Matthew Whitaker Returns with Cinematic New Album Songs for the Weary After releasing Man With the Anvil Hat in 2016, Matthew Whitaker spent the following years touring the UK and Europe with HENGE, delivering four albums of high-energy, rave-infused prog. His new solo album, Songs for the Weary, reveals a very different side: eight serene, beautifully crafted compositions built around delicate classical guitar, rich string arrangements, and subtle electronic textures. The debut single “Lucid Dreamer” (October 2025) introduces the album’s cinematic tone, blending sweeping orchestration with nostalgic melody. Its hypnotic video, directed by Antony Barkworth-Knight and filmed at Manchester’s Supermassive, visually captures the record’s ethereal atmosphere. Co-produced with longtime collaborator Alan Keary (Shunya), the album features guest appearances from Alabaster DePlume, Rob Turner (GoGo Penguin), Liviu George (Matthew Halsall), and Whitaker’s HENGE bandmates. From the orchestral opener “Overture” — evoking the cinematic elegance of Henry Mancini — to the gently defiant closer “Stand Up to the Man,” Songs for the Weary unfolds as a warm, reflective listening experience. The album artwork, painted by Simon Davis, portrays Whitaker as a weary old man — a fitting image for a record designed to comfort and restore.
