NOTHIN‘ BETTER TO DO

BETTY BRYANT is a living legend of the Los Angeles jazz scene. The singer, pianist, and composer has been a vital presence in Southern California since 1955, when she relocated from her hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. There, she was mentored by the late, great Jay McShann, whose influence helped shape Bryant’s blues-rooted approach to both piano and vocals. Now, at the extraordinary age of 96, Bryant releases Nothin’ Better to Do, her 15th album, further cementing a legacy built on swing, soul, and storytelling.

The album follows 2024’s Lotta Livin’, which was met with critical acclaim. All About Jazz praised Bryant’s “rough and edgy voice” and marveled at the strength and vitality of her performances, noting that her piano playing “defies any generational labels.” Affectionately known as “Cool Miss B,” a nickname inspired by a song written for her in the late 1990s, Bryant has cultivated a devoted international following drawn to her authenticity, humor, and deep feel for the blues.

Bryant’s career has taken her far beyond Los Angeles. She has performed throughout the Middle East and Brazil, enjoyed long-running engagements in Tokyo, and appeared at festivals such as the Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival in Panama. At home, she remains a beloved fixture at iconic venues including Catalina Jazz Club where her annual “Betty Bryant Birthday Bash” continues to sell out as well as regular appearances at the historic L.A. Athletic Club and Herb Alpert’s Vibrato Jazz Club.

Nothin’ Better to Do was produced by longtime collaborator Robert Kyle, a saxophonist and flutist who has worked closely with Bryant for more than three decades. The album features a stellar lineup of Southern California musicians and presents a mix of originals and thoughtfully chosen, off-the-beaten-path material. Bluesy, swinging, and richly textured, the arrangements place Bryant’s expressive voice and piano at the center, highlighting both her seasoned artistry and her playful wit.

Despite physical challenges that come with age, Bryant’s musical spirit remains undiminished. Her singing and playing retain their warmth, swing, and emotional depth, reflecting a lifelong devotion to her craft. “I’ve been playing the piano for 90 years,” Bryant says. “It’s a big part of who I am. I still have a lot of music to make.” With Nothin’ Better to Do, Betty Bryant proves once again that her voice and her story remain as vital as ever.
