The Poodles are a Swedish glam metal band that debuted in 2006 to Top Five success with the smash hit single "Night of Passion" and topped the charts a few years later with "Raise the Banner." Founded in 2005 in Stockholm, Sweden, the band is comprised of Jakob Samuel (vocals), Henrik Bergqvist (guitar), Pontus Egberg (bass), and Christian Lundqvist (drums). They rose to fame in 2006 as contestants in that year's Swedish Melodifestivalen song contest, finishing in fourth place with "Night of Passion." The song was a smash hit, going all the way to number two on the Swedish singles chart. The accompanying full-length debut album, Metal Will Stand Tall (2006), also proved highly successful, reaching the Top Five and spawning the follow-up singles "Metal Will Stand Tall," a Top Five hit, and "Song for You," a Top Ten hit. Second album Sweet Trade (2007) was similarly popular, reaching the Top Ten and spawning the Top Five hit "Line of Fire" (a collaboration with E-Type) and the Top Ten hit "Seven Seas." In 2008 The Poodles topped the charts with "Raise the Banner," a one-off single included on a new edition of Sweet Trade released the same year. Third album Clash of the Elements (2009) continued the band's success, reaching the Top Five and spawning the singles "One out of Ten" and "I Rule the Night."
A young metal band proving their skills! Or: youngsters turning out catchy, mature, energetic material! Whichever way you put it, the result definitely applies to Rebellious Spirit. The hard rock newcomer act from southern Germany, who caused a stir on the scene in 2013 with their debut Gamble Shot, are back again, presenting themselves as even more confident and accomplished on their second album Obsession. The four musicians Jannik Fischer (vocals, guitars), his brother Jens (bass), Silvio Bizer (drums) and Corvin Domhardt (guitar) have recorded twelve new tracks, a full dozen haunting rock numbers which document one thing first and foremost: this quartet has evolved to an amazing degree. “The events of recent years, the production of our debut album Gamble Shot, the shows, the first tour with Axel Rudi Pell, all those things have helped us a great deal,” explains vocalist Jannik Fischer. Obsession sees Rebellious Spirit take the logical second step, going even further in terms of toughness and dynamism. “You’ve got to bear in mind that Jannik was just 15 and I was 18 when we recorded the first demos for Gamble Shot,” Jens Fischer recalls. “Now, three years later, we’re all even better and more accomplished on our instruments, and Jannik’s voice in particular has audibly matured, which of course benefits the new material enormously.” He is referring to compositions such as the title track ‘Obsession’, a wild, almost unbridled midtempo number which sees Rebellious Spirit broach the issue of their experiences in the rock’n’roll industry. Jens Fischer comments: “A little obsession is so important! But mastering that tightrope walk without going crazy is the real achievement.” Having said that, their motto remains: obsession is the law! Their first single release ‘Lost’, a tough, sinister rock song with a quiet verse, a lot of bombast in its chorus and conscious references to Scandinavian acts such as Negative and HIM has turned into a thoroughly convincing number. Just how contemporary Rebellious Spirit have orchestrated their traditional rock sound becomes most evident on ‘Confidence Men’, which the band themselves refer to as “metal riff meets dance beat”, freely admitting to “traces of industrial rock on the side”. ‘Look What I’ve Become’ with its modern beginning and sinister post-grunge influences leaves an equally positive impression. Obsession was recorded at the Cubeaudio studios in Göttingen under the direction of Markus Gumball, who has worked for the likes of Guano Apes and Doro Pesch. Some months before, Gamble Shot had already been cut at Gumball’s hallowed halls, and this time around the producer and arranger found the band, which has gained enormously in terms of independence, imagination and skill, even more motivated. There can be no doubt: these young musicians offer an even broader range and have evidently benefitted from the countless concerts and festival appearances between the release of their debut recording and their work on Obsession. This band has come of age, and their twelve new songs can attest to that. Rebellious Spirit has already played over 150 shows all over europe including a tour with Axel Rudi Pell. They shared stages with bands such as Europe, Accept, Lordi or Alice Cooper and always impressed the audience with their powerful live show. Without a doubt: This band has evolved and their career has just begun!
