Annick Odom Bridges Appalachian Tradition and Contemporary Composition on Linen of Words

Linen of Words places Appalachian ballad tradition in dialogue with contemporary compositional practice. Moving between intimate and maximalist arrangements and compositions, West Virginian performer-composer Annick Odom foregrounds narrative as musical architecture.

Rather than presenting tradition as artifact, Odom frames it as living material that can be handled, reshaped, and in conversation with the present-day. Recorded with a collective of over 20 musicians from jazz, classical, old-time string band, and Sacred Harp communities, Linen of Words reflects both Odom’s broad musical interests and her deep ties to West Virginia traditional music.

Odom’s background spans Appalachian apprenticeship (folklorist and fiddler Gerry Milnes; square dance caller Taylor Runner; ballad singer Phyllis Marks) and contemporary composition. The result is an intimate recording that sits between ballad singing, chamber music, and storytelling worlds.

Annick Odom (she/her)  is a born-and-raised West Virginian, and a Belgian-American performer-composer, multi-instrumentalist, improviser, crankie maker, storyteller, and square dance caller. Listening to her music, described as “hauntingly beautiful” (Classical Post), you will hear Appalachian ballads, experimental composition, and storytelling, and you would be as likely to hear her in a folk string band as in an electro-acoustic duo or a chamber ensemble. In addition to leading her own solo project and playing with regional orchestras, she performs with Pittsburgh-based folk band Wake Robin and Parisian folk band Sweet Joe Pye. A passionate collaborator, she has commissioned over 20 new works for bass, voice, and crankie storytelling through her project West Virginia, My Home.
