BARTOK: Where Blues Tradition Meets Modern Sound

Release date: june 5, 2026

Marco Bartoccioni, operating under the name BARTOK, sits at an interesting crossroads within contemporary roots music. He comes from the blues tradition, but treats it less as a fixed form and more as raw material. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has developed a personal language built around lap steel guitar, electric and acoustic strings, and a carefully integrated use of electronics. The result is music that feels grounded and tactile, yet deliberately forward-looking — music that respects where it comes from without being confined by it.

A pivotal moment in the making of this project was deeply personal. During his father’s illness, Bartoccioni wrote a piece that functioned as both a form of communication and emotional grounding. That composition became the axis around which the album slowly took shape. Rather than remaining a single, isolated song, it set the tone for a broader body of work in which memory, resilience, and emotional honesty are central themes. You can hear that intimacy throughout the record: it is restrained where it needs to be, but never distant.

The self-titled album BARTOK consists of eight tracks and marks a clear recalibration of his artistic direction. Sonically, it balances primitive blues impulses, alternative rock textures, and minimalist electronic elements. Guitars are left intentionally raw, while analog synths and subtle processing add depth rather than gloss. This is not nostalgia-driven roots music; it is roots music that has accepted the present moment and learned how to speak its language.

Bartoccioni recorded almost everything himself, reinforcing the album’s cohesive and personal character. The lap steel plays a central role — not as a novelty, but as a lead voice capable of dialogue with modern arrangements and electronic soundscapes. That same approach defines his live shows, where he performs as a power trio, singing and playing simultaneously. It’s a physical, immersive experience that translates the album’s emotional core directly to the stage. Recorded and produced in Italy, with additional mixing in the US and mastering in Nashville, BARTOK ultimately reflects an artist who is deeply rooted, internationally seasoned, and unafraid to redraw the boundaries of what contemporary blues-based music can be.
