Toen in de vijftiger jaren rockabilly in Memphis het levenslicht zag, had waarschijnlijk niemand kunnen vermoeden dat het genre in een mum van tijd heel Amerika en zeg maar gerust heel de wereld zou veroveren. Platenlabels schoten als paddenstoelen uit de grond en probeerden allemaal een graantje van het succes van het genre mee te pikken. Niet alle labels slaagden daar met vlag en wimpel in en sommigen bleven daarom min of meer onder de radar. Dat was het geval voor Nau-Voo Records dat in 1958 in Ohio door Glenn McKinney opgericht werd. Glenn was gepassioneerd door rock-‘n-roll en in de twee jaren dat Nau-Voo en het sublabel Mack bestonden, nam McKinney slechts 10 singles op. Singles die enorm moeilijk te vinden zijn, maar heel erg gegeerd zijn door verzamelaars.
Gelukkig hoef je niet langer hiernaar op zoek te gaan, want Bear Family Records brengt nu een 10 inch vinyl op de markt met de allerbeste nummers.
In het middelpunt van het label stond de in 1940 geboren Billy Adams. Hij was sterk beïnvloed door de Carter Family, Hank Williams en Bill Monroe. Samen met zijn Rock-A-Teers schittert Billy in het met scherpe gitaren opgesmukte ‘That’s My Baby’, alsook in de titeltrack die door de ‘stops’ voor verrassing zorgt. Een pompende bas, prima clean gitaarwerk en in echo gedrenkte vocals maken van Bobby Lawsons ‘Baby Don’t Be That Way’ en ‘If You Want My Love’, toppers zonder meer.
Voor het meer explosieve werk kon het label rekenen op Deacon and The Rock & Rollers. En dat laten ze duidelijk horen in ‘Rock It On The Moon’. Dat ze ook een andere richting kunnen inslaan, bewijzen ze op het country getinte ‘I Don’t Wanna Leave’.
Mooie samenzang tref je dan weer aan in ‘I Didn’t Do It’ van The De Villes en in de doo-wopper ‘Hey Little Girl’ van The Jades.
Instrumentale tracks zijn er ook. Met een schroeiende sax toveren The Untouchables ‘Blue Chip Bounce-part 1’ tevoorschijn. Voor een door gitaren gedomineerde instrumental skip je naar ‘Jim-Jammin’’ van The I-V-Leaguers.
In de prachtige en schitterend geïllustreerde bijlage, krijg je tevens alle info betreffende de artiesten en de tracks.
‘You Gotta Have A Ducktail! Nau-Voo Rockers From West Portsmouth, Oh’ bevat 12 enorm zeldzame tracks. Tracks die niet alleen de rockabilly van de jaren ’50 ademen, maar ook het belang van het slechts twee jaren bestaande Nau-Voo Records terecht in de spots plaatst. Hou je van rauwe, authentieke en energieke opnames, dan hoort dit album zonder meer thuis in je collectie. Het is een regelrechte schande dat deze razend mooie opnames niet op het verhoopte succes konden rekenen.
Aarzel echter niet te lang om deze formidabele uitgave in huis te halen, want deze 10 inch vinyl wordt slechts op 500 exemplaren uitgebracht. Keep on rockin’!

When rockabilly was born in Memphis in the 1950s, probably no one could have predicted that the genre would conquer all of America—and indeed the entire world—in no time. Record labels sprang up like mushrooms, all trying to cash in on the genres success. Not all labels succeeded with flying colors, and some therefore remained more or less under the radar. That was the case for Nau-Voo Records, founded in Ohio in 1958 by Glenn McKinney. Glenn was passionate about rock and roll, and in the two years that Nau-Voo and its sub-label Mack existed, McKinney recorded only 10 singles. Singles that are extremely difficult to find but highly sought after by collectors.
Fortunately, you no longer have to search for them, as Bear Family Records is now releasing a 10-inch vinyl featuring the very best tracks.
At the center of the label was Billy Adams, born in 1940. He was strongly influenced by the Carter Family, Hank Williams, and Bill Monroe. Together with his Rock-A-Teers, Billy shines in the sharp-guitar-embellished ‘That’s My Baby’, as well as in the title track, which provides a surprise thanks to the ‘stops’. A pumping bass, excellent clean guitar work, and echo-drenched vocals make Bobby Lawson’s ‘Baby Don’t Be That Way’ and ‘If You Want My Love’ absolute top tracks.
For the more explosive work, the label could count on Deacon and The Rock & Rollers. And they make that clearly audible in ‘Rock It On The Moon’. They prove that they can also take a different direction on the country-tinged ‘I Don’t Wanna Leave’.
Beautiful harmonies can be found in ‘I Didn’t Do It’ by The De Villes and in the doo-wopper ‘Hey Little Girl’ by The Jades.
There are instrumental tracks as well. With a scorching sax, The Untouchables conjure up ‘Blue Chip Bounce-part 1’. For a guitar-dominated instrumental, skip to ‘Jim-Jammin’’ by The I-V-Leaguers.

Tracks that not only breathe the rockabilly of the 1950s but also rightly put the importance of Nau-Voo Records, which existed for only two years, in the spotlight. If you love raw, authentic, and energetic recordings, this album undoubtedly belongs in your collection. It is an absolute shame that these stunning recordings could not count on the hoped-for success.
However, do not hesitate too long to get your hands on this formidable release, as this 10-inch vinyl is being released in a limited edition of only 500 copies. Keep on rockin’!
