Veteran country and pop performer Billy Joe Royal passed away in his sleep unexpectedly earlier today (Oct. 6) at his home in North Carolina. He was 73 years old.
Royal was born April 3, 1942 in Valdosta, Georgia. He grew up just north of Atlanta. However, it was a move to Savannah that helped him to become known as a performer, gaining a huge following at the Bamboo Ranch. Close to 2,500 people each night would flock to the club to see Royal and others perform. It was there that Royal would become friends with Roy Orbison, who gave him encouragement to pursue his dream as an artist.
Royal’s career path took him to Columbia Records, where he released “Down in the Boondocks” in 1965. The song peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the Joe South composition helped him to become a star. In a 2010 interview, Royal recalled the first time he heard the song on the radio. “I was living in Cincinnati, Ohio at the time, and a radio friend of mine named Dusty Rhodes played the record. There was no feeling like it. It was an amazing feeling, and led to a great career.”
The singer’s subsequent hits included “I Knew You When” and “Cherry Hill Park,” which became his final Top-40 on the pop charts in 1969. Royal would leave Columbia for stints on smaller labels in the 1970s, eventually landing on Mercury Records, for whom he released a self-titled album in 1980.
However, it was another five years until Royal tasted career success again, signing with Atlantic Records in Nashville. His first release for the label, “Burned like a Rocket,” was sent to radio in the latter part of 1985. The track was rapidly climbing the country singles chart, and had just entered the top ten in January 1986. Then, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded, and due to the title of the song, the release began to fall quickly back down the chart.
“We thought we had a number one record. It was selling so well,” Royal recalled. “I remember that I was in (producer) Nelson Larkin’s office watching TV, and we saw the shuttle go down. For some reason, it didn’t dawn on me that it would affect my record, but radio dropped it like a hot potato.” But, it wasn’t the end of his country career. “By that time, it was in the top ten, so the song really led to a great period for me.”
His next fourteen single releases hit the country charts, with the biggest being his cover of “Tell It Like It Is,” which hit No. 2 in 1989. Royal’s 1987 album The Royal Treatment earned him a Gold certification, as well. The singer credited great songs – and his producer for his career renaissance. “Nelson was such a great producer, and we had great musicians. I was on Atlantic Records, and they were really behind me, as was everyone at radio. We had a really great run.”
Some stated that Royal had “gone Country,” but the singer said he really didn’t feel as if his music had changed at all. “Burned like a Rocket’ was something like I would have cut back in the 1960s,” he said. “All of the songs were like that. I actually didn’t change what I did stylistically at all.”
Another key element to Royal’s comeback was his use of music videos, especially “I’ll Pin a Note on Your Pillow,” which topped the CMT playlist for months in 1987-1988. “Back then, videos were everything. You could put a face with a song. People hadn’t seen me in years, and they probably thought I was on a walker. It was important to show people that I was still around,” he joked.
Royal’s final charted single was 1992’s “I’m Okay (And Gettin’ Better),” which peaked at No. 51 on the Country Airplay chart. Royal’s most recent project, His First Gospel Album, was released in 2009. Over the past few years, the singer had toured extensively with other popular performers from his era, such as B. J. Thomas. Among the participants is the all-girl alt metal Canadian quartet Kittie who expressed a sentiment shared by many of the artists here, “We are so excited to be able to contribute to this amazing tribute album. ‘Space Oddity’ is arguably one of David Bowie's most well known songs so we put all of our efforts into doing all of its intricacies justice, while still retaining our signature, heavy sound.’ Meanwhile, Detroit’s own Electric Six made no bones about their preferred Bowie era, saying “We had to do ‘80s Bowie because frankly, we couldn't trust the earlier Bowie. And the ‘90s Bowie is, well…So ‘80s Bowie was the one for us, and ‘Blue Jean’ was just sitting there waiting for us to club the shit out of it, and, man, did we club it!” Similarly, Zach from Rogue Wave had this to say of “Modern Love,” the song that opens the album, “My favorite Bowie song from his tailored suit era. All that uptempo beat and those chugging horns couldn't hide the sadness of what it means to come down to earth.”
Jared Artaud from The Vacant Lots succinctly expressed the challenges of approaching Bowie’s music, “It’s hard to touch Bowie. He’s an architect. What he’s done, you can’t make it better, so we wanted to reconceptualize it & approach the song from another point of view.” And The Tulips offer this entirely accurate description, “Covering a Bowie tune was like jumping into a cab and realizing there's a tiger sitting shotgun, and no one says a word.” A wild ride indeed! And fans of Bowie will find this collection of covers equally as thrilling!

