Earl Klugh bij President Bush
Een avond in het Witte Huis in het teken van jazz
Vorige maand bracht smooth jazz gitarist Earl Klugh
het Amerikaans volkslied tijdens een wedstrijd van
The Detroit Pistons. En aansluitend daarop was hij
uitgenodigd om op te treden in het Witte Huis in
Washington. President Bush luisterde naar het
liedje ‘It’s Time for Love’
tijdens een avonddiner in het Witte Huis dat in het
teken stond van Amerikaanse jazz. Hij toostte en
zei: “The story of jazz mirrors the story of
our nation as it was born from songs of African
slaves and it later absorbed the waltzes of
European immigrants. With its spontaneity and
energy and innovation, jazz expresses the best of
America’s character. And through its role in
fostering freedom and equality, jazz reflects the
best of America’s ideals. Over time, jazz
helped break down barriers of prejudice between
blacks and whites—and even defined an age
that brought new liberty to America’s
women.” Er waren zo’n tweehonderd
gasten in de East Room aanwezig. Vooraf zong
zangeres Esther Williams dus ‘It’s Time
for Love’ en ‘Here’s to
Life’. Zij werd begeleid door saxofonist
Davey Yarborough en anderen. Na het diner was het
de beurt aan Earl Klugh. Hij bracht drie songs ten
gehore. Die heeft net een nieuwe cd uit, ‘The
Spice of Life’. De single daaruit,
‘Driftin’’ doet het niet alleen
goed op iTunes Jazz songs, maar staat ook nummer
één op de R&R Smooth Jazz Indicator airplay
lijst.
