Award-Winning Artist Matt Andersen Urges Us to Rise Above Negativity on Soulful New Single "WayAheadAya"
Upcoming Album The Hammer & The Rose Arrives April 25 via Sonic Records

Acclaimed Canadian artist Matt Andersen has unveiled his latest blues-infused single, WayAheadAya, from his forthcoming album The Hammer & The Rose.

The song’s live performance video, filmed in a cozy coffee shop/record store in Halifax, Nova Scotia, captures Andersen’s raw, soul-stirring vocals as he delivers a powerful message about rising above negativity. Backed by a tight, dynamic band including Afie Jurvanen (guitar) and Christine Bougie (lap steel) from Bahamas, Chris Kirby (keys), Kyle Cunjak (acoustic bass), and Joshua Van Tassel (drums)—the performance exudes a thick, purposeful groove.

“At its core, this song is about not wasting energy on people who don’t have your best interests at heart,” says Andersen. “Some folks thrive on discouragement and negativity it’s a sad situation. But their misery doesn’t have to be yours. The best thing you can do is move forward and leave it behind.”

The Hammer & The Rose marks Andersen’s most intimate and nuanced work to date. Known for his powerhouse vocals and electrifying stage presence, he takes a more understated approach on this album, exploring the depth of his lower register and the emotional weight of his delivery. The result is a captivating 10-track collection that blends folk, blues, and Americana, wrapped in warmth and authenticity.

Following his 2023 Juno-nominated album The Big Bottle of Joy, which earned praise from No Depression (“music that spurs elation”) and Glide Magazine (“as uplifting an album as you’ll likely hear this year or any year”), The Hammer & The Rose continues to showcase Andersen’s artistry in new and compelling ways.
With over 33 million Spotify streams, 30 million YouTube views, and a reputation for spellbinding performances across North America, Europe, and Australia, Andersen remains one of the most commanding voices in contemporary blues and roots music.
