 Luther Dickinson Announces Dead Blues Volume 1, Out October 17 on Strolling Bones Records On October 17, Grammy-nominated artist Luther Dickinson will release Dead Blues Volume 1, a powerful new album born from his time with Phil Lesh & Friends, the celebrated group led by the late founding bassist of The Grateful Dead. Known for their genre-defying blend of rock ’n’ roll, jazz, folk, country, gospel, psychedelia, and even reggae, The Grateful Dead also had a deep tradition of unearthing long-forgotten blues and folk songs and reinventing them with their own distinctive touch—often weaving in elements of funk, jazz, and cosmic soul. Phil Lesh & Friends carried this spirit forward, not only performing Grateful Dead classics but also appearing under the name Dead Blues, where they focused exclusively on reimagined versions of these traditional blues and folk treasures. Luther Dickinson was a key member during this era, sharing the stage with his brother Cody Dickinson, Phil’s son Grahame Lesh, and keyboard virtuoso John Medeski. Following Phil Lesh’s passing, both versions of the band came to a natural close, with no plans for a studio recording—until now. The spark came when John Medeski introduced soulful Appalachian-rooted vocalist Datrian Johnson to the Dickinson brothers. Struck by the sheer power and authenticity of Johnson’s voice, they brought him straight into the studio, setting the stage for what would become Dead Blues Volume 1. The album features an all-star lineup: Luther Dickinson (bass, guitar, keyboards), Datrian Johnson (vocals), Cody Dickinson and Rayfield “Ray Ray” Holloman of North Mississippi Allstars, Paul Taylor of New Memphis Colorways, and Steve Selvidge of The Hold Steady.