‘Roger Waters The Wall’, een film van Waters en Sean Evans, is niet enkel een concertfilm maar ook een documentaire over de oorlog en over verlies. De film bevat opnames van de uitverkochte ‘The Wall Live tour’ en biedt ook een unieke kijk op hoe Waters zijn oorlogsverleden onder ogen komt. Geoff explains, “We all kept getting better, the songs kept evolving, we found our sound. My last project 'Hollow' was not road tested, we went into the studio with a handful of songs and just did it. During that process, I established a relationship with our producer, Andrew Bazinet, who pushed me harder as a singer as I've ever been pushed which was apparent during this new record. Andrew said, 'I didn't have to tell you (Geoff) to push yourself to add character, you already had it.'”
Jake Lentner (Lead guitar) earned the studio nickname "One Take Jake" from his efficient guitar tracking. This nickname was in addition to the already established nicknames "Robot" and "Rainman" summarizing his insane playing skills and music memory. Says Geoff, “I always threaten to approach him with a giant magnet to determine if he is human. He absolutely shredded it." Underneath everything lies the groovy rhythm section of the Ayers brothers (Josh and Dylan). They have been playing music together since they were kids which is apparent in their tight sound. Their brotherly dynamic has influenced the way the entire band works together. The band openly argues and fights (literally and figuratively), then hash it out until they arrive at the best idea of the original issue. Josh is the founder of AyerWaves Media and Dylan is held as one of the best rock n roll drummers in Nashville.

As a self-proclaimed “Rock Fanatic”, Geoff has a wide range of musical tastes: classic rock, folk, progressive, grunge, alternative, pop and modern indie. His biggest influences started with oldies and Motown, but quickly moved to Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, The Beatles, Neil Young and The Beach Boys. By the time he was 13 in 1994, Geoff was just beginning to have his mind blown by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan, while simultaneously being hit with the current movement of grunge and alternative rock, which included Nirvana, Soundgarden, The Offspring, Pearl Jam and STP. He's also influenced by some hip-hop/rap artists such as Eazy-E, Tupac, Snoop Dog, Dre, and Too Short.

Mathew Knowles continues to keep hope alive for a Destiny’s Child reunion, and not only a reunion, but Knowles hopes to take the group’s story to film or TV.
In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Beyonce’s father and former manager revealed he’s in talks with various TV and film companies. Even though the group has now disbanded, contractually, he’s still the manager of the group and has rights to any project under the name and brand.
“I am extremely hopeful that the ladies will come back with an album and a tour. I’m working on a few Destiny’s Child projects right now,” he said. “I’m talking to the film and TV community right now, regarding a Destiny’s Child movie or TV series of some sort. I’m hopeful that within the next two to three years we’ll see something major come from it.”
It was revealed during last year’s Sony email hack that Knowles has been conversing with Sony about an idea for a biopic. He revealed he even has actors in mind for the biopic but kept that info under wraps.
Earlier this year in January, the group’s co-manager Brian K. Moore revealed he’s also planning on doing not one, but TWO biopics based on the girl group that dominated the charts from the late 90s to the early 00s. Moore told Madame Noire that there’s interest in two films, one focusing on the original members of Girls Tyme/Destiny’s Child as children, and another on Andretta Tillman, an ex-co manager who passed away from lupus, and the adult management of the group.

