British blues-rock powerhouse Joanne Shaw Taylor returns with a compelling new single, “Hell Or High Water,” released via Journeyman Records.

A defiant blend of blues and gospel-tinged soul, the track captures Joanne at her most emotionally fearless, channelling resilience, faith, and self-belief into one of her most powerful recordings to date. “‘Hell Or High Water’ is about surviving the war inside your own head and refusing to give in,” Joanne explains. “It’s a song about resilience and self-belief, even in the hardest of times.”

From its stark opening to its hypnotic, rolling groove, “Hell Or High Water” unfolds with a palpable sense of tension and release. Joanne’s raw, blues-soaked vocal performance confronts doubt, temptation, and perseverance head-on, with lyrics such as “Devil on my shoulder keeps whispering in my ear” and the repeated plea “Lord, don’t let me falter” framing the song as a deeply personal reckoning rooted in honesty rather than gloss.

Despite its darker emotional undercurrent, the track remains instantly infectious. Handclaps, a driving rhythmic pulse, and a hook that lingers long after the final chorus give the song undeniable momentum. Joanne’s searing guitar work cuts through with clarity and conviction, while a solo rich in grit and grace reinforces her reputation as one of the most formidable blues guitarists of her generation.

The release follows an exceptionally prolific period for Joanne. Over the past year, she unveiled her acclaimed album Black & Gold, along with a Deluxe Edition featuring stripped-back acoustic versions of fan favourites including “Hold Of My Heart,” “Grayer Shade Of Blue,” and “Black & Gold.” The album received widespread critical praise, with Classic Rock awarding it 9/10, Powerplay Magazine highlighting its “pop appeal and smoothness,” Guitarist Magazine noting that it “reinforces Joanne’s place in the firmament of today’s brightest stars,” and American Blues Scene calling it “a deeply personal experience, showcasing the depth of Joanne’s artistry.”

“Hell Or High Water” offers a first glimpse into a new chapter of material set to emerge over the coming year. While firmly rooted in the blues traditions that define her sound, the song reflects an artist continuing to evolve embracing vulnerability, pushing creative boundaries, and standing unwavering in her strength.
