Legendary musician Jim Keller returns with three newly recorded ballads, each captured live in an intimate, unfiltered setting.

With a voice that carries the wear of time and the wisdom of experience, Jim Keller returns with Never Got It Straight  a gritty, soul-stained meditation on the beautiful mess of being human. Known for his work as a songwriter, guitarist, and former co-founder of the band Tommy Tutone, Keller has spent decades quietly building a body of work that blends Americana, rock, and roots with unflinching honesty and raw emotion.

On Never Got It Straight, Keller leans into imperfection, delivering songs that feel lived-in and unfiltered. Produced with a minimalist touch and anchored by Keller’s gravel-and-smoke vocals, the album unfolds like a late-night confession  equal parts wry humor, regret, resilience, and grace.

From the opening lines to the closing notes, the record is a testament to the idea that life rarely follows a clean narrative. Whether he’s chronicling missed chances, haunted memories, or hard-earned revelations, Keller writes like a man who’s seen it all and still finds beauty in the fallout.

“Never Got It Straight is about embracing the cracks,” Keller says. “It’s about all the times things didn’t go as planned  and how those moments shape us just as much, if not more, than the wins."

A master storyteller with nothing left to prove, Jim Keller offers listeners a soundtrack for the long road, full of hard truths and unexpected warmth.

“Never Got It Straight” is Keller’s reflective take on love gone sideways  a soul-baring look back at mistakes made and lessons learned. Co-written with Jamie Rubin and recorded in Nashville, the track features Rubin and Audley Freed (Sheryl Crow) on guitars, Yuval Lion on drums, and Joe Pisapia (k.d. lang) on keys, bass, and additional guitar. Pisapia also produced the track, capturing its stripped-down honesty with warmth and grit.

“Breathe It In” finds Keller in more haunting territory, addressing the quiet heartbreak of losing friends to time and fate. Written and recorded in Brooklyn with bassist Byron Isaacs (The Lumineers), the song features Chris Bruce (Meshell Ndegeocello) on guitar, Dan Mintseris (Joe Jackson) on keys, and Yuval Lion once again on drums. Grammy-winning producer Hector Castillo lends his signature touch, giving the track a deep, resonant atmosphere.

“I Could Love You Too” was co-written with Adam Levy (Tracy Chapman) and recorded live at GB’s Juke Joint in Brooklyn. Stripped to its core, the performance highlights the song’s delicate vulnerability and heartfelt delivery.

And just to keep things interesting: none of these three songs will appear on Keller’s upcoming album, The End of the World, due in October. The first single from that album, “Got No Time For That,” arrives August 6 on all major DSPs.