Op het album ‘Alles Is Anders’ staan veertien nieuwe liedjes met gastbijdragen van onder meer twee zoons, een dochter, rapper Typhoon, zangeres Shirma Rouse en Guus Meeuwis. Het album is extraverter en ook warmer dan zijn voorganger te noemen. Met meer ruimte voor elektrische gitaren, warme soul-klanken en zelfs een verwijzing naar het reggae-verleden met de band Doe Maar. Van de liedjes gaat ook een grote betrokkenheid uit. “Ik wil echt iets zeggen in mijn liedjes, meer dan ooit,” zegt Henny Vrienten er zelf over. “Het is niet allemaal even zwaar, maar ook niet al te vrijblijvend. Heel ouderwets wellicht, maar er zit toch ook een protestzanger in mij. Iets dat ik altijd al wilde worden, maar toen zat ‘dat bandje’ er tussen.”
Ook schuwt de zanger opnieuw de zelfreflectie niet. Of het nou een beknopte autobiografie is (‘Spelen Met Vuur’), de rol van de liedjeszanger (‘Vrij’) of zijn definitieve afscheid van het moederland (‘Nooit Meer Naar Brabant’, samen met Guus Meeuwis). De eerste single van het nieuwe album is ‘Hier Is Het Goed’ samen met Typhoon, een uitgestoken hand naar ontheemden die een beter leven zoeken. Henny Vrienten: “Typhoon vind ik een licht. ‘Lobi Da Basi’ is zo ontzettend goed en zijn persoon is heerlijk om mee te musiceren. Ik ben erg blij met het liedje dat we samen hebben gemaakt.”

About Blackbeard's Tea Party
Playing together since the summer of 2009, Blackbeard's Tea Party have become firm favourites on the English folk scene. An independent band with three albums to their name, Blackbeard's Tea Party have also completed a number of successful UK headline tours.
'Reprobates' was produced by Dave Boothroyd at Reel Recording Studios. Barn-storming folk tunes rub shoulders with narrative folk songs, telling dark tales of wicked and nefarious characters.
The album shows off the band's imaginative arrangements, accomplished musicianship and dark sense of humour.
'Reprobates' follows the 2009 mini-album 'Heavens to Betsy'; the band's first full-length album, 2011's 'Tomorrow We'll Be Sober'; and 2013's 'Whip Jamboree' which R2 magazine called "the best party going on five inches of plastic."
The title 'Reprobates' doesn't just give the album its theme. It's also a nod to the band's reputation for musical mischief, frequently breaking folk-rock's conventions. Blackbeard's Tea Party combine fiddle, melodeon and voice with the interlocking grooves of two hand percussionists, a distorted electric guitar, and funk-inflected bass patterns. Though their music often takes traditional tunes and songs as the starting point, it's clear that Blackbeard's Tea Party is not for folk purists.
Theirs is a gutsy take on folk which aims to renounce the trendy twee of bands like Mumford and Sons in favour of folk's darker and more primitive origins, all by way of classic rock, funk and dance music. The resulting arrangements are often quirky and boisterous. This playfulness - along with their anarchic and ebullient stage show - has won Blackbeard's Tea Party a small legion of fans.
Reception for the band has been phenomenal over the last two years: the Huffington Post called Blackbeard's Tea Party the 'THE band to see at Glastonbury 2014' and, after they played to their biggest ever crowd at Fairport's Cropredy Convention, they were overwhelmingly voted the best band of the festival by Fairport Convention fans.
Autumn 2015 sees the band embark on another UK headline tour in support of 'Reprobates', plus Blackbeard's Tea Party are already lining up another string of festivals for summer 2016.

Tommy and Larry first met in 1970 on a basketball court played together in the early 80’s under the name The Phonz, signed to Malaco subsidiary Waldoxy records in 1992 as the Beat Daddy’s, recording at Muscle Shoals with the famed Muscle Shoals Swampers. Creative differences led to their going separate ways. Disaster struck Grisham in 2005. Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast and destroying all of Grisham’s possessions. After months of living in a FEMA trailer, Grisham relocated to Nashville. This tragedy led to a long overdue reconciliation and the scoring the KATRINA based documentary Renaissance Village (www.rvthefilm.com) a gritty look of life living in a FEMA trailer park, a subject Grisham had first hand experience.

Richrath werd 65. Hij was twintig jaar lang, van 1970 tot 1989, lid van de groep die toen nog R.E.O. Speedwagon heette. Daarna probeerde hij het solo, met één album tot gevolg.
Richrath maakte dus de gloriejaren van de groep, de jaren tachtig, mee. REO Speedwagon bestaat nog steeds maar heeft in haar 45-jarige geschiedenis een 25-tal bandleden versleten. Hun bekendste nummer is Keep on loving you uit 1981. Ook Can’t fight this feeling uit 1985 werd een gesmaakte single.

