Mavis Staples Drops Title Track Ahead of New Album Sad And Beautiful World out 7 November.

More than seventy years into her remarkable career, soul icon Mavis Staples continues to prove why her voice is one of the most cherished in music. Today, Staples unveils the title track from her forthcoming album Sad And Beautiful World, out 7 November. The record brings together new originals, timeless songs, and a stellar line-up of collaborators from across generations.

The single Sad And Beautiful World was written by the late Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse). Staples’ interpretation is a striking piece, built on a solemn rhythm and poetic lyrics that balance sorrow with hope. With her warm and textured delivery, she transforms the song into something deeply intimate, offering resilience through grief and beauty within loss.

Produced by Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, Nathaniel Rateliff), the album showcases Staples’ voice in its purest form. Cook began with minimal arrangements – just drums and piano beneath her vocal – before carefully adding instrumentation. The result is a collection that places Staples’ phrasing and power firmly at the centre.

Cook envisioned the record as a community project, inspired by Will The Circle Be Unbroken. That spirit shines through on Sad And Beautiful World, which features contributions from Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Derek Trucks, Justin Vernon, MJ Lenderman, and Katie Crutchfield, among others. Each guest adds their own artistry, while Staples remains the gravitational centre of the album.

The tracklist spans decades of American music. Alongside new songs are reimagined classics, including Curtis Mayfield’s We Got To Have Peace, Porter Wagoner’s Satisfied Mind, and Jackie DeShannon’s Put A Little Love In Your Heart. Together, they form a collection that is both reflective and urgent – a reminder that Staples’ message of hope and justice is as powerful today as ever.

At 85, Staples’ voice remains undiminished: rich with experience, grounded in community, and brimming with conviction. From her early days with The Staple Singers through solo collaborations with Prince, Wilco, and Hozier, Staples has consistently renewed her legacy. With Sad And Beautiful World, she once again delivers an album that feels both timeless and vital – the next chapter in a living musical history.
