This fall, Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska will be revisited with more context and depth than ever before through the release of a five-disc box set packed with unheard and long-lost material. Titled Nebraska ’82: Expanded Edition, the collection arrives Oct. 17 via Sony Music and features the legendary “Electric Nebraska” sessions with the E Street Band, solo outtakes from the same period, a newly filmed front-to-back performance of the album, and a freshly remastered 2025 edition of the original record. Together, these elements offer an unprecedented window into the sonic world behind one of Springsteen’s most unlikely lo-fi creations—now recognized as a timeless classic.
As a first taste, today’s preview spotlights a never-before-released version of Born in the U.S.A., written during the Nebraska sessions. Recorded in April 1982 with Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent, the stripped-down trio performance showcases a rawer, edgier side of the song. “We threw out the keyboards and played basically as a three-piece,” Springsteen recalled. “It was kinda like punk rockabilly. We were trying to bring Nebraska into the electric world.”

Alongside Electric Nebraska featuring Garry Tallent, Max Weinberg, Danny Federici, Roy Bittan, and Stevie Van Zandt—the box set also highlights a wealth of solo rarities under the banner of Nebraska Outtakes. These include additional songs from the original home demos (“Losin’ Kind,” “Child Bride,” “Downbound Train”) as well as material from a one-off 1982 solo studio session (“Gun in Every Home,” “On the Prowl”). Rounding out the package is a brand-new performance film, shot by Thom Zimny at New Jersey’s Count Basie Theatre, in which Springsteen plays Nebraska in sequence for the very first time. More than 40 years after choosing not to tour the album, he revisits the songs with renewed perspective. “I think in playing these songs again to be filmed, their weight impressed upon me,” Springsteen reflected. “I’ve written a lot of other narrative records, but there’s just something about that batch of songs on Nebraska that holds some sort of magic.” Just a week after the set’s release, 20th Century Studios will bring the feature film Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere to theaters on Oct. 24. Directed by Scott Cooper and adapted from Warren Zanes’ acclaimed book, the film chronicles the making of Nebraska with Jeremy Allen White starring as Bruce Springsteen and Jeremy Strong as longtime manager and producer Jon Landau. The cast also includes Stephen Graham, Odessa Young, Paul Walter Hauser, Gaby Hoffmann, Marc Maron, and David Krumholtz.