We are sorry to inform SoulTrackers of the death of former Miracles singer and guitarist Don Griffin. The 60 year old Griffin died on Thursday in Denver, Colorado following a tragic car accident.
Don Griffin was the brother of long-time SoulTracks favourite and former Miracles lead singer Billy Griffin, and played a role in the second generation Miracles and their success with more upbeat, harder-edged material such as the #1 hit, ‘Love Machine’. The Baltimore-born guitarist became part of the group’s back up band, the Miracle Workers, while still a teenager, and later became the fifth vocal member of the group, replacing Marv Tarplin.
Following the end of the Miracles’ reign in the late 70s, brothers Don and Billy Griffin continued to write together, working on Billy’s Columbia solo albums in the 80s. Don also became part of the disco group Madagascar, issuing the album ‘Spirit of the Street’ in 1981, before joining Anita Baker’s band for several sold out tours.
He continued to perform with success over the next few decades, and worked with artists ranging from Donna Summer to Lalah Hathaway to Earl Klugh, and also wrote and recorded music, most recently issuing smooth jazz solo music during the past few years.
Mr. Griffin leaves behind his brother Billy and sister Diane, as well as his son Brandon. For music lovers, Don Griffin will be remembered for the key role he played in many of the most memorable songs of the 70s and 80s. He will be missed. (Bron: Soultracks.com)
From the first moment of “Black Mariah,” the lead-off track to the sophomore LP from Fischer's Flicker titled “Fornever and Never”, it's clear that bandleader Scott Fischer is up to something interesting. The grandiose piano, the nimble guitars, the pounding drums - it sounds a bit like a throwback to 70's pop excess. Once the vocals come in, Fischer's decidedly modern pop sensibilities pull everything together in an unexpected way.
If “Black Mariah” is an impressive opening statement, the second track, “Dead To Me”, is the unmistakable sound of a band winning you over. The track's syncopated bounce and Fischer's languid drawl show a genuine love for the piano men of yore, simultaneously creating something as familiar as it is fresh. “Halo of Flies” opens with an eerie, dissonant guitar riff followed by downright pummeling guitars. The Alice Cooper-penned rocker blooms with droning bass, psychedelic guitar effects and Fischer's voice taking on a sneer that is undeniably faithful to the source.
“Mrs. Rogers (& the Land of Make-Believe)” is an unnerving whirling dervish with Middle Eastern roots, “Dancin' Girl” is a smooth R&B jam, complete with a sultry guitar solo, and the title track shows off pianistic prowess before exploding into a Bat Out Of Hell-styled multi-movement epic.
But somehow - despite the completion of such an ambitious album, one showing a depth and range of musicality most artists will never achieve - Fischer still isn't satisfied. “We're actually already halfway complete with the album that will come out next, and we're aiming to have that one released within 12 months,” he said.

Scott Fischer's brain is like a vast musical amusement park and he wants to take us all on a thrilling ride. Fischer's Flicker is the latest brainchild of Fischer, a Chicago native, and marks the next step in a musical evolution that began over 15 years ago. While Fischer's Flicker’s debut album, “Katmandon't” is more mature sounding than Fischer's previous efforts, it stays true to the core of Fischer's music with big melodies and ambitious composition. Fischer’s earlier projects include Deja Voo Doo and it’s ambitious release “Carpe P.M.: Honor Comes Only After Humility”. After a hiatus, during which Fischer honed his skills while touring on the corporate/cover band circuit which included a stint in The Virgin Islands and large profile shows at Summerfest and Vince Lombardi Awards, Fischer returned to his passion for original composition and formed Fischer's Flicker. The band is comprised of Deja Voo Doo alumni including Mario Licciardi and Tim Kubiak on guitar, Turan Yon on bass and Tim Gavin on drums.
Scott explains, “I write about what I’m going through, and I’ve experienced a heck of a lot between 'Katmandon't' and 'Fornever and Never'. The material, overall, is more challenging and I feel that, while it’s not a concept album, there is a definite journey involved.”

