Legendary singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Taj Mahal has announced the release of his new album Time. Release date May 1, 2026 The album is highlighted by its title track, “Time,” a previously unreleased composition by Bill Withers. The song originated from an unrecorded demo discovered by producer and music executive Steve Berkowitz, who brought it to Taj Mahal with the blessing of Withers and his estate. Reflecting on the connection, Taj Mahal shared his admiration for Withers’ artistry and authenticity, noting the profound emotional impact of his music. “That honesty in his music meant a lot,” Taj said. “When this song came along, I listened to it a couple of times and felt that movement and that message in it. We were grateful to receive his blessing to record it.” Producer Tony Braunagel detailed how the track came together during the album sessions. With guidance from Berkowitz, the team revisited Withers’ demo and immediately recognized its potential. The resulting recording delivers a heartfelt performance that honors Withers’ original vision while bringing new depth through Taj Mahal’s interpretation and the contributions of his collaborators. In a recent interview, Taj Mahal also reflected on his personal encounters with Withers, describing him as a deeply genuine artist whose presence and work left a lasting impression. Originally recorded in 2010, Time features Taj Mahal alongside his longtime backing group, the Phantom Blues Band, including Tony Braunagel (drums), Larry Fulcher (bass), and Johnny Lee Schell (guitar), who also co-produced the album with Berkowitz. Additional musicians include pianist Jon Cleary and organist Mick Weaver. The sessions took place at Ultratone Studio in Studio City, California. The album also includes a rendition of “Talkin’ Blues” by Bob Marley, featuring guest vocals from Ziggy Marley, as well as tracks such as “Wild About My Lovin’” and “You Put The Whammy On Me.” With a career spanning more than six decades, Taj Mahal continues to be a vital force in roots music. In 2025, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and won Best Traditional Blues Album for his collaboration with Keb’ Mo’ on Get On Board.
