Joe Martin’s Alone in Valentine: A New Chapter in Modern Americana

Release Date: April 17 2026

21st century troubadour Joe Martin returns with Alone in Valentine, a sweeping second studio album that bridges generations of American songwriting. Rooted in the golden era of ’70s country and folk but stamped unmistakably with Martin’s own voice, the record blends timeless craftsmanship with modern grit.

The album’s lineage runs deep. Recorded at the Campbell residence in Nashville, Tennessee, Alone in Valentine was produced alongside Cal Campbell and Cornelius “Gooseman” Webb — sons of legendary songwriter Jimmy Webb and iconic performer Glen Campbell. With Cal assembling some of Music City’s finest players, the project was cut largely live over seven days, capturing the raw spirit and human chemistry that define the record.

Sonically, the album echoes the storytelling tradition of Tom Petty and Roy Orbison, while sitting comfortably beside contemporary torchbearers like Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, John Paul White, and Colter Wall — artists whose influence can be felt in Martin’s rugged lyricism and emotive delivery.

The story of how the record came together is pure Nashville serendipity. During a 2024 visit, Martin was introduced to Cornelius Webb at the local Wedgewood bar Bastion. After winning a “beer-powered” push-up contest against Webb outside the venue, Martin joined the group for the evening, eventually picking up an acoustic guitar and performing his original song “Man You Need,” now featured on the album. His voice and songwriting left an impression. The next day, Webb introduced him to Cal Campbell — and what began as a chance encounter quickly turned into a creative partnership. When Martin asked if they would help produce his next record, they didn’t hesitate.

The album’s evocative title was born during a co-write with filmmaker and songwriter Steve Anderson, known for his work with Jon Favreau, Sean Bean, Billy Connolly, and for directing the Nashville documentary 10 Year Town. Martin brought Anderson a concept: a lonely woman driving a Silverado from Southern Colorado down through Texas, seemingly fleeing heartbreak. By the final verse, the twist is revealed — she is widowed, retracing the journeys she and her husband once dreamed of taking together, ultimately scattering his ashes along the Rio Grande.

“It was heavy,” Martin recalls, “but then Steve threw out a line that hit me like a train — ‘Tequila in the evening, alone in Valentine.’”
When Martin learned that Valentine was a small town in West Texas, the phrase stuck. “I kept pacing around the room saying, ‘Alone in Valentine… what a great line.’ I knew immediately it had to be the album title.”

What began as a half-joking suggestion to visit Valentine for artwork soon became reality. Embracing a “go big or go home” philosophy, the team drove a weathered Silverado across West Texas from El Paso to Marfa. The album cover was ultimately shot at the Texas Valentine Bar in Valentine — population 73 — grounding the record in the stark, cinematic landscape that inspired it.

Martin describes the guiding principle behind Alone in Valentine as “made by humans, for humans.” Recorded live, without shortcuts or digital trickery, the album embraces an old-school approach at a time when overproduction and AI-generated music dominate much of the industry. The result is something refreshingly organic — honest performances, real instruments, and songs that breathe.

Alone in Valentine isn’t just a collection of songs. It’s a journey across open highways and emotional terrain — a reminder that authentic storytelling and human connection remain timeless. It may be the album you didn’t know you needed, but once it finds you, you won’t want to let it go.
