Blues Legend Charlie Musselwhite Shares Soulful New Single "Sad Eyes" from Forthcoming Album Look Out Highway

Grammy-winning blues icon Charlie Musselwhite is proud to unveil “Sad Eyes”, the latest single from his upcoming album Look Out Highway, set for release on May 16th via Forty Below Records. The track premiered exclusively via Glide Magazine and is now available on all streaming platforms.

So, what do you get when you blend the raw spirit of Delta blues, the grit of Chicago, and the soul of Memphis? You get Charlie Musselwhite a true American original. With nearly six decades of songwriting under his belt, Musselwhite continues to craft honest, emotionally rich stories set to timeless blues grooves.

"‘Sad Eyes’ is about a lonely single guy in a club who sees a girl that also looks lonely, with sad eyes. They might not be completely into each other, but hey—why not enjoy each other's company for a little while? It’s not love, but it’s not bad either.”

Musselwhite's music runs deep, like the Mississippi Delta itself. With a sound as heavy as river mud and as bright as a California sky, he has long been recognized as one of the greatest harmonica players of his generation. Far from the fleeting fame of today’s auto-tuned pop, Charlie Musselwhite stands as a true master of American roots music, embodying the blues with every note he sings and every breath he bends through the harp.

Look Out Highway marks a special milestone for Musselwhite it’s the first time he’s recorded with his long-time touring band. Tracked at Kid Andersen's Greaseland Studio in San Jose, California, and Clarksdale Sound Stage in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the album captures the raw energy and tight-knit chemistry that only years on the road together can create.

The band features guitarist Matt Stubbs (of GA-20), drummer June Core (Robert Lockwood Jr.), and bassist Randy Bermudes (James Cotton), with Kid Andersen a longtime collaboratoradding his unmistakable touch. Their cohesion is immediately evident, radiating from the first notes of “Sad Eyes” and carrying throughout the record.

“We finished a gig at The Iridium in New York City and flew straight to California to record,” Musselwhite recalls. “There was no need for warm-ups or rehearsals, we were already locked in. The vibe was just right.”
