Though Gregg Allman’s passing in 2017 left a void in the world of rock ‘n’ roll that can never truly be filled, Gregg Allman Band – One Night in DC, May 15, 1984 offers a powerful snapshot of the artist at a vital moment in his storied career.

Captured live at The Bayou in Washington, D.C., this previously unreleased performance showcases Gregg Allman’s relentless passion and determination to prove that—no matter the obstacles—the road indeed goes on forever. By this time, the Gregg Allman Band had spent over three years tirelessly performing anywhere and everywhere, and it shows. The band had matured into a tight, electrifying unit, with a core lineup featuring Gregg on vocals and Hammond B-3 organ, Danny Toler on lead guitar, his brother Frankie Toler on drums, bassist David "Gregg" Voorhees, rhythm guitarist Bruce Waibel, percussionist Chaz Trippy, and newly added keyboardist Tim Heding, whose presence brought an added layer of musical depth.
With Allman now writing new material alongside the Toler brothers, the band’s sound and setlist had evolved to thrilling effect. From the opening notes of a stirring “Dreams,” the group launches into a dynamic 12-song set filled with fire and soul. Highlights include the swaying, R&B-infused “Sweet Feelin’,” fan favorites like “Yours for the Asking” and “Faces Without Names,” and hard-hitting renditions of Allman Brothers Band classics such as “Hot ‘Lanta,” “Trouble No More,” “Statesboro Blues,” and an explosive “One Way Out” that closes the night to roars from a packed house.

Born on December 8, 1947, in Nashville, Tennessee, Gregg Allman was one of rock’s most revered and influential figures. With his soul-drenched, unmistakable voice and a songwriting style steeped in the American blues tradition, Allman left an indelible mark on the landscape of modern music. From his groundbreaking work with the Allman Brothers Band to his acclaimed solo career, he delivered timeless songs like “Midnight Rider,” “It’s Not My Cross to Bear,” “Dreams,” and “Whipping Post.”

Over the course of his five-decade journey, Allman received numerous accolades, including the Allman Brothers Band’s 1995 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 54th Annual GRAMMY® Awards. He shared his life’s highs and hardships in his 2012 New York Times best-selling memoir, My Cross to Bear, a raw and reflective account of a life shaped by immense talent, personal loss, and redemption.

Gregg Allman passed away on May 27, 2017, due to complications from liver cancer at his home in Savannah, Georgia. Yet his music and spirit endure. In addition to an extraordinary catalog of studio and live recordings, Allman left a lasting legacy of support for future generations of musicians through two scholarship programs: The Gregg Allman Scholarship Fund at the University of Georgia and the Allman/Lehman Endowed Scholarship at Syracuse University.
