Dit jaar is het precies 50 jaar geleden toen 1968 niet alleen een droevig jaar was in de geschiedenis van het Stax label uit Memphis (ook gekend als Soulsville), maar tevens in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis. Op 10 december 1967 was immers het vliegtuig, met aan boord de veelbelovende Otis Redding, samen met het merendeel van de begeleidingsgroep The Bar-Kays, gecrasht. Slechts één lid van die band overleefde het gebeuren. Otis had net voordien een formidabel optreden gedaan op het Monterey festival, en was een soulster. Het label zat met de handen in het haar, en zocht naar een single om post mortem uit brengen. Dat vonden ze onder de vorm van ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay, met een sound waarin Otis echter ietwat afgeweken was met zijn vertrouwd geluid.
Ondertussen was ook gebleken dat het label in de kleine lettertjes van het distributiecontract met Atlantic Records, hun complete catalogus had weggeven. Beide labels sloegen een andere weg in, maar dat euvel bracht Stax op de rand van het bankroet. En ook bleek dat Sam & Dave slechts voor een tijdje aan Stax uitgeleend waren, en moesten terugkeren naar Atlantic. Op 6 mei 1968 werd Stax dan opgekocht door Gulf and Western’s Paramount Pictures. Komt daarbij nog dat op 4 april 1968, enkele blokken van het Stax gebouw verwijderd, Dr. Martin Luther King vermoord werd. Dat was meteen de aanzet tot heel wat relletjes, waarbij god zij dank, het Stax gebouw gespaard werd. Zangeres Shirley Walton was op datzelfde moment een eerbetoon aan Dr. King aan het opnemen, nl. ‘Send Peace and Harmony Home’, en dat nieuws liet haar wenend achter. The Staple Singers namen in datzelfde dan ‘Long Walk to D.C.’ op, als eerbetoon aan Dr. King’s mars naar Washington. Ze waren toen al actief in de burgerrechtenbeweging. Ondanks alles hield het label stand, en vervolgde met een opvolger voor Sam & Dave, nl. ‘I Thank You’. In de daaropvolgende jaren probeerde men ook muzikaal breder te gaan, zoals met rock en pop, op nieuw daarvoor gestichte labels, zoals Enterprise, Hip, en Arch. En de grote, latere Grammy Award winnaar Isaac Hayes, debuteerde onder zijn eigen naam met ‘Precious, Precious’, later gevolgd door Johnnie Taylor met ‘Who’s Making Love’. En drie nieuwe acts waren blanken, nl. Linda Lyndell, Delaney and Bonnie, en Johnny Daye. Die tumultueuze periode is nu samengevat in een box met een boek en 5 cd’s. Daarop staan niet minder dan 134 songs, waaronder alle A en B-kanten die dat jaar uitgebracht werden, waaronder Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, William Bell, Booker T. & The MG's, Carla Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, Albert King, Isaac Hayes, Linda Lindell, Rufus Thomas en nog veel meer. Het boek telt 56 pagina’s met “liner notes” door historicus Andria Lisle, historicus Robert Gordon en producer Steve Greenberg, opgefrist met tal van zeldzame foto’s uit de Stax archieven.