Commences with the November 6th release of extended and remastered versions of ‘Face Value’ and ‘Both Sides’
Phil Collins revisits a career that can boast over 100 million sales and numerous worldwide #1 albums with the new ‘Take A Look At Me Now’ retrospective reissue campaign in which all eight of his albums will be issued as extended and remastered editions. The campaign commences with the November 6th release of his 1981 debut album ‘Face Value’ and 1993’s ‘Both Sides’.
Entirely curated and compiled by Collins himself, his idea for the ‘Take A Look At Me Now ’ concept is to examine how his songs have evolved over time, with the majority of the additional content throughout the series focused on live versions of the tracks. By contrasting the original studio versions of the material with later performances, the series demonstrates how Collins’ songs take on a life of their own once they’re freed from the confines of the studio.
The extended versions of the albums will also be completed with carefully selected demos and b-sides.
“I’ve always been quite proud of my demos and have often made them available as B-sides, but with a few exceptions, I have avoided including those on these collections,” says Collins. “Instead, I’ve focused on how nicely the songs developed when played on stage, rather than showing how they originated.”
Each album in the series will be remastered by Nick Davis, who earned a Grammy nomination for Best Surround Sound album for his work on the Genesis ‘1970-1975’ box set. Davis has also worked on all of the Genesis retrospective reissues.
The remaining six albums of Collins’ solo discography will follow in the coming months. They also feature a bold new artwork concept in which Collins’ has recreated his poses from the original album covers with new photography that was shot in the present day.
Initially released shortly after Collins’ 30th birthday, ‘ Face Value’ was propelled to international multi-Platinum status with the help of the smash hit single ‘In The Air Tonight’. Other notable tracks on the album include the follow-up singles ‘I Missed Again’ and ‘If Leaving Me Is Easy’, as well as ‘Behind The Lines’ which was written with Collins’ Genesis colleagues Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford.
1993’s ‘Both Sides’ shares a similarly introspective atmosphere to ‘Face Value ’, and features the Top 10 hit ‘Both Sides of the Story’ as well as further singles in the shape of ‘Everyday’ and ‘We Wait And We Wonder’.
The albums in the series will be available on a series of formats. The 2CD digipak and digital versions feature the remastered album and the additional content, and the 180 gram heavyweight audiophile vinyl format (single LP for ‘Face Value’ / double LP for ‘Both Sides’) features the remastered album as a stand-alone product. CD and vinyl box sets will also be available which compile both ‘Face Value’ and ‘Both Sides’ together with space to complete the collection as the rest of the series is released.
Further plans that will tie-in with the reissue series will be announced imminently.

The Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame will present Quincy Jones with a special honour during its upcoming 2015 La Musa Awards ceremony.
Jones will be the recipient of the Desi Arnaz Pioneer Award, named for the Cuban musician who became popularly known as TV’s Ricky Ricardo. The award was created to recognize trailblazers in contemporary music.
Musician, producer, music mogul and 27-time Grammy winner Jones is most often identified with ‘Thriller’ and known as one of the godfathers of hip-hop. But Q --who counts Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez among his current protégés --has had a long, cool connection to Latin music.
In 1962, Jones released the album ‘Big Band Bossa Nova’, which opens with his song ‘Soul Bossa Nova’. The groovy track would later be adopted as the theme song for the ‘Austin Powers’ movies.
On QuincyJones.com, the 82-year-old music legend explains how he was in Buenos Aires with Dizzy Gillespie’s USO touring band when he met the young Lalo Schifrin, the Argentine pianist and composer who would later write the theme for ‘Mission:Impossible’.
“He told us once you get to Brazil you’re going to see some new music that they’re experimenting with,” Jones recalls in a text on the site. “They call it New Wave, which is what Bossa Nova means in Portuguese. In the beginning they called it jazz and samba.”
Jones describes an afternoon in Rio: “On Copacabana beach, Dizzy asked me to go to the Gloria Hotel,” he remembers. “Dizzy sat in with the house band, a Samba band playing bebop. In the front seats in the audience were Astrud and Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. They were very young.”
Jones included songs by Jobim and Sergio Mendes on ‘Big Band Bossa Nova’, and recruited Schifrin, as well as jazz masters like Clark Terry, Phil Woods, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who plays the familiar flute solo on ‘Soul Bossa Nova’. Phil Ramone was the recording engineer on the album.
The Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame Musa Awards Ceremony takes place on Oct. 15 at the Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater. Emilio Estefan, Gustavo Santaolalla and other songwriters will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during the show. (Bron: Billboard.com)

“I have traveled far from another place…come to learn from your race…” Nik Turner intones at the outset of “Adjust The Future,” the lead off track from his forthcoming space-rock/jazz-fusion magnum opus Space Fusion Odyssey, scheduled for launch on October 16. The track, like the album as a whole, features Turner’s complex, jazzy improvisations on saxophone with support provided by an insanely talented and diverse group of musicians including Steve Hillage and Gilli Smyth of ‘70s prog legends Gong as well as Chris Poland of metal giant Megadeth and Jürgen Engler of German industrial band Die Krupps. The video mixes footage of Turner with some mindblowing experimental video manipulations that harken back to the psychedelic backdrops Turner’s former band Hawkwind would frequently perform in front of.

