Dave Specter’s three-decade journey with Delmark Records continues with Live at SPACE—his fourteenth album and a bold new chapter in his storied career.

Release date: june 6, 2025

Born on Chicago’s Northwest Side in 1963, guitarist Dave Specter didn’t pick up the instrument until the age of 18—but he quickly made up for lost time. He began studying under blues veteran Steve Freund, who mentored him while juggling roles at the Jazz Record Mart and Delmark Records. Freund would go on to organize Specter’s first tour, pairing him with blues legends Sam Lay and Hubert Sumlin.

Specter’s time working at Chicago’s famed B.L.U.E.S. nightclub opened doors to performances with some of the genre’s greats, including Johnny Littlejohn, Son Seals, the Legendary Blues Band, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Otis Rush, and Robert Lockwood Jr. Over the years, he has appeared on more than 40 albums as a guitarist or producer.
In 1989, Specter formed his own band, the Bluebirds, and by 1991 released his Delmark debut, Bluebird Blues. By 1998, he had six albums under his belt with the label, drawing inspiration from blues and jazz icons like T-Bone Walker, Pee Wee Crayton, Magic Sam, Otis Rush, and Kenny Burrell.

His Delmark discography includes 2004’s Is What It Is with Steve Freund and Barrelhouse Chuck; the 2008 CD/DVD Live in Chicago featuring Jimmy Johnson, Tad Robinson, and Sharon Lewis; and 2014’s Message in Blue with Otis Clay. His most recent studio album, Blues from the Inside Out, was released in 2019. In 2021, Delmark celebrated his legacy with Six String Soul, a 30-year retrospective.

Specter’s latest release, Live at SPACE, captures his current lineup—Specter on guitar and vocals, Brother John Kattke on organ, piano, and backing vocals, Rodrigo Mantovani on bass, and Marty Binder on drums. The album features seven originals alongside six carefully chosen covers, offering a dynamic snapshot of Specter’s enduring artistry.
