Canadian roots, rock, and soul powerhouse Bywater Call return with their second studio single of 2025, “Ain’t No Friend of Mine.”

A ripping, rootsy blues-rock anthem about betrayal and broken friendship, the track channels the raw energy of Gary Clark Jr., The Black Keys, Alabama Shakes, Marcus King, and The Rolling Stones. Driven by a pulsing rhythm section, Meghan Parnell’s smoky, powerhouse vocals, and a searing electric guitar groove, the song captures both grit and emotion in equal measure.

“We wanted to write something bold and confident, mixing traditional blues influences with a modern rock attitude,” says lead singer Meghan Parnell. “The song is about finding strength in acknowledging hurt—letting it out, sharing it, and then letting it go for good. That’s reflected in the gang vocal chorus, which feels freeing and powerful to sing along to.”

Recorded at Palace Studios in Toronto, “Ain’t No Friend of Mine” was captured and mixed by Patric McGroarty and mastered by Kristian Montano of Montano Mastering. The accompanying music video, shot by Zack Murray of Lightning House Media, offers an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the band in the studio, bringing the creative process to life.

The single follows a banner year for Bywater Call, arriving on the heels of their critically acclaimed live album Sunshine (released in August) and their recent single “Hold Me Down” (September). With “Ain’t No Friend of Mine,” the band continues to carve out their signature sound—bold, soulful, and unapologetically alive.
