Mick Hucknall levert eerbetoon aan Bobby “Blue” Band
Nieuwe solocd op komst.
De Britse zanger Mick Hucknall van de groep Simply
Red, heeft een nieuw soloalbum opgenomen dat een
eerbetoon is aan de muziek van de Amerikaanse soul
& bluesartiest Bobby “Blue” Bland.
Die cd gaat ‘Tribute To Bobby’ heten,
en zal op zeventien juni bij Rhino Records
uitkomen.
Mick verduidelijkt: “His music has this
sophistication to it, a jazz tinge. There's also
the darkness of his lyrics -- Bobby sings with a
really twisted pain and sorrow. He's one of the
vocalists who influenced my singing style long
before I became a slave to pop success.”
‘Tribute To Bobby’ bevat
Hucknall’s versies van de hits uit de jaren
vijftig en zestig, zoals ‘Farther Up The
Road’, ‘Stormy Monday Blues’,
‘Chains Of Love’, ‘I Pity The
Fool’ en ‘Cry, Cry, Cry’.
Bland, die belangrijk was voor zijn soulvolle stijl
met een gospelkantje, werd opgenomen in de Rock
& Roll Hall Of Fame in 1992, en verdiende een
Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.
Deze cd is de eerste release voor Hucknall, sinds het bericht dat zijn groep Simply Red in 2009 zal opgedoekt worden, na een vijfentwintig jarig bestaan. Hun recentste cd ‘Stay’ zal de laatste worden, en de groep zal uiteengaan nadat ze een reeks optredens afgewerkt heeft. ‘Stay’ werd via het eigen label van de groep uitgebracht. Hucknall legt uit: “I somehow now feel a lot more liberated in what I feel able to express. I don't really feel the mass media interest like I had, I got into a kind of a rut with the big company. I was so obliged to sort of deliver in a commercial sense, you kind of can't see the wood for the trees.”
