Mud Morganfield, the eldest son of blues legend Muddy Waters, proudly releases his latest single, “She’s Getting Her Groove On.” Steeped in the sound of Chicago blues and infused with a modern edge, the track highlights Morganfield’s ability to honor his father’s legacy while carving out his own musical path.

With commanding vocals, a powerhouse horn section, and an irresistible rhythm, “She’s Getting Her Groove On” captures the energy of blues at its most soulful and dance-worthy. The accompanying video follows a story of love, betrayal, and resilience, as Morganfield’s character discovers his partner’s infidelity before reclaiming his confidence and stepping back into the nightclub spotlight.

“We’re excited to share this song from the new album,” says Morganfield. “It’s got funky energy mixed with deep blues. We’re bringing the party to you—from 8 to 80—with a groove that makes you move!”

Recorded at JoyRide Studio in Chicago, Mud Morganfield’s new album Deep Mud delivers real, honest, unvarnished blues from start to finish — just as his father, Muddy Waters, did when he laid the foundation for the electric Chicago blues sound.

“Listen, man, it is Chicago blues. No rock-blues here for Mud,” Morganfield says. “I talk and I sing about real things, real live people, real situations, things that people go through — from falling in love to beautiful women. So, it’s Chicago blues at its best. They ain’t trying to do that no more, but that’s what it is.”

Deep Mud brings together some of Chicago’s most respected musicians: guitarists Rick Kreher (a key member of Waters’ final touring band) and Mike Wheeler; keyboardists Roosevelt “Mad Hatter” Purifoy and Sumito “Ariyo” Ariyoshi; bassist E.G. McDaniel; and drummer Melvin “Pookie Styx” Carlisle. Harpist Studebaker John not only played but also served as producer and arranger, while trumpeter Phil Perkins handled the horn arrangements. The result is a record steeped in Windy City tradition, with grooves that are as tough as they are timeless.

For more than two decades, Morganfield has kept traditional Chicago blues alive, performing both his father’s classics and his own originals alongside top-tier musicians. That deep commitment fuels Deep Mud, an album that leans heavily on original material while staying rooted in the genre’s golden era.

Morganfield’s recording career began in 2008 with his self-produced debut Fall Waters Fall. In 2012, he signed with Severn Records, releasing the acclaimed Son of the Seventh Son followed by For Pops—A Tribute to Muddy Waters (2014), a collaboration with harmonica legend Kim Wilson. His 2018 release They Call Me Mud marked his final album with Severn, while 2022’s Portrait was issued by Delmark Records.

Born on Chicago’s South Side to blues matriarch Mildred McGhee and Muddy Waters during Waters’ Chess Records heyday, Morganfield grew up immersed in the music. As a child, he lived in a building owned by the Chess family, where he crossed paths with blues greats like Bo Diddley and Howlin’ Wolf — though at the time, he says, he had no idea who they were.

With Deep Mud, Mud Morganfield continues his mission: to carry on the tradition of authentic Chicago blues while adding his own voice to the story.