Symphonic rock icons Renaissance featuring legendary singer Annie Haslam will be performing in the US in the Fall 2015! Renaissance is a band with a rich history unique unto themselves as progressive rock pioneers who rose from the ashes of the seminal UK rock band, The Yardbirds. Acclaimed for their unique blending of progressive rock with classical and symphonic influences, the band's career has spanned forty plus years spearheaded by the 5 octave voice of Annie Haslam and the masterful songwriting skills of Michael Dunford. They are widely considered to be the band that most successfully and routinely utilized the sound of a full orchestra in their recordings.
In the early years Renaissance toured Europe extensively. It wasn’t long before influential progressive rock stations in the US, such as WNEW (NYC), WMMR (Philadelphia) and WHFS (Washington) were turning on America to Renaissance. Before too long the band started thrilling concertgoers on the world’s most distinguished stages, from Carnegie Hall in NYC with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, to the Royal Albert Hall in London with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Chorale Society. In 1978 they had a top ten hit in the UK with ‘Northern Lights’, which has become a classic radio favorite, still demanding regular airplay to this day.
The band eventually disbanded in the late 1980’s at which time Annie Haslam launched a solo career. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the original founding of Renaissance, Michael and Annie in 2009 decided to form a new touring band. More recently they have toured the UK, Belgium, Holland, Israel, Portugal, North America, Canada, Japan and South Korea and produced their first album in 13 years entitled ‘Symphony of Light’. The album is a testament to the unforgettable melodies that Michael Dunford infused into his work, Michael died prematurely in 2012.
Renaissance toured Europe this April, the first in over 35 years! They recorded the London Union Chapel show for a ‘live’ DVD to be released soon! The tour was very successful and the fans loved every minute!

Chrissie Hynde heeft in een interview met The Sunday Times Magazine opmerkelijke uitspraken gedaan over verkrachting. De 63-jarige Hynde vertelt in het interview dat ze op 21-jarige leeftijd met een motorbende naar een verlaten huis werd gebracht, terwijl ze dacht naar een feestje te gaan. "Technisch gezien was het mijn eigen schuld en ik draag die verantwoordelijkheid. Je kunt niet met mensen sollen, vooral niet met mensen die shirts dragen met teksten als 'ik hou van verkrachting' en 'op je knieën'. Het zijn motorbendes, dat is wat ze doen."
De Amerikaanse Hynde, onder meer bekend van de band The Pretenders, gaat in het interview verder en stelt dat als vrouwen schaars gekleed en dronken over straat lopen het aan aan zichzelf te danken hebben als er wat gebeurt.
"Doe dat gewoon niet", zegt ze. "Dat is gewoon gezond verstand. Weet je, als je een verkrachter niet wil verleiden, draag dan geen hoge hakken, zodat je van hem weg kan rennen."
Een Britse organisatie die opkomt voor slachtoffers van seksueel misbruikt spreekt schande van de uitspraken.

Vijf jaar later zou Elvis de kans schoon zien om wraak te nemen op de ondertussen zwalpende Beatles. Op maandag 21 december 1970 wordt hij op de middag immers ontvangen door president Nixon en diens medewerker Bud Korgh. Deze laatste schreef een memorandum over deze bijeenkomst, die er was gekomen nadat Elvis in een brief aan Nixon zijn bezorgdheid had uitgedrukt over waar het met de VS naartoe ging. Meer bepaald baarden “de drugcultuur, de hippie elementen, de radicale studenten, de black panthers, enz.” hem zorgen. Uit het memorandum blijkt dat hij daar tijdens het gesprek met Nixon op terugkwam: “Presley gaf als zijn mening te kennen dat hij dacht dat de Beatles een belangrijke rol speelden in de anti-Amerikaanse krachten. Hij zei dat de Beatles naar dit land kwamen, veel geld verdienden en dan terugkeerden naar Europa waar ze anti-Amerikaanse propaganda maakten.
