Cowboy Poet Dallas Burrow Releases New Single Featuring Legendary Songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard21/7/2025
Dallas Burrow proudly announces the release of his new single, “Read ’Em and Weep,” featuring legendary songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard. The track offers a preview of his upcoming album, The Way The West Was Won, set for release on September 26th via Forty Below Records. Texas songwriting legend Ray Wylie Hubbard lends his unmistakable, smoky vocals to Dallas Burrow’s new single, “Read ’Em and Weep”—a gritty poker ballad steeped in the spirit of classic gambling songs by icons like Townes Van Zandt and Hubbard himself. “Read ’Em and Weep” kicks off Burrow’s upcoming album, The Way The West Was Won, with a bold, cinematic flair. The song draws a direct line to Burrow’s earlier co-write with friend Charley Crockett, “The Only Game in Town.” While that song features the line, “The dealer is [his] friend and the house always wins,” Burrow describes this new track as a challenge to that idea. “It opens with, ‘I heard the dealer was your friend, I heard you know him well,’” Burrow explains. “It’s a kind of musical sequel, picking up where the story left off.” Stylistically, both songs pay tribute to storytelling gems like Townes’ “Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold” and Ray Wylie’s “Dust of the Chase.” When Burrow gave Hubbard the full album to preview, this was the track he chose to lend his voice to — a moment that carried deep personal meaning for Burrow. “It was an incredible honor to have Ray Wylie sing the entire second verse,” he says. “He’s always been one of my biggest inspirations and heroes.” Ray Wylie Hubbard, never one to mince words, offers high praise for Burrow: “In this modern time of piss ant singers and so-called songwriters, Dallas Burrow is one of the very few artists who rips off pieces of his soul, turns those pieces into lyrics, puts them to a haunting cool melody or a rocking groove, and will stand back-to-back with you daring the Devil to show up… and the Devil won’t, 'cause he knows he ain’t gonna get Dallas Burrow. His integrity ain’t for sale.” The track begins with Grammy-winning producer Lloyd Maines counting it in and delivering a haunting harmonic guitar intro. As it builds, the song is lifted by Maines’ signature dobro playing and a beautifully layered fiddle performance by Katie Shore, creating a rich, textured soundscape. The Way The West Was Won, recorded in just two inspired days, showcases Burrow’s deep roots as a storyteller. With guest appearances from Ray Wylie Hubbard, Kelly Willis, and Jim Lauderdale, the album paints a vivid portrait of the American West — a world of vaqueros, gamblers, outlaws, and ghosts. It’s a collection made for campfires and trail rides, theatres and festival stages, and channels the spirit of Burrow’s songwriting heroes: Townes Van Zandt, Willie Nelson, and Marty Robbins.
