Lynyrd Skynyrd Reveal Unheard Material from the Gary Rossington Era

Lynyrd Skynyrd fans have reason to get excited. The legendary Southern rock band has uncovered a hidden musical treasure: around thirty previously unheard songs written with the late Gary Rossington, the group’s final surviving founding member, who passed away in March 2023.

Guitarist Rickey Medlocke and frontman Johnny Van Zant recently shared the news, describing the emotional discovery and hinting at the possibility of new releases created in honor of their longtime brother-in-arms. For fans, it’s a powerful reminder that Gary’s spirit and music still live on.

The discovery happened purely by chance. Shortly after Rossington’s passing, his wife handed the band a box of cassette tapes containing unfinished songs and demos. “We found about 30 songs that Gary worked on with Johnny and me,” Medlocke explained. The tapes capture deeply personal moments from the songwriting process, including Rossington discussing lyrics, melodies, and song ideas.

Johnny Van Zant says the band feels a strong responsibility to share this music. “We don’t know exactly what the future holds,” he said, “but we’d really love to bring these songs to the fans.” The band recently paid tribute to Rossington with Celebrating 50 Years – Live At The Ryman, a live album documenting his final performances with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Rather than rushing out a traditional album, the band is considering a more modern, fan-friendly approach. Medlocke has suggested releasing the songs one at a time, allowing fans to experience each track and react to it individually. “I like the idea of letting one song breathe before moving on to the next,” he said.

If completed, the project would mark Lynyrd Skynyrd’s first studio recordings since Last Of A Dyin’ Breed in 2012—ending a wait of more than twelve years for new material.
Gary Rossington’s legacy looms large over the band’s history. As a survivor of the tragic 1977 plane crash, he remained the heart and soul of Lynyrd Skynyrd for decades. His passing at age 71 marked the end of an era, but not the end of the music. With the blessing of the founders’ families, the band continues forward. “It was never about one person,” Medlocke said. “It was about the music these guys made.”

True to that promise, Lynyrd Skynyrd keeps rolling on still touring and preparing for a run of shows with Foreigner in the summer of 2026. And now, with these lost songs waiting to be heard, fans may soon get one more chance to hear Gary Rossington’s guitar speak again.
