Jesper Lindell Channels Memphis Soul on “Sweeter Tomorrow,” Announces New Album Royal Swedish singer/songwriter Jesper Lindell keeps his transatlantic soul journey rolling with a new release: a cover of “Sweeter Tomorrow,” originally recorded by Margie Joseph. The track is lifted from Lindell’s upcoming album Royal, due June 26 via Yep Roc Records, and arrives on the heels of his recent LP 3614 Jackson Highway. The story behind Royal is as compelling as the music itself. In 2024, Lindell and his band, The Brunnsvik Sounds, traveled from Sweden to the American South to immerse themselves in the roots of the sound that shaped him. Recording sessions took place at two legendary studios: Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and Royal Studios. With just two days booked at each location, the band cut enough material for two full albums in only four days. The first result, 3614 Jackson Highway, paid tribute to the Muscle Shoals legacy. Royal, its companion piece, shifts focus to Memphis and the deep, enduring influence of its soul heritage. For Lindell, “Sweeter Tomorrow” stood out immediately: a lesser-known gem that captured the spirit of classic recordings by icons like Aretha Franklin and Etta James. “Doing it with a male vocal, we could stay true to the original—cool and funky as it is—but also push it into a rawer Memphis direction,” Lindell explains. At Royal Studios, the band worked under the guidance of Boo Mitchell, son of the late Willie Mitchell, whose legacy looms large in the city’s musical identity. Stepping into a space largely unchanged since its Hi Records heyday—where artists like Al Green, Ann Peebles, and Syl Johnson recorded—added both pressure and inspiration. Across Royal, Lindell and his band reinterpret songs tied to towering figures such as Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, and Dusty Springfield, while also shining a light on influential but often overlooked writers and performers like Dan Penn, Donnie Fritts, and Tony Joe White. “I know some might think it’s bold to take on songs that already exist in such definitive versions,” Lindell says. “But actually playing and singing them—really digging into the material—was an incredible learning experience. I’m grateful I got to do it, and proud of how it turned out.” Hailing from Ludvika, Sweden, Lindell has steadily built a reputation as a standout voice in modern soul and roots music. From early releases like Little Less Blue to later albums Twilights and Before the Sun, his work blends vintage textures with contemporary storytelling, drawing comparisons to artists such as Van Morrison and The Band—while continuing to carve out a sound entirely his own.
