Kenny Wayne Shepherd Marks 30th Anniversary of Ledbetter Heights with New Recording and Tour1/4/2026
Kenny Wayne Shepherd Marks 30th Anniversary of Ledbetter Heights with New Recording and Tour release date: may 8, 2026 Six-time GRAMMY-nominated, platinum-selling blues-rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd revisits the album that launched his career with a newly recorded 30th anniversary edition of Ledbetter Heights, set for release on May 8. Marking the announcement, Shepherd has also unveiled the lead single “Deja Voodoo.” Originally released during the height of the grunge era, Ledbetter Heights introduced Shepherd as a formidable new voice in blues-rock. With dynamic guitar work, crossover appeal, and a deep-rooted respect for blues traditions, the album connected with a new generation of listeners. Discovered and signed by industry executive Irving Azoff at just 16 years old, Shepherd recorded the project while still in high school, balancing classes in Louisiana with studio sessions in Memphis. Three decades on, Shepherd has evolved from teenage prodigy to established master. The anniversary edition revisits Ledbetter Heights with the perspective of a seasoned artist, preserving the spirit of the original recordings while incorporating a more refined approach to arrangement and tone. “This is the album that put me on the map, and I still enjoy listening to it because my goal has always been to make music I want to listen to,” says Shepherd. “Unfiltered and straight from the heart.” The project reunites Shepherd with longtime collaborator Chris "Whipper" Layton, a founding member of Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, who has been part of the guitarist’s journey since the original sessions. The album is co-produced with Jerry Harrison, continuing a creative partnership that spans multiple releases. In a full-circle moment, Shepherd also returned to his original 1995 guitar rig, reconnecting with the sonic identity that first defined his sound. Upon its initial release, Ledbetter Heights achieved rapid commercial success, earning Gold certification within months and reaching Platinum status by early 1996. The album spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Chart and helped establish Shepherd among the genre’s elite, alongside icons such as B.B. King and Eric Clapton. Notably, Shepherd wrote or co-wrote most of the material—an uncommon achievement for a teenage blues artist—and named the album after a historic neighborhood in his hometown honoring blues legend Lead Belly. In the years since, Shepherd has built one of modern blues-rock’s most enduring careers. His follow-up album, Trouble Is…, marked another major milestone, topping Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart and dominating the Blues Chart for 20 consecutive weeks. Across his career, Shepherd has earned six GRAMMY nominations, multiple Gold and Platinum records, and shared stages with artists including Bob Dylan, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Shepherd’s longevity is underscored by his commitment to artistic evolution. His 12-album catalog, along with collaborative projects such as The Rides with Stephen Stills and Barry Goldberg, reflects a balance between tradition and innovation. Recent releases, including Young Fashioned Ways with Bobby Rush and the genre-spanning Dirt on My Diamonds Vol. 1 & 2, further highlight an artist continuing to expand his sound. The 30th anniversary edition revisits the original 12-track collection with renewed depth and nuance. Whilemaintaining the energy that defined the initial recordings, the updated version showcases a more expressive guitar voice shaped by decades of touring, recording, and collaboration. “Before I could identify with the lyrics, I always could identify with the feeling of the blues,” Shepherd adds. “When you pour your heart out, everyone can feel that.” The release coincides with Shepherd’s ongoing Ledbetter Heights 30th Anniversary Tour, where he performs the album in full for the first time alongside a career-spanning second set. The tour continues to expand across theaters and performing arts centers, with select dates featuring special guests Jimmie Vaughan and Eric Johnson.
