The upcoming five-disc, 41-track box set Antone’s: 50 Years of the Blues—a tribute to the legendary Austin music venue—has been previewed with two exclusive recordings from Gary Clark Jr. and Los Lobos. Drawing on their deep connections to the club’s legacy, both artists have contributed previously unreleased tracks to honor Antone’s 50th anniversary. The full set arrives August 22 via New West Records.

The box set includes three full-length albums, each capturing a different facet of the club’s storied history, plus a bonus 45, rare and unseen photos, an updated hardcover edition of Picture the Blues by Susan Antone, and a newly written definitive history of Antone’s by renowned Texas music historian Joe Nick Patoski.

Gary Clark Jr., who began performing at Antone’s as a teenager, contributes a newly unearthed 2004 live recording of “Catfish Blues.” At just 20 years old and unsigned at the time, Clark played the song during a benefit for Hubert Sumlin, sharing the stage with legends like Double Trouble, James Cotton, and Jimmie Vaughan. The track appears on We Went Live In ’75, a collection of rare live cuts from the club featured in the box set.

Clark recalls, “I was a kid playing guitar with no direction. When I jumped onstage at Antone’s, I felt like I was part of something important. It changed how I saw life and gave me purpose.”

Also featured is Los Lobos’ brand-new studio recording of “Three Hundred Pounds of Joy,” the Willie Dixon-penned Chicago blues classic made famous by Howlin’ Wolf. Though based in Southern California, Los Lobos share a lasting bond with Antone’s dating back to a pivotal moment in 1983, when Clifford Antone helped the band get back on their feet.
“Clifford rescued us when we were stranded in Texas with no way home,” recalls Steve Berlin. “He told us to get to Austin and gave us a week of gigs that made it possible to get back to L.A. This track is our way of saying thanks.”

Derek O’Brien, longtime Antone’s guitarist, adds: “Clifford loved it when Cesar Rosas would do Howlin’ Wolf.”

Antone’s: 50 Years of the Blues features:
  • Three full-length albums: We Went Live In ’75 (live recordings), Tell Me One More Time (lost Antone’s Records cuts), and The Last Real Texas Blues Album (new recordings by key Antone’s artists)
  • Bonus 45 single: featuring Los Lobos
  • Updated hardcover edition of Picture the Blues
  • Rare photos and definitive written history of the club
