. Die brengt samen met His Rocking Rhythm het nummer in een schitterende rockabillyversie. Rusty Draper samen met David Carroll en zijn orkest wagen zich aan hetzelfde nummer en geven het eenzelfde rockabilly touch.
Voor een jazzy touch skip je naar het instrumentale ‘Sherry Pink’ van Vido Musso en zijn orkest. Nog meer instrumentaal werk dat zich ietwat in hetzelfde genre bevindt, komt er met het burlesque klinkend ‘Perfume and Pink Chiffon’ van Sonny Lester & His Orchestra. Een andere legende, namelijk saxofonist Earl Bostic is van de partij met het door scheurende sax overgoten instrumentale ‘Pinkie’.
Sfeervol en romantisch zijn dan weer adjectieven die toepasselijk zijn op ‘Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom  White’ door Georgia Gibbs en het orkest van Glenn Osser. Dat geldt trouwens ook voor het in ‘Aloha style’ instrumentaal gebrachte ‘Pink Hawaii’. Uitvoerders zijn de getalenteerde gitarist Billy Mure, vergezeld door The Islanders.
Dit album herbergt de meest diverse genres. Zo kan je ‘A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation)’ moeiteloos onder de pop catalogeren.
Vele artiesten maakten destijds opnames voor Sun Records, maar niet iedereen kom wereldwijd bekendheid genereren. Zo eentje was O.C. Holt, die zich op een rockabilly manier door ‘Pink Wedding Gown’ werkt.
‘Sixteen Tons’ maakte Tennessee Ernie Ford op slag beroemde. Hier hoor je hem in ‘Pretty Little Pink’ dat ietwat aan zijn grote hit doet denken.
Roze was overal te vinden, zoals blijkt uit de tienerpopsong ‘Pink Shoe Laces’ van Dodie Stevens, gebackt door Bobby Hammack en zijn orkest. Tussen haakjes, Dodie Stevens was amper 12 jaar oud toen zij in 1958 het nummer opnam.
Johnnie Ray is alom gekend. Met begeleiding van Ray Conniffs orkest en The Ray Conniff Singers zet hij een tearjerker van formaat neer in ‘Pink Sweater Angel’. Er volgen trouwens nog bekende artiesten. Zo tekent ook Carl Perkins present met de prima rockabillytune ‘Pink Pedal Pushers’, net zoals ook Eddie Cochran met ‘Pink Peg Slacks’. Jerry Lee Lewis brengt Perkins’ ‘Pink Pedal Pushers’ trouwens ook nog op de door hem gekende manier. Knappe rockabilly serveren ook Jerry Dove and His String Busters in ‘Pink Bow Tie’, inclusief uitermate smaakvol gitaarwerk.
Rockabilly van het allerbeste soort komt er vanzelfsprekend met Sonny Fisher en zijn eigen compositie ‘Pink And Black’. Opvolger Gene Vincent zet samen met His Blue Caps het rockabillyfeestje verder met ‘Pink Thunderbird’, meteen de laatste track van deze compilatie.
‘The World Is Pink’ katapulteert je gedurende ruim 70 minuten in de ‘roze wereld van de jaren ‘50’. Echter opgelet……geen alcohol nuttigen bij beluistering, of je zou bezoek kunnen krijgen van ‘pink elephants’.

The color ‘pink’ takes us nostalgically back to the middle of the last century, when the color was present virtually everywhere. Just think of the Pink Cadillac, the pink accents in kitchens and living spaces, all kinds of pink clothing, pink lipsticks, pink perfumes, pink champagne, and we could fill several more lines. In short, it was part of the decidedly romantic style of the fifties and early sixties.
It is therefore not surprising that ‘pink’ also found its way into popular music. On this album, Bear Family Records brings together no fewer than 30 tracks recorded between 1950 and 1962, all of which had ‘pink’ in the title. It is not only fun to read those titles; it is even more fun to listen to the songs and immerse yourself in the fifties, when everything that is no longer possible today was still possible and allowed. Rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly were omnipresent, but the songs on this compilation cover a broader segment. Thus, genres such as rhythm & blues, jazz, pop, exotic sounds, and sugary sweet teen songs are also featured.
For instance, you often encounter the same title, but it is performed in different styles by the respective artists namely, by well-known top artists and those who enjoyed slightly less fame.
The Tyrones kick things off with ‘Pink Champagne’ a track composed by jump blues legend Joe Liggins. The Tyrones perform the song at a hellish jump blues tempo. Later on the album, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton and his orchestra, with vocals by The Hamptones, present the song in a slightly calmer version. You also get ‘Pink Champagne’ a third time in a more rocking rhythm & blues version by saxophonist Rusty Bryant and The Carolyn Club Band.
Another song you get in two versions is ‘The Pink Panther’, composed by Lee Hazlewood and his wife Naomi Ford. For the first time, it is presented to you in a rhythm & blues version by the vocal group The Tads. Guitarist Al Casey then wraps the same song in a well-fitting rockabilly outfit.
There are no fewer than four songs featuring the ‘Pink Cadillac’. Two of these are by the same author, namely Sammy Masters. Together with His Rocking Rhythm, he performs the song in a brilliant rockabilly version. Rusty Draper, together with David Carroll and his orchestra, tackles the same track and gives it the same rockabilly touch.
For a jazzy touch, skip over to the instrumental ‘Sherry Pink’ by Vido Musso and his orchestra. Even more instrumental work in the same genre comes with the burlesque-sounding ‘Perfume and Pink Chiffon’ by Sonny Lester & His Orchestra. Another legend, saxophonist Earl Bostic, is present with the instrumental ‘Pinkie’, drenched in wailing sax. Atmospheric and romantic are adjectives that apply to ‘Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White’ by Georgia Gibbs and Glenn Osser’s orchestra. Incidentally, the same applies to ‘Pink Hawaii’, performed instrumentally in ‘Aloha style’. The performers are the talented guitarist Billy Mure, accompanied by The Islanders.
This album features the most diverse genres. For instance, you can effortlessly categorize ‘A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation)’ as pop.

Jerry Dove and His String Busters also serve up fine rockabilly in ‘Pink Bow Tie’, complete with extremely tasteful guitar work. Naturally, rockabilly of the very best kind comes with Sonny Fisher and his own composition ‘Pink And Black’. Successor Gene Vincent, together with His Blue Caps, continues the rockabilly party with ‘Pink Thunderbird’, which is also the final track on this compilation.
‘The World Is Pink’ catapults you into the ‘pink world of the 50s’ for over 70 minutes. However, beware…… do not consume alcohol while listening, or you might receive a visit from ‘pink elephants’. Enjoy!
