Er staat bij NuGroove Records een nieuwe cd op stapel van saxofonist Michael Lington. Elf jaar geleden, bij zijn aankomst in de USA in 1997, tekende Michael bij dit label. Sindsdien zijn er wat moeilijkheden bij het label geweest, en Michael verliet het, tot David Chackler (oprichter van de oorspronkelijke firma) in 2007 de rechten verwierf om deze naam weer te gebruiken. Nu staat Michael weer onder contract bij hem. “It's great to be back at NuGroove. The label is on the cutting edge of the trends in the industry and believes in creating viable artistic partnerships by allowing the artists the freedom to do what they do best - create great music.”

Greg Philinganes, bekend van zijn werk met Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson en Toto, is aangeduid als uitvoerend producent. Verder zullen o.a. op het album meespelen: de Braziliaanse gitarist Torcuato Mariano, de legendarische drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (die al speelde met Sting, Chick Corea, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock), en bassist Neil Stubenhaus (die al speelde met Barbra Streisand, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones, Vince Gill, Lee Ritenour, Kirk Whalum).

Op zijn zesde cd zal origineel materiaal staan met snuifjes jazz, Braziliaanse muziek en R&B. Het zal een internationaal album worden, volgens Michael. “Right now, I've got my producer in Southeast Asia and we're flying up Torcuato Mariano from South America to play on my album. It's tough coordinating all of this with the various time zones, but it'll be worth it.”

A&R man Pete Ganbarg (die verantwoordelijk is voor multiplatina megahits met Partners in Kryme, Santana’s ‘Supernatural’, Run DMC, Chaka Khan, America, Keb Mo’, Daughtry, Taylor Hicks, Kelly Clarkson, Kenny G en Aaron Neville voor Epic, Arista en zijn eigen Pure Tone Music A&R consulentenbureau) werd eigenhandig gekozen door David Chackler bij NuGroove Records, om zijn steentje bij te dragen.

“There's something very special about this project that's different than all of my other albums.” onthulde Michael tijdens een gesprek. “Most of the time, things start like any place - some folks are late, people yell and joke around, but Vinnie had just gotten back from a six-week tour with Herbie Hancock (who had just won the Grammy for Best Album of the Year) and had felt bad that they had forgotten Herbie's birthday two days before our recording sessions began on April 14th. Greg (Phillinganes) had also worked with Herbie in the past and wanted to do something special.  So Vinnie got Herbie on the phone and asked if he had a moment.  Herbie said 'sure,' and Greg slid over to the piano and played 'Happy Birthday' for Herbie - but playing it jazzed up, sounding just like Herbie would've played it.  We all stood around, mesmerized as Greg is the perfect mimic and absolutely nailed Herbie's 'sound,' and this is how we began our recording session.  It was just a brief moment in time, but it was incredible.”

Anderzijds was donderdag twintig maart jongstleden een belangrijke dag voor Michael. Samen met zesduizend en zeven immigranten uit meer dan honderd twintig verschillende landen verkreeg hij het Amerikaans burgerschap. Dit is voor hem een droom die waarheid wordt. “I first arrived in the US in September 1990. [While my heritage] will always be a big part of me, becoming a US citizen is a milestone in my journey and I am happy and excited about my future as an American. Growing up in Europe in a wonderful city like Copenhagen is an experience I treasure. Then, having an amazing adult life and career in the United States makes me feel like I have been given the greatest gift - the best of both worlds.”
